Faux Fur Gets Hot Fast, So Plan the Layers
Most bear costumes lean on faux fur and fleece, and both trap heat. That's welcome on a cold porch and miserable in a crowded living room after an hour. I build bear outfits so the fur can come off without losing the bear: the ears, the nose and the belly patch carry the character, while the fur vest or shrug is the layer you take off.
- Put the fur on a vest or shrug rather than sewing it into the dress, so you can remove it indoors.
- Wear a thin cotton or modal top under fleece. Synthetic on synthetic makes you sweat and builds static.
- Choose short-pile faux fur for a full coat. Long shaggy pile sheds onto everything and matts in the rain.
- For outdoor events, put a thermal layer under the dress instead of adding more fur on top, which keeps the outline slim.
Faux fur also sheds when it's new. Give any fur piece a good shake outdoors and a quick run with a lint roller before the first wear, or you'll find brown fluff on every chair you sit on.
1. Classic Brown Bear Costume

You don't need a mascot suit to read as a bear. A chocolate-brown sweatshirt dress, or a fleece top with matching leggings, plus a cropped faux-fur vest gives the body its texture. Rounded ears go on a headband or get stitched to the sweatshirt hood, and two high buns tucked beneath them add height. For the face, I shade brown eye shadow around the nose, draw a small black tip and add a few whisker dots. Faux-fur wrist cuffs and a short stuffed tail handle the animal details, dark brown lace-up boots or fuzzy shoe covers go on the feet, and a little honey jar in hand tells everyone which bear you are.
2. Cute Teddy Bear Costume

A teddy should look like a toy someone loved for years. Build it on a camel skater dress, sweater dress or romper, and if you want the handmade look, add a cream oval belly panel with removable fabric tape. Rounded plush ears sit over loose curls or two low buns. Keep the makeup sweet: rosy cheeks, warm brown shadow, a black button nose and a short line above the upper lip. The satin bow at the neck is the detail I'd never skip, because it's what separates a teddy from a forest bear at a glance. Brown tights, fuzzy mittens and flat ankle boots, then an oversized fabric heart or a small windup key pinned to your back.
3. Polar Bear Costume

The polar bear is a winter outfit with ears. Wear a white faux-fur jacket over a fleece dress, white leggings or a matching thermal set. A hood with small rounded ears gives the cleanest outline, though a white plush headband works too. Keep hair in a sleek braid, ponytail or updo so the ears stay visible. Pearly white and pale gray shadow around the eyes, a black nose and a few faint whisker dots. White gloves with black felt paw pads tie it together, along with lined white boots and a fluffy tail. All-white costumes look flat in photos, which is why I like a light cardboard snowflake or an icy blue scarf for contrast.
4. Panda Bear Costume

Pandas need almost no explaining, which makes them reliable. Pair a white sweater dress with black leggings, black sleeves and a cropped black faux-fur vest, or go simpler with a white sweatshirt and black joggers. Black rounded ears and two symmetrical space buns go on top. The eye patches are where most people overdo it; I use smoky black shadow and blend the edges outward so they look soft instead of like a painted mask. A black nose and pale pink cheeks, black mittens, comfortable combat boots and a small white tail. Carry a few artificial bamboo stems or pin felt bamboo leaves to a crossbody bag so your hands stay free.
5. Black Bear Costume

An all-black bear can look flat, so texture has to do the work. Wear a black hooded jumpsuit, sweatshirt dress or long-sleeve top and leggings, then add a black faux-fur vest and small ears with warm brown centers. A low ponytail or hair tucked under the hood. Matte black liner draws a rounded nose, and a little charcoal shadow under the cheekbones gives the face some shape. The tan belly patch matters more than it seems: without it, the outfit reads as a black cat. Paw gloves, a short black tail, sturdy black boots, and a cardboard woodland sign or small berry basket that you can set down when you need both hands.
6. Grizzly Bear Costume

A grizzly should look a bit rough, which is why I mix several browns instead of matching them. Start with a shaggy brown faux-fur coat over a dark brown thermal top and straight-leg pants, and let chestnut, taupe and deep brown sit together. Large rounded ears on a fur-trimmed hood and a tousled half-up style. Contour the sides of the nose with brown makeup, add a black tip and brush the brows upward for a wilder face. Faux-fur cuffs, padded paw gloves and a stuffed tail, plus hiking boots if you'll be outside. A light faux log or a plush fish adds the joke without anything sharp.
7. Honey Bear Costume

Golden yellow and caramel keep the honey bear cheerful. Wear a tan sweater dress or brown overalls over a mustard long-sleeve shirt, and add plush ears, a small tail and a cream belly patch. Two curled buns echo the ears. Bronze shadow, gold highlighter, rosy blush and a small brown nose. For the prop, I paint yellow drips around the rim of a light plastic jar and write a simple “honey” label, or tie a wooden spoon to a yellow bucket. Yellow-and-black striped socks hint at bees without turning you into one. Brown lace-up boots and golden ribbon tied around the wrists.
8. Mama Bear Costume

Mama Bear is the costume for the woman who's also herding small trick-or-treaters. Black leggings or relaxed jeans, a brown sweatshirt printed with “Mama Bear,” and a soft faux-fur vest. A plush ear headband over an easy ponytail, braid or loose waves. Minimal makeup: warm neutral shadow, rosy cheeks and a rounded black nose. Pin a small faux-fur tail to the waistband and add paw-print gloves if you like. Supportive brown sneakers or flat boots are non-negotiable for this one, since you'll be walking and supervising all night. One or two small teddies in a front carrier or basket make the idea clear from any side.
9. Baby Bear Storybook Costume

Baby Bear borrows from the three-bears story but stays grown-up enough for an adult. Brown corduroy overalls over a cream puff-sleeve blouse or soft knit top, a fitted brown cardigan, rounded ears and a small furry tail. Braids, low pigtails or curled buns give it a storybook feel. Freckles, pink cheeks and a dark button nose are all the makeup it needs. The bowl and wooden spoon are essential, since without the porridge the costume is just a bear in overalls. Brown knee socks, lace-up ankle boots, and a “Baby Bear” patch on the overalls, cut big enough to read from a few steps away.
10. Smokey Bear Costume

This fan-made forest ranger bear relies on practical clothes. Straight-leg jeans, a fitted brown shirt and a tan utility vest form the base, topped with a wide-brim ranger-style hat with a removable name band. Ears can sit under the brim or attach to the hat itself; I stitch them to the hat band so they move with it instead of sliding on a separate headband. A low braid or ponytail suits the outdoorsy look. Warm brown eye makeup, defined brows, a black nose and a bit of muzzle shading. A brown belt, faux-fur cuffs and a small tail add the bear, sturdy work boots finish it, and a light cardboard forest sign or rolled poster is the safe prop.
11. Cheerful Rainbow Bear Costume

Bright pink makes a cheerful storybook bear. Choose a pink fleece romper, sweatshirt dress, or hoodie and leggings, then attach a white belly circle with a rainbow emblem cut from felt. Felt rainbows look neater if you cut each arc separately and stack them on a backing circle before stitching it down. Pink plush ears with pale centers and a small heart detail on the back. Bouncy curls, pink-tinted buns or a pastel wig. Rosy blush, shimmery pink shadow and a small heart-shaped nose. Rainbow wristbands, a colorful crossbody, white sneakers or pink ankle boots depending on how far you'll walk, and a padded felt cloud wand.
12. Grumpy Blue Bear Costume

Not every bear has to smile. This blue rain-cloud bear gets its humor from a grumpy expression. A blue hoodie dress or fleece jumpsuit takes a white belly panel with a cloud and falling raindrops, plus blue rounded ears, a short tail and plush paw cuffs. A blue bob wig, two buns or hair tucked into the hood. The face is the fun part: cool-toned shadow, a blue nose, and brows drawn at a slight downward angle toward the nose. Carry a small gray umbrella or felt rain-cloud prop, wear white tights and blue sneakers, and add silver raindrop earrings.
13. Yellow Sunshine Bear Costume

The sunshine bear is the happiest one on the list. A yellow romper, hooded dress, or sweatshirt and joggers get a white felt circle on the stomach with a smiling sun, yellow ears with golden centers, a fluffy tail and matching paw mittens. High buns or a short golden-yellow wig. Warm gold shadow, peach blush, a few freckles and a small orange nose. Yellow fabric takes stains from everything, so I keep makeup off the collar with a quick dusting of setting powder. White sneakers for a clean finish, or yellow boot covers for a fuller animal shape. A light sun prop or a sunburst headband behind the ears, kept soft for crowded rooms.
14. Bedtime Bear Costume

The bedtime bear goes for dreamy rather than dark. Start with a navy fleece onesie, velour dress or oversized hoodie with blue leggings, and add a white belly patch with a crescent moon and small yellow star. Rounded blue ears, plush cuffs and a stuffed tail make the bear shape. A loose braid, soft waves or a blue sleep cap between the ears. Silvery shadow, pink blush, tiny star accents and a dark blue nose. A small pillow or rolled blanket is the main prop. Moon-print socks and fuzzy slippers are fine indoors, but slippers are slippery on wet pavement, so switch to navy sneakers for anything outside.
15. Purple Wish Bear Costume

Purple gives the wish bear a break from brown fur. Wear a lavender sweater dress, fleece romper or hoodie and leggings, then add a white belly circle with a shooting star in yellow and turquoise felt. Plush purple ears, a small tail, and two round buns or a lavender wig. Lilac shadow, iridescent highlighter, a purple nose, and a few tiny star stickers at the outer corners of the eyes; check that the stickers are made for skin, since craft stickers can pull at delicate skin when they come off. A padded star wand, white high-tops, purple leg warmers, soft paw gloves, silver clips and a metallic belt bag for your phone and keys.
16. Pink Heart Bear Costume

Hearts on a pink bear can stay playful rather than romantic if the shapes are chunky. Start with a rose-pink dress, fleece jumpsuit or matching set, and add a white stomach panel with two intertwined felt hearts. Pink plush ears with red centers and a small heart-shaped tail. Soft curls, braided buns or a pink ponytail wig. Red-pink shadow, rounded blush, a heart-shaped nose and a few freckles. Carry a fabric heart pillow or paper hearts tied with ribbon. I'd keep the red to the sneakers and the ear centers only, with pink tights and faux-fur cuffs, so the outfit doesn't tip into a valentine. A heart-print mini backpack holds your things.
17. Green Good Luck Bear Costume

Fresh green makes the good-luck bear bright. Pick an emerald or grass-green hoodie dress, jumpsuit, or sweatshirt and leggings, then add a white belly circle with a four-leaf clover in layered felt. Use two greens for the clover, darker leaves over a lighter outline, so it doesn't vanish against the green body. Green ears, paw cuffs and a fluffy tail. High buns or green hair clips around the ears. Soft green shadow, gold highlighter, rosy cheeks and a dark green nose. A padded clover wand or a little pot of gold-painted foam coins, white sneakers, striped green socks and a compact gold belt bag.
18. Rainbow Cloud Bear Costume

The rainbow cloud bear is the hardest of the pastel ones to balance. Wear a white fleece dress or jumpsuit with removable pastel panels in pink, blue, yellow and lavender, a rainbow-and-cloud emblem on the belly, and white ears with multicolored centers. Two buns with pastel extensions or ribbon. Soft rainbow shadow, pearly highlighter, little cloud shapes on the cheeks and a pale pink nose. White paw gloves, a fluffy tail, and pastel leg warmers over white sneakers. Carry a padded rainbow or small cloud bag. Spread the four colors evenly and repeat each one at least twice; one big patch of each looks busy.
19. Glam Teddy Bear Costume

Velvet and faux fur dress a teddy up for an evening party. Choose a fitted brown velvet midi dress or wide-leg jumpsuit and layer a cropped faux-fur shrug over it. The ears should match the chocolate shade exactly, so I usually cover a plain headband in the dress's own color. A smooth high ponytail, soft waves or sculpted buns. Bronze smoky shadow, defined liner, caramel blush and a glossy brown button nose. The satin neck bow keeps the teddy reference, and a small stuffed tail keeps it readable from behind. Opaque tights and block-heel ankle boots you can walk in, plus a structured heart bag or small teddy purse to keep it playful.
20. Ballerina Bear Costume

The ballerina bear is best for an indoor party, where the tulle won't catch the wind. A brown long-sleeve bodysuit sits under a knee-length blush or cream tulle skirt, with a light oval belly panel, plush ears and a small faux-fur tail. A neat ballet bun placed below the ear headband. Delicate pink shadow, rosy cheeks, light whisker dots and a dark brown nose. A narrow satin ribbon at the neck and matching wrist cuffs. Real dance slippers have almost no sole, so I'd go for lace-up ballet-style flats with grip and opaque brown tights. A light star wand or small fabric bouquet is all you carry.
21. Circus Bear Costume

A circus bear gets its drama from tailoring. High-waisted red trousers, a cream blouse and a cropped blue or red ringmaster jacket, then brown ears, faux-fur cuffs and a stuffed tail to bring the animal back in. Curled buns or a big ponytail. Warm brown shadow, round pink cheeks, a button nose and neat whisker dots. A miniature top hat clipped between the ears and a light hoop wrapped in ribbon. Mini hats tip forward over the course of a night, so pin them through the hair on both sides. Striped socks, black lace-up boots, gold trim, decorative buttons and a small bow tie, all light enough to wear for hours.
22. Lumberjack Bear Costume

Flannel makes the lumberjack bear one of the easiest to thrift. A red-and-black plaid shirt over a fitted brown top, dark jeans or corduroy pants, and a shaggy faux-fur vest for texture. Rounded ears and a stuffed tail give the bear outline. A side braid, messy ponytail or two compact buns. Natural brown makeup, softly defined brows, pink cheeks and a black nose. Work boots and thick socks for outdoor events. Carry a light cardboard log or foam camping mug instead of anything that looks like a real tool. A knit beanie can sit behind the ears, and faux-fur fingerless gloves keep you warm while you hold a drink.
23. Hibernating Bear Costume

The hibernating bear is for the woman who wants to wear pajamas to the party. Brown plaid pajamas, a fleece lounge set, or a hooded onesie with a cream belly, plus plush ears, a short tail and fuzzy paw slippers. Loose, slightly messy waves or two relaxed buns. Warm shadow, flushed cheeks, a button nose and a few painted freckles. The sign carries the joke: a small pillow labeled “Do Not Disturb” or a cardboard “Hibernating” sign. Rest a sleep mask above the ears for photos. Outdoors, swap the slippers for lined brown sneakers and throw on a long teddy coat.
24. Picnic Teddy Bear Costume

Gingham and a basket give this teddy a daytime, storybook feel. Tuck a brown knit top into a red gingham midi skirt, or wear a gingham pinafore over a brown turtleneck. Rounded ears, a furry tail and soft paw cuffs, with braids or loose curls tied in red ribbon. Peach blush, freckles, brown shadow and a small black nose. Pack the picnic basket with a folded checked cloth and toy food, and keep it light, because a basket on one arm gets heavy faster than you'd think. Cream knee socks and brown Mary Janes or flat ankle boots. A tiny straw hat between the ears, set back far enough that the ears still show from the front.
25. Gummy Bear Costume

A gummy bear is one bright color from head to toe, and the shine is what makes it candy. Pick red, orange, green or blue, then wear a vinyl-look dress, raincoat or shiny tracksuit in that shade. For the ears, layer colored mesh over felt so light passes through like a gummy. Two smooth buns or a wig matched exactly to the clothes. Vinyl doesn't breathe, so this one runs hot indoors; a thin cotton layer underneath helps. Glossy lids, bright blush and a rounded nose a shade deeper. Matching gloves and opaque tights hold the single color, finished with platform sneakers or ankle boots. Carry a candy-bag prop of clear cellophane and cardboard that stays open and easy to put down.
26. Stuffed Bear Gift Box Costume

A bear stepping out of a present is a visual joke people get in a second. The bear base is a brown sweater, matching leggings, plush ears, paw gloves, comfortable boots, a cream stomach panel and two curly buns. Rosy cheeks, a button nose and short whisker dots for a toy-like face. Build the box from foam board with no bottom, and hang it from wide suspenders so it sits at your waist. Keep the box's top edge below your elbows; any higher and you can't sit or reach a drink. Wrap it in colorful paper with a large fabric bow, then add a ribbon at your neck and a removable gift tag on one wrist.
27. Bear Barista Costume

The barista bear costs almost nothing, since most of it is ordinary clothing. A brown long-sleeve shirt, black jeans and a tan apron with a simple paw-print patch. Plush ears, a small tail and faux-fur wrist cuffs, with hair in a practical bun or ponytail. Neutral shadow, pink blush, whisker dots and a rounded brown nose. Write a bear-themed name on the apron with fabric marker, and practice it on scrap first, since marker bleeds on loose weaves. Carry an empty reusable cup or a light tray with foam pastries glued on. Black nonslip-style sneakers keep it realistic, and a brown cardigan or teddy jacket adds warmth in the same café colors.
28. Astronaut Bear Costume

Silver details take the bear out of the forest and into space. Start with a white utility jumpsuit, or cargo pants and a fitted jacket, then add silver piping, star patches and a paw-shaped mission badge. White or pale gray ears go on a light helmet-style headband, plus a matching stuffed tail. A low braid or tucked-up hair. Shimmery silver shadow, soft pink blush, tiny star freckles and a charcoal bear nose. White high-tops or moon-boot-style shoes. A cardboard control panel or small planet prop works, but the metallic backpack is my favorite piece here: it reads as life support and holds your phone.
29. Ice Skating Polar Bear Costume

The skating polar bear is the most graceful shape on the list. A white mock-neck bodysuit sits under a pale blue skating-style dress with a flared skirt at the knee or longer, plus white fleece tights, plush ears, paw cuffs and a fluffy tail. A polished bun with snowflake clips. Icy blue shadow, pearly highlighter, pink cheeks and a small black nose. Real skates are out away from the rink, so I make silver blade shapes from light foam and attach them to white lace-up boots with elastic loops that come off before you walk on stairs. A glittery snowflake wand or faux-fur muff, and a cropped white jacket for warmth that still shows the skirt.
30. Witch Bear Costume

The witch bear mixes classic Halloween clothes with soft animal details, so it stays cute. Wear a black or deep purple midi dress with a brown faux-fur vest and striped tights. The ears go on a wide-brim pointed hat, and placement is the tricky part: stitch them just in front of the cone, on the brim, or the hat hides them completely. Loose waves, a side braid or two low buns. Plum shadow, rosy blush, star-shaped freckles and a black button nose. Faux-fur cuffs, a stuffed tail and buckled ankle boots, plus a small broom wrapped in purple ribbon or a plush moon bag. A cape lined in warm brown links the witch to the bear.
A Bear Nose in Ten Minutes With Makeup You Own
Almost every bear here uses the same face: a small dark nose, a little muzzle shading and a few whisker dots. You don't need face paint for it. A dark brown or black eyeliner pencil and a matte brown eye shadow will do the whole thing, and they come off with your usual remover.
- Fill a small rounded triangle on the tip of the nose with the pencil. Keep it smaller than you think; a large nose spreads when you smile.
- Draw a short line from the nose down to the center of the upper lip.
- Buff matte brown shadow around the sides of the nose and over the upper lip to suggest a muzzle.
- Dot three whisker points on each cheek with the pencil tip.
- Press translucent powder over everything so it doesn't smudge onto a fur collar.
If you've never worn liner on the nose, try it on the inside of the wrist the day before. It's skin you don't usually put pencil on, and some people find it itches.
One Brown Base, Several Bears
A brown sweater dress, brown leggings, a fur vest and a pair of rounded ears cover about a third of this list. With that base in your wardrobe, the character comes from what you add: a bowl and spoon for Baby Bear, a printed sweatshirt for Mama Bear, a plaid shirt and log for the lumberjack, an apron for the barista. If you plan to dress up with friends or wear a bear costume two years running, buy the base pieces in the same brown so they mix and match.
Which Bear Suits Your Night?
One animal covers a surprising amount of ground here. You can stay cozy in a fleece onesie, dress a teddy up in velvet and tulle, or go for a joke with the astronaut, barista, ballerina or witch. Whichever one you pick, carry the idea from head to toe: rounded ears, makeup that matches, shoes for the evening ahead and one light prop. That's what makes a closet-based outfit look finished. Adjust the layers, hem length and shoes to the party you're actually going to, and pick the bear personality that suits your mood.
