A good college costume has to do three jobs at once: read clearly in a dim, packed room, cost very little, and survive a night of walking between dorms, a house party and maybe a late diner. That rules out most bagged costumes, which tend to be thin, itchy and identical to three other people's. I'd much rather see you build a character from closet basics, one thrift run and a little craft glue. Below are solo looks, duos and roommate groups, from classic movie characters to pure jokes, and for each one I've noted the hair, makeup, props and shoes that actually make it work on a campus night.

Building a Character From Your Closet and One Thrift Run
Almost every look below starts with clothes you already own. Before you buy anything, I'd lay your closet out by colour, because most characters here are really just a colour story plus one signature detail. Velma is orange and red, Daphne is purple and green, Elle is pink. If you own the base colours, you're halfway there.
Then make a short list of the pieces you're missing and take it to a thrift store. Lists stop you buying a whole new outfit when you only needed a red pleated skirt. A few habits I rely on:
- Spend money on the detail that identifies the character, and save on everything else. Wednesday's collar and Velma's glasses matter far more than the dress underneath.
- Check thrifted pieces in daylight near the door. Store lighting hides stains and makes black and navy look identical.
- Wash anything secondhand before you wear it, and test it once with your shoes on, sitting down and raising your arms.
- Fabric glue and safety pins solve most quick fixes. Hot glue is fast, but it lets go on stretchy fabric and in cold air outside.
If you're borrowing from roommates, label everything with a strip of masking tape inside the hem. It saves a lot of arguments in November.
1. Wednesday Addams Costume With Black Dress

Wednesday is one of the easiest characters to get right because the whole costume is a contrast between black and white. A black mini or knee-length dress over a crisp white collared shirt does the heavy lifting; the collar has to sit flat and bright, so I press it and sometimes add a dab of fabric glue under the points. Opaque black tights and chunky loafers, Mary Janes or low ankle boots keep you walkable. Two centre-parted braids are the real signature, and if your hair is short a black braided wig works. Pale, understated makeup with a muted berry lip, a fake hand riding on your shoulder or peeking out of a black bag as Thing, and a deadpan face. Skip every coloured accessory; one bright earring breaks the whole effect.
2. Barbie Cowgirl Costume With Pink Flared Pants

The pink cowgirl is loud on purpose, which is why it scales so well from one person to a whole hallway. Hot-pink flared pants with a matching fitted vest, tank or cropped button-front shirt, plus a white bandana, a sparkly belt and a pink cowboy hat. I tell people to buy the hat first, because cheap pink hats vary wildly in shade and you want the pants to match it, not the other way around. Soft waves or a long blonde wig, rosy cheeks, pink lipstick and a touch of shimmer keep the doll look friendly rather than theatrical. White cowboy boots are ideal, but platform sneakers are kinder after midnight. A small star-shaped purse or a lightweight hobby horse is enough; anything bigger gets knocked around in a crowd.
3. Velma Dinkley Costume With Orange Sweater

Velma is the costume I point budget-conscious students toward first, since almost every piece turns up in a thrift store and the oversized sweater keeps you warm on a cool October night. An orange turtleneck, a red pleated skirt, orange knee socks and red Mary Janes or flat loafers. The bob is where people go wrong: it needs ends that curl under, so if you're using a wig, set the ends around a large roller or with a cool flat iron for a few minutes. Square black glasses are non-negotiable. Add freckles, natural makeup and an old hardcover book, magnifying glass or small notebook. If friends want in, Fred, Daphne, Shaggy and Scooby each come down to a signature colour, a hairstyle and comfortable shoes.
4. Cher Horowitz Costume With Yellow Plaid Set

Cher's yellow plaid set looks coordinated without any makeup tricks or craftwork, but only if the two plaids match. Mixing a thrifted blazer with a skirt from somewhere else is the usual mistake; the checks clash under any light, so I'd buy a matching set or a skirt in a plain yellow that picks up the blazer's main colour. Layer it over a white fitted top or cardigan, then add white knee-high socks with black Mary Janes, loafers or low block heels. A long blonde wig or smoothly blown-out blonde hair, defined lashes, rosy blush and glossy neutral lipstick. A chunky faux phone, fluffy pen or mini backpack sells the school-fashion joke. On a chilly night, skin-tone thermal tights under the socks are invisible and save you.
5. Elle Woods Costume With Pink Blazer Dress

Elle Woods only works if you commit to pink from head to toe. A pink blazer dress, a skirt suit, or a fitted jacket with a matching skirt, then pink heels, pointed flats or platform loafers depending on how far you're walking. The shades of pink should be close; three different pinks start to look like an accident. Long blonde waves, or a blonde wig held with pins hidden under the top layer, soft glam makeup and a glossy pink lip. The props are what make people laugh: a pink notebook, a light law textbook and a small plush dog riding in a coordinating carrier. Pearl earrings and a structured handbag finish it. A friend can come as another fashionable law student, though you'll read fine alone.
6. Audrey Hepburn Breakfast Costume With Black Dress

Holly Golightly's breakfast-scene look is the pick for anyone who wants a costume they can wear again, because the base is simply a good sleeveless black midi or maxi dress with a clean line. Layered faux pearls, long black gloves, oversized sunglasses and small studs do the character work. Sweep the hair into a high bun and add a small sparkly comb or tiara-style piece; I set the bun with a few pins crossed in an X so it doesn't slide down by ten o'clock. Winged liner and a soft pink lip. Wear ballet flats or low pumps rather than stilettos if you'll be standing all night. A plain paper coffee cup and a small pastry bag are the joke, and a structured black clutch holds your phone, keys and campus ID.
7. Daphne Blake Costume With Purple Mini Dress

Daphne reads from across a room on colour alone, so this is a comfortable choice for anyone who wants no construction at all. A long-sleeved purple mini dress, a lime-green neck scarf, a pink headband and lavender tights. Purple flats, low boots or block-heel Mary Janes can handle a full night of walking. Long red hair with softly curled ends, or a red wig that fits snugly; red synthetic wigs are often brassy, so I look for one closer to auburn. Winged liner, peach blush and pink lipstick give the retro feel. A small magnifying glass or a vintage handbag is plenty. She slots straight into a Mystery Inc. group, but purple, green and red together hold up as a solo look too.
8. Sandy Grease Costume With Black Pants

Sandy's finale outfit from *Grease* is my go-to last-minute suggestion because most people already own black pieces close to it. High-waisted black pants or coated leggings, an off-the-shoulder black top and a wide black belt. Coated leggings are the closest match to the shiny original, but they get warm, so a cropped faux-leather jacket you can take off helps. Red slip-on heels give the colour pop; red flats or sneakers are the campus-friendly version. Full, bouncy curls or a curled blonde wig, defined eyeliner, peach blush and a vivid red lip, plus gold hoops and a small black clutch. A friend in black jeans, a fitted black shirt, slicked-back hair and loafers becomes Danny with almost no effort.
9. Regina George Costume With Cutout Tank Top

Regina's cutout tank is a five-minute DIY, and the trick is in the layering. Cut two circles into the chest of an inexpensive white tank, then wear it over a purple or lavender camisole so you stay covered and comfortable. I mark the circles with a glass and cut slightly smaller than you think, since jersey stretches and the holes grow as you wear it. Add a black pleated skirt, a pink cardigan and black boots, Mary Janes or clean sneakers. Straight blonde hair with a centre or side part, or a shoulder-length blonde wig, with glossy pink blush and lipstick. Carry a small notebook labelled as harmless "campus notes" rather than recreating anything insulting. Pink accessories and a confident stance carry the rest.
10. Mia Thermopolis Costume With Tiara And Headphones

Mia Thermopolis is for the student who wants to be in costume but basically dressed for class. A navy school blazer over a white button-down, a plaid skirt, knee socks and black loafers. The joke is the clash: a small silver tiara sitting on long, slightly messy brown hair, or a brown wig with some natural texture left in. Over-ear headphones are the key accessory, and they can sit around your neck when you need to hear someone. I'd anchor the tiara with two small combs or bobby pins slid through the base, since the cheap ones slip the moment you turn your head. Minimal makeup: brushed brows, light mascara, tinted balm. A backpack, notebook or closed umbrella is all the prop you need.
11. Kim Possible Costume With Green Cargo Pants

Kim Possible is built for an active night, since everything in it is meant to move. Olive-green cargo pants and a fitted black long-sleeved top or mock neck. A brown utility belt with empty fabric pouches gives the spy feel without adding weight. Black combat boots with cushioned socks so you can walk and dance. Long red hair in loose layers, or a red wig with side-swept volume; I'd trim a too-blunt wig fringe with thinning scissors so it looks less like a helmet. Natural makeup, lightly defined eyes and peach lipstick. Black gloves and a painted cardboard communicator finish her. A friend in a black top, beige cargos, sneakers and short brown hair becomes Ron, and that pairing gets noticed.
12. Lara Croft Costume With Green Tank Top

A Lara Croft-style adventurer works on campus as long as you leave anything weapon-shaped at home. A fitted green or teal tank, brown cargo shorts with opaque tights if you want them, and sturdy lace-up boots. Add a wide utility belt, fingerless gloves and a small canvas backpack. Swap the holsters for side pouches; they're actually useful, because they hold your phone and keys. A single long braid down the back is the signature, so if you're using a braided wig, pin it at the nape or it'll swing round and twist the cap. Bronzer, brown liner and a neutral lip. A folded paper map, a flashlight or a foam compass is a safe prop that still says adventure.
13. Rosie The Riveter Costume With Denim Shirt

Rosie the Riveter can come straight out of your closet or a quick thrift run. Tuck a medium-wash denim button-down into high-waisted jeans, navy trousers or overalls, and roll the sleeves above the elbows; roll them tight and high, because loose rolls slide down within an hour. The red bandana with white dots goes around an updo, and if your hair is short, a rolled front section or just the bandana tied behind the hairline works. Red lipstick, defined brows and a subtle wing. White canvas sneakers, brown work boots or red flats for comfort. A cardboard sign with an original upbeat message about confidence or teamwork, plus the flexed-arm pose. Friends can each wear a different denim shape and still look like a set.
14. ’80s Workout Costume With Neon Leggings

If moving is the priority, the '80s workout costume is hard to beat, and it grows into a big group easily. A bright leotard or fitted tank over neon leggings, slouchy leg warmers and a cropped sweatshirt. High-top sneakers give the right retro shape and support your feet. A high side ponytail with a scrunchie, or a curly wig in a bright but believable shade. This is the one look where bold makeup is the point: blue or purple shadow, pink blush and glossy lips. Wrist and forehead sweatbands, and a foam dumbbell or rolled-up mat as a prop. Leg warmers bunch and slip on bare skin, so I wear them over the leggings, never directly on the leg. Friends swap neon colours and keep the same formula.
15. Disco Costume With Sequin Jumpsuit

Disco gives you all the shine without needing anyone to know a character. A silver, gold or jewel-toned sequin jumpsuit with a flared leg, or a sparkly long-sleeved top with high-waisted bell-bottoms if a jumpsuit is hard to find. Sequins are scratchy at the underarm seams, so I'd try the jumpsuit on and swing your arms before you commit; a thin long-sleeve tee underneath solves it. Metallic platform boots or low block heels with grippy soles. Feathered layers, a rounded natural shape or a big curly wig. Shimmer on the lids and defined lashes, but keep loose glitter well away from your eyes. Big hoops, a mirrored clutch and a toy microphone or disco-ball purse. In a group, give each friend a different metallic.
16. Cowgirl Costume With Denim And Fringe

A cowgirl is one of the toughest costumes on this list, and it shrugs off changing fall weather because it's mostly denim. Bootcut jeans or a denim skirt, a plaid button-down and a faux-suede fringe vest, with a wide belt and cowboy boots. If the boots are new, wear them around your room for a few evenings before Halloween; new boots blister fast. Two braids, a low ponytail or loose waves under a tan or white cowboy hat, and warm, simple makeup with bronzer, mascara and a rosy tint. A coil of soft rope or a light hobby horse is enough of a prop in a crowd. Tie a patterned bandana at the neck. Roommates can coordinate shirts and hat colours and turn it into a group.
17. Glam Vampire Costume With Red Cape

This vampire leans glamorous rather than gory, which suits a party where you'll be close to people all night. A black velvet dress, a fitted jumpsuit, or a black shirt with tailored trousers, then a deep red cape with a high collar, patterned tights and black ankle boots. High collars flop unless they're interfaced, so on a cheap cape I'd stitch a strip of stiff felt inside the collar. Smooth waves or a long black wig with a sharp centre part. Use a foundation only slightly lighter than your skin, then smoky eyes, sculpted brows and a dark red lip. Wear costume fangs for photos and take them out to eat or drink. A faux-jewelled choker and an empty goblet or a red rose finish it.
18. Modern Witch Costume With Purple Cape

A modern witch can feel festive and a little magical without going dark. A long black ruffled dress, or black wide-leg pants with a fitted mock-neck top, under a purple velvet cape. Striped tights if your hem shows your legs, and buckled black ankle boots that are stable on stairs. Loose waves, a sleek braid or a long purple-tinted wig, with plum shadow, soft highlight and a berry lip. The wide-brim pointed hat is where most of these fail: soft brims droop over your eyes, so I slide a ring of craft wire into the brim edge or pick a hat with a stiffened one. Celestial earrings, a small broom made from light craft materials, and a vintage-looking notebook full of harmless recipes or class notes.
19. Black Cat Costume With Faux Fur Jacket

Black cat is the classic last-minute costume, and it's also the one most likely to look unfinished, so a couple of deliberate details matter. A black fitted jumpsuit, leggings with a bodysuit, or a black mini dress over opaque tights, plus a cropped faux-fur jacket for warmth and texture. Black ankle boots, ballet flats or clean sneakers depending on the night. A high ponytail or sleek bun with a cat-ear headband pushed just behind the hairline, so it sits on your head rather than sliding forward. A small black nose, fine whiskers and softly extended liner in skin-safe makeup. A clip-on fabric tail and a ribbon collar, and maybe a yarn-ball purse or plush mouse. Keep the tail short; long ones get stepped on.
20. Angel And Devil Duo Costume

Angel and devil is the duo I suggest for two friends who dress very differently, because each half can be built from its own wardrobe. The angel wears white: a dress, a jumpsuit, or white trousers with a fitted top, with fabric wings rather than feathers (feathers shed everywhere), a silver halo and white sneakers, plus soft waves, pearly shadow and pink lipstick. The devil goes red: a dress, a red suit, or a red top with black pants, with small red horns, a pointed fabric tail and black boots, sleek hair and a red wing. Swap the pitchfork for a red heart-shaped purse or a cheeky sign. Matching metallic jewellery ties you together, and the white-red contrast carries across a dark room.
21. Bee And Beekeeper Duo Costume

The bee and beekeeper is cheerful and comfortable enough for a long schedule of parties. The bee wears a black-and-yellow striped shirt with black pants or a yellow tulle skirt, sheer wings, antennae and black sneakers, plus yellow shadow, rosy cheeks and a high ponytail. The beekeeper wears beige cargo pants, a white button-down, work boots and a tan utility jacket. The veil is the part I'd test: attach soft white mesh to a wide-brim hat and walk around your room in it, because thick tulle cuts your vision badly at night. Natural makeup and gardening gloves. A clean wooden honey dipper or a flower pot beats carrying real honey. A few felt bees pinned to the beekeeper's jacket link the two looks.
22. Sun And Moon Duo Costume

Sun and moon is the duo for friends who'd rather look polished than funny. The sun wears gold: a dress, a jumpsuit, or a gold top with matching pants, gold flats or platform sneakers, a headband of light gold rays, glowing makeup and warm gold hair accessories. The moon wears silver or navy with silver boots, a crescent headpiece and cool blue eye makeup. Sleek ponytails or soft waves with star clips. I build the ray headband from craft foam glued to a plain headband, since card rays bend the first time someone hugs you. Each of you can carry a metallic star purse or a wand with no sharp points. Keep your silhouettes similar so the contrast is all in the colour.
23. Peanut Butter And Jelly Duo Costume

Peanut butter and jelly is funny without the bulky cardboard boxes that make you miserable after an hour. Peanut butter wears tan trousers, a brown or beige shirt, brown sneakers and a peanut-shaped felt panel on the front. Jelly wears purple pants or a skirt, a berry top, purple sneakers and a grape-jelly label in fabric or poster board. Bread-slice headbands connect you. Felt is the better material here: it bends as you sit, where poster board creases and peels at the corners by midnight. Natural hair or a neat tie-back, and playful makeup in warm brown or berry. Foam bread-slice props for photos. Attach the panels with safety pins or removable fabric tape so nothing marks your own clothes.
24. Tourist And Tour Guide Duo Costume

Tourist and tour guide is a joke costume where both people get to wear normal, practical clothes. The tourist combines a loud printed shirt with khaki shorts, crew socks, comfy sneakers, sunglasses and a floppy sun hat, plus a camera, a folded campus map and a belt bag. The guide wears a polo, tailored shorts or chinos, walking shoes and a name tag with an invented tour-company name, carrying a clipboard and a light pennant on a short cardboard tube. Tidy hair and natural makeup, since the props tell the story. Matching lanyards link the two. I'd make the pennant out of felt rather than paper so it doesn't tear. Skip any real university logo unless you're sure it's allowed.
25. Ghostbusters Group Costume With Coveralls

Ghostbusters suits roommates who want a uniform with room for personal touches. Everyone wears beige utility coveralls, or matching khaki shirts and cargo pants, with black lace-up boots, fingerless gloves and a fabric belt with empty pouches. The packs are the fun build: small painted cardboard boxes, a length of flexible tubing and backpack straps. Keep each pack small; anything deeper than a shoebox clips door frames and other people's drinks. Nothing realistic or weapon-shaped. Natural hair pulled back, a little smudged grey shadow on the cheeks for a hard-day look, and a homemade name patch on each chest. One friend can be the ghost in floaty layered white fabric, white sneakers and a smiling headband.
26. Inside Out Emotions Group Costume

The *Inside Out* emotions give each friend a distinct colour, which is the whole reason this group works. Joy wears a yellow dress with blue hair, bright makeup and yellow flats. Sadness gets a blue sweater and pants, round glasses, a short blue wig and sneakers. Anger is a white shirt, red tie, brown pants, red face makeup and dark shoes. Disgust wears a green dress, purple scarf, green bob wig and matching flats, and Fear has a purple sweater vest, bow tie, checked trousers, tall purple hair and loafers. Coloured face makeup stains collars, so keep it light, set it with powder, and keep the colour off the jawline. Each of you carries a coloured circle with a simple face. Nobody needs to match shapes.
27. Toy Story Group Costume

*Toy Story* gives a roommate group plenty of characters and lets everyone thrift. Woody needs a yellow plaid shirt, jeans, a cow-print vest, a red bandana, a brown hat and boots. Jessie wears a white western shirt, jeans, a red hat, a red braid and boots. Buzz is a white sweatsuit with green and purple felt panels, a purple hood and white sneakers; I'd stitch or fabric-glue the felt rather than iron it on, since iron-on felt lifts off fleecy sweatshirt fabric. Bo Peep wears a pastel blue jumpsuit or dress, a pink bow, blonde curls and low boots, with a foam shepherd's staff. Keep makeup bright. A spare friend in green with a three-eyed headband becomes the alien.
28. Powerpuff Girls Trio Costume

The Powerpuff Girls use one simple silhouette in three colours, so the trio looks planned even if you shop separately. Each of you wears a sleeveless dress or a matching top and skirt with a thick black belt. Blossom is pink with a big red bow, long reddish-orange hair, pink eye makeup, white knee socks and black Mary Janes. Bubbles is blue with blonde pigtails, blue eye makeup, white socks and black shoes. Buttercup is green with a short black bob, green liner, white socks and black flats. The repeated belt, socks and shoes are what tie you together, so agree on those first. Small heart purses in your colours beat character props. On a cold night, matching coloured tights or long-sleeved layers underneath.
29. Mario Kart Group Costume

Mario Kart is ideal for a big group, since every person picks a different racer colour. Each look is a bright shirt, denim overalls or coordinating pants, white gloves, sneakers and a matching cap with a felt letter or simple symbol rather than an official logo. Felt letters peel off a polyester cap if you only use hot glue, so I'd use fabric glue or a few stitches. Natural hair, with mustaches, rosy cheeks or coloured eye makeup to tell racers apart. Wearable karts are light cardboard rings hung from the waist on soft straps, with plenty of room to walk, decorated in each colour with flat paper wheels. Friends can join in green dinosaur clothes or a pink princess dress. Round every cardboard edge.
30. College Mascot Superfan Costume

The over-the-top superfan celebrates campus spirit without the cost or heat of a full mascot suit. A school-colour sweatshirt, athletic shorts or comfortable pants, striped knee socks and supportive sneakers, with a tutu, cape or varsity jacket in the same colours. Small stripes of skin-safe face paint on each cheek and temporary hair spray or ribbons in your palette. Coloured hair spray rubs onto pillowcases and hoodies, so I'd spray only the ends and let it dry fully before you put anything over it. A foam finger, pom-poms, a handmade pennant and a plush that looks like the mascot. If logos are restricted at your event, the colours and plain letters still tell people who you're cheering for.
Wigs, Pockets and Cold Walks Between Parties
College Halloween rarely means one party. You walk from a residence hall to a house, stand in a line outside, then end up somewhere else entirely. A costume that only works in one warm room will fall apart on that route, so I plan for the walk as much as the look.
Keeping a wig on
Braid or pin your own hair flat first, put on a wig cap, and pin the wig through the cap at the crown and above each ear. Bobby pins crossed in an X hold much better than single pins. Cheap synthetic wigs shed and tangle at the nape, so brush them gently before you leave and give them a light mist of water mixed with a little conditioner. Keep them away from candles and heaters, because synthetic fibre frizzes or melts near heat.
Where your phone and keys go
Very few costume pieces have pockets. A small crossbody bag in the character's colour carries your phone, keys and ID without spoiling the look, and Lara Croft's pouches or the Ghostbusters belt are built for it. Whatever you carry, make sure you can hold your drink and your prop at the same time, or leave the prop behind.
Staying warm without hiding everything
Skin-tone thermal leggings and a thin long-sleeved layer disappear under most of these outfits. For the walk itself, pick a coat in a neutral or matching colour you can carry or drape on your shoulders when you arrive. Capes, faux-fur jackets and oversized sweaters, like the vampire, cat and Velma looks, give you warmth built into the character, which is one more reason they're such easy picks for a cold campus.
The Costume That Lasts Until Two in the Morning
None of these needs serious sewing, painful shoes or a big budget. What makes them land is familiar clothing, clear colour and one or two props that tell the story at a glance. Before you head out, walk around in your shoes, pin down wigs and headpieces, and check you can get through a doorway and a crowded kitchen without snagging anything. Add a warm layer, pockets or a small crossbody bag; none of that hurts the character as long as the main colours stay visible. Solo, as a pair or as a whole roommate group, pick the one you'd still be happy wearing at two in the morning.
