The slip skirt started life as underwear, which is exactly why it looks so relaxed now. It's soft, it moves, and it doesn't ask much of the rest of the outfit. Change the shoes or the top and the same skirt goes from a coffee run to dinner. You really only need one or two, ideally a bias-cut midi in a neutral, with everything else rotating around it. The thirty outfits below show that rotation in action, from tees and hoodies to blazers, cable knits and puffer vests.

Getting Thirty Outfits Out of Six Tops
You don't need thirty new pieces to wear these thirty outfits. When I build slip skirt outfits for someone, I start from what's already in their closet and sort it into three piles.
- Tops that tuck cleanly: thin tees, tanks, bodysuits, fine knits, button-downs in cotton poplin or chambray. These carry most of the outfits on this list.
- Tops that sit over the waistband: cropped sweaters, hoodies, sweatshirts, chunky knits. These need a skirt that sits at the natural waist so the hem lands at the right place.
- Third pieces: a denim jacket, a blazer, a trench, a leather jacket, a cardigan. Any one of these changes the outfit's mood completely.
Two tops from each of the first two piles and two jackets already give you dozens of combinations. Add one pair of sneakers, one flat shoe and one boot, and the skirt covers nearly every situation in your week.
On the skirt itself: a bias cut drapes and moves, but it also shows more of what's under it. If you prefer less cling, choose a skirt cut on the straight grain, or one in a heavier, matte satin. Midi is the most useful length, since it works with sneakers, flats and boots alike.
1. Slip Skirt With White Tee and Sneakers

When you want to look dressed but feel like you're still in pajamas, start here. A white crewneck tee tucked into a slip skirt in taupe, champagne or blush, with white leather sneakers. The cotton keeps the satin from looking like evening wear. Tuck the tee only as deep as the waistband, because extra fabric pushed down inside a bias skirt makes lumps at the hip. A neutral crossbody, gold hoops and big sunglasses, and you're out the door for the market or the park.
2. Slip Skirt and Oversized Sweater Outfit

A chunky cream or oatmeal cable sweater over a black or charcoal slip midi is the coziest outfit on the list. Leave most of the sweater loose and tuck just the front edge so the waist still shows. A heavy knit sitting on a light skirt can make the skirt cling to your legs from the friction, so check it as you walk. Black ankle boots with a slight block heel and a structured leather tote. Pumpkin patches and weekend brunch.
3. Slip Skirt With Graphic Tee and White Sneakers

A faded band tee or old logo print with a slip skirt is one of my favorite contrasts: something from a merch table with something that looks like silk. Knot the tee loosely at the waist or tuck the front, and choose a skirt color with some depth, like midnight blue, rust or olive, so it holds its own against the print. White low-profile sneakers, a mini backpack or crescent bag, a few layered chains and tortoiseshell sunglasses. Flea markets, road trips, gallery hopping.
4. Slip Skirt With Denim Jacket and Flat Sandals

Silk and denim have been paired for decades because they balance each other so easily. A medium-wash denim jacket over a tank or tee tucked into a floral slip skirt, flat strappy leather sandals, a woven straw tote. Prints work especially well here, since a solid satin skirt under denim can look a little plain. Roll the jacket sleeves once. I'd wear this to an outdoor brunch or on a vacation morning, and it packs well because neither piece minds being folded.
5. Slip Skirt With Blazer and Ballet Flats

A slightly boxy single-breasted blazer in beige, gray or navy over a fitted ribbed tank or white tee. The blazer's shoulders give the outfit structure and the slip skirt keeps it from feeling corporate. Ballet flats in a matching tone, a top-handle bag and small gold pieces. The blazer should end at the high hip; any longer and it covers most of the skirt's movement. From a casual office to dinner in the same outfit.
6. Slip Skirt With Hoodie and Chunky Sneakers

Yes, a hoodie. Choose an oversized pullover in heather gray, oatmeal or faded black, and a midi slip skirt in a color that contrasts with it. The sporty fabric softens the skirt's sweetness. Chunky platform sneakers, a cap, a slim crossbody and almost no jewelry. Let the hoodie fall just over the waistband rather than tucking it, and push the sleeves up to show the wrist so the volume doesn't swallow you. Airports, coffee runs, Sunday walks.
7. Slip Skirt With Leather Jacket and Combat Boots

Black leather over a dark slip skirt in black, charcoal or wine. Underneath, a plain fitted tee in white or black. Lace-up combat boots give the bottom half weight. The jacket should be short, ending at the waist, so the skirt's line runs uninterrupted from waist to hem. Chunky gold hoops and a few necklaces add shine against all the black. A cool evening out or a concert.
8. Slip Skirt With Cardigan and Loafers

A fitted fine-knit cardigan, buttoned over a camisole or a very thin tee, gives the slip skirt some quiet structure. I like it in a soft pastel or an earthy tone, with the bottom button left open so it sits neatly over the waistband rather than pulling. On your feet, classic leather loafers, penny or horsebit, give it a preppy finish. A structured leather shoulder bag, a few small rings or a slim watch. Museum dates, library afternoons, casual office days.
9. Slip Skirt With Chunky Knit and Knee-High Boots

For proper cold, a thick oversized knit in rust, burgundy or camel with a satin midi and knee-high boots with a flat or low block heel. The boots should reach just under the hem so no skin shows when you walk; I always check that a midi covers the boot top while seated, too. Tuck the sweater front slightly for shape and drape a wool coat over your shoulders on the coldest days. Holiday markets, evenings by the fire.
10. Slip Skirt With Cropped Tank and Strappy Sandals

In the heat, a cropped ribbed tank in white, black or a bright color and a maxi slip skirt in a lightweight satin or charmeuse. The crop should meet the skirt's high waist with only a sliver of skin, which keeps it from looking like a beach cover-up. Charmeuse clings when you sweat, so on very humid days a viscose slip skirt is more comfortable. Flat strappy sandals, a straw bag and layered gold necklaces. Rooftop brunch and beachside dinners.
11. Slip Skirt With Button-Down Shirt and Mules

An oversized white or light blue cotton shirt, half-tucked, sleeves rolled to the elbow. The shirt's crisp texture is the counterpoint to the skirt's drape. Leave the back out and tuck only the front corner; tucking an oversized shirt fully into a slip skirt bunches up into a ring at the waist. Flat or low-heel leather mules, a few gold bracelets and a woven tote or a sleek shoulder bag. Casual Fridays and long lunches.
12. Slip Skirt With Turtleneck and Ankle Boots

A fine-gauge turtleneck tucked fully into a midi slip skirt gives one long, unbroken line. Pick a solid black, cream or camel, and keep the knit thin; a fine gauge tucks without bulk, a chunky one won't. Pointed-toe ankle boots with a low heel lengthen the leg. A structured crossbody and stud earrings, and you have a fall walk, a workday or dinner covered.
13. Slip Skirt With Bomber Jacket and Platform Sneakers

A satin or nylon bomber in olive, black or navy over a white or tonal tank tucked into the skirt. Bomber jackets have a ribbed hem that ends at the waist, which is exactly where you want a jacket to stop over a slip skirt. Platform sneakers add height and comfort, and a mini shoulder bag with sleek sunglasses finishes it. A satin bomber over a satin skirt is a lot of shine, so I'd pick nylon if your skirt is very glossy. City exploring, casual dinners.
14. Slip Skirt With Striped Tee and Espadrilles

A Breton striped tee in navy and white or black and white, tucked loosely into a solid midi slip skirt in coral, sky blue or khaki. Horizontal stripes against a plain skirt keep the outfit lively without any effort. Jute espadrille flats or wedges warm it up, and a straw market tote with woven bracelets finishes it. If the stripe is wide and you're petite, choose a narrower stripe, which takes up less visual space on a short torso.
15. Slip Skirt With Bodysuit and Heeled Sandals

A bodysuit is the smoothest base a slip skirt can have, since nothing bunches at the waist. Scoop or square neck in black, mocha or ivory, meeting the high waist of a satin skirt. The thing I check is the bodysuit's leg line through the skirt; thin satin shows a high-cut leg, so a thong-back or a cheeky cut is better here. Heeled sandals with ankle straps, statement earrings and a clutch. Happy hour into dinner without changing.
16. Slip Skirt With Polo Shirt and Penny Loafers

A slim polo in forest green, navy or cream, tucked neatly into a midi slip skirt, with polished penny loafers and a slim leather belt. The collar gives a tailored note and the skirt keeps it from looking like a sports club uniform. Piqué polos are thicker than you'd expect, so a fine-knit polo tucks better. A structured satchel and a fine chain. Casual meetings, lunch dates, weekend errands.
17. Slip Skirt With Crewneck Sweatshirt and Sneakers

The crewneck sweatshirt is about as relaxed as a slip skirt gets. Choose one slightly oversized in heather gray, navy or a faded pastel, and a midi in a solid color that complements it. Tuck the front hem a little for shape. Clean white or retro sneakers, a canvas tote and a low ponytail. Same note as with heavy knits: fleece rubbing on satin makes static in dry air, so a light spritz of water or anti-static spray on the inside of the skirt keeps it from clinging. Long walks and study sessions.
18. Slip Skirt With Trench Coat and Ballet Flats

A knee-length beige or khaki trench, open over a white tee or silk camisole tucked into the skirt. The trench's shoulders and belt bring structure, and the skirt moves underneath. Look at the lengths before you leave: if the trench and skirt end at the same point, the outfit looks like a coat with nothing under it. Ballet flats in a matching neutral, a leather shoulder bag and a thin scarf tied at the neck. Brunch, shopping, office days in changeable weather.
19. Slip Skirt With Cropped Sweater and Birkenstocks

A lightweight cropped sweater that ends right at the skirt's waist means no tucking at all, which is why this is my lazy-day outfit. Choose a soft neutral and a slip skirt in the same family. Arizona-style Birkenstock sandals in suede or leather give it an earthy base, and a canvas bucket bag with gold hoops finishes it. Suede footbeds darken in rain, so on wet mornings I'd pick the leather version. Weekend mornings and market runs.
20. Slip Skirt With Utility Jacket and Lug Sole Boots

An olive or khaki utility jacket brings pockets, sturdy cotton and an outdoorsy edge to a slip skirt. Layer it over a white tank or tee tucked into the skirt, and add lug-sole Chelsea boots for weight and grip. A canvas backpack or crossbody keeps the practical theme going. Utility jackets are usually cut boxy and hip length, so I belt the skirt or leave the jacket open to keep the waist visible. Exploring a new city, crisp-morning coffee.
21. Slip Skirt With Fitted Tank and Flip-Flops

Two pieces and sandals. A fitted ribbed tank in white, black or a soft neutral, and a slip skirt with an easy drape. With so little going on, the quality of each piece shows, so I'd look for a thicker cotton tank that doesn't twist and a skirt with a clean, even hem. Simple leather flip-flops or thong sandals, a woven shoulder bag, a fine anklet and a sleek bun. Beach trips and hot city days.
22. Slip Skirt With Cable Knit Sweater and Riding Boots

A cream or oatmeal cable-knit crewneck half-tucked into a slip skirt in navy, forest green or burgundy. Darker skirt colors suit a heavy knit better than pale ones, which can look like a nightgown under wool. Tall leather riding boots with a flat heel make one clean line from knee to toe. A leather satchel and a wool scarf. Apple picking, fall festivals and Sunday brunch.
23. Slip Skirt With Chambray Shirt and Flat Sandals

Chambray is softer and lighter than denim, which makes it the better shirt for hot weather. Wear a light blue one open over a white camisole tucked into a neutral slip skirt, or button it and knot it at the waist for more shape. Tan or cognac flat sandals and a canvas tote. A knot sitting right at the skirt's waistband defines the waist; tie it lower and it adds width at the hip. Outdoor lunches, sightseeing, sunny weekends.
24. Slip Skirt With Mock Neck Top and Heeled Mules

A slim ribbed mock neck in black, brown or cream with a maxi slip skirt in the same or a close shade. Wearing one color top to bottom makes a long column, and the high neck draws the eye up to the face. Heeled mules in leather or suede, a sleek clutch or structured mini bag, sculptural earrings. This is the most dressed-up outfit here, right for a dinner date or a gallery opening. A maxi with heeled mules needs a hem that clears the floor in those shoes, so try it on with them.
25. Slip Skirt With Baseball Cap and Platform Sneakers

A baseball cap pushes a slip skirt fully into off-duty mode. Choose a neutral cap in beige, black or navy with little or no branding, a plain tucked tee and a midi slip skirt. Platform sneakers add height. A crossbody and oversized sunglasses. The cap works best when everything else is simple, so I'd keep jewelry to studs. Airports, weekend outings and long walks in town.
26. Slip Skirt With Plaid Blazer and Loafers

A relaxed plaid blazer in gray glen check, brown houndstooth or navy tartan, over a solid black or white fitted top. One pattern is plenty, so the skirt should be plain and in a color picked from the plaid. Black or oxblood loafers, a slim belt at the waist, a structured satchel and small gold jewelry. Wool plaid can catch on a delicate skirt, so I'd skip a bag with metal studs or rough edges at the hip. Casual meetings, bookshops, coffee with friends.
27. Slip Skirt With Linen Shirt and Slide Sandals

A white or natural linen shirt, collar open, sleeves rolled, tucked loosely at the front of a midi or maxi slip skirt in a soft pastel or neutral. Linen breathes in heat, and its slubby texture is a nice contrast to satin. It does crease quickly, but that's part of its character, so I don't fight it. Flat leather slides, a straw hat and a woven beach bag. Seaside lunches, resort afternoons, summer weekends.
28. Slip Skirt With Puffer Vest and Hiking Boots

A quilted puffer vest over a long-sleeve thermal or thin knit turtleneck, with a midi slip skirt. It sounds odd, and it works, because the vest keeps your core warm while the skirt stays light. Choose black, olive or navy, and keep the layers underneath slim so the vest isn't strained. Lace-up hiking boots or rugged lug soles, a knit beanie and a backpack. Winter markets and easy hikes. I'd add fleece-lined tights under the skirt for anything below freezing.
29. Slip Skirt With Racerback Tank and Dad Sneakers

A ribbed cotton racerback in white, black or a bright color, tucked into a high-waisted midi slip skirt. The cut-in armholes show off the shoulders, and the hip-length tank tucks easily. Chunky dad sneakers keep the sporty mood and are comfortable for a long day. A small backpack or belt bag and lip gloss. Racerback cuts need a racerback or strapless bra, so plan for that before you get dressed. Weekend hangouts and outdoor concerts.
30. Slip Skirt With Denim Shirt and Ankle Boots

A chambray or light-wash denim shirt, buttoned and tucked in, with a top button or two undone and the sleeves rolled. Buttoned and tucked is cleaner than the knotted version above and makes this one office-ready. Tan or black leather ankle boots with a low heel. A leather shoulder bag and a simple pendant. It goes from a casual office day to dinner and into the weekend.
Wearing a Slip Skirt Into Winter
A slip skirt is thin, which is why so many people put it away in October. With a few adjustments it stays in rotation until spring.
- Tights cling to satin. A half-slip between the two, or a skirt with a lining, stops the skirt climbing up your legs as you walk.
- Fleece-lined tights in a sheer-effect skin tone give real warmth while looking almost bare. In black, they suit dark skirts best.
- Knee-high boots under a midi cover the gap that ankle boots leave, and they add a layer where you feel cold first.
- The coat should be longer than the skirt or clearly shorter. A coat that ends where the skirt does makes the outfit look cut off, and a long wool coat over a midi keeps the hem from blowing around in wind.
- Keep the knit thin if you tuck it. Save the chunky sweaters for wearing loose over the waistband.
Damp, cold days are hardest on satin, because rain spots the fabric and wet hems drag. On those days I'd choose a darker skirt and boots rather than flat shoes, and save pale satin for drier weather.
Two Skirts, Thirty Outfits, Every Season
Looking back over this list, it's clear the slip skirt hardly changes. The partners do. A hoodie and sneakers make it casual, a blazer and ballet flats make it sharp, a puffer and hiking boots get it through winter. Pair delicate with rugged, keep your colors in the same family, and own a few good tops that tuck cleanly. If you're buying just one, choose a bias-cut midi in a neutral that sits at your natural waist, then try it with whatever you already wear the most and go from there.
