Packing for a trip should be fun, and for most of the plus-size women I dress, the fun disappears the moment clothes start clinging, riding up or rubbing in the heat. Most of that comes down to three things: fabric that breathes, cuts that define the waist without squeezing it, and colors that suit where you're going. These 25 head-to-toe outfits cover beach days, city walking, cruise dinners and travel days, and for each one I've noted the fit detail I'd check first. Use these plus size vacation outfits as a starting point and pack the ones that fit how you like to travel.

Heat, Thigh Chafing and Long Walking Days
Vacations usually mean more walking than everyday life, often in heat and humidity, and that's when thigh chafing turns a dress day into a painful one. I'd plan for it rather than hope it doesn't happen.
- Anti-chafe shorts or slip shorts under dresses and skirts. Thin, smooth styles with a flat leg band stay put better than cotton bike shorts, which ride up.
- An anti-chafe balm or stick in your day bag, reapplied after swimming.
- Fabric choice: linen, cotton and rayon breathe; polyester and thick jersey hold sweat against the skin.
- Underwear that fits now, not two years ago, since tight elastic rubs more in heat.
Feet matter just as much. New sandals rub at the toe post and heel strap, so wear them around the house for a week before the trip. Swelling in hot weather is common, and adjustable straps or slides cope with it better than fixed sandals.
I also tell clients to pack one more bottom layer than they think they need. Slip shorts get sweaty and need a rinse at night, and having a dry pair the next morning makes the difference between wearing the dress you planned and changing into trousers.
1. Tropical Print Maxi Dress with Slide Sandals

If I could only pack one dress for a tropical trip, it would be a flowy print maxi. A long, loose line lets air move around the legs, which matters in humidity, and an empire waist defines the bust without gripping the stomach. Rayon or a cotton blend feels cooler than polyester. Check the bust seam: it should sit under the bust, not across it, or the whole dress pulls forward. Flat slides, a wide straw hat and a woven bag take it from brunch to a market walk. Bold florals photograph well against sand and water.
2. Plus Size Swimsuit with Sheer Kimono Cover-Up

A swimsuit under a sheer kimono is the easiest way to move from the pool to a cafe without changing. Ruching or color-blocking on a one-piece breaks up the surface and looks intentional; a high-waisted bikini is the option if you prefer two pieces. Chiffon kimonos float nicely but can stick to damp skin, so I'd choose a slightly crinkled fabric that stands away from the body. Long enough to reach mid-thigh gives real coverage. Sunglasses, a sun hat, slides and a big woven tote finish it.
3. Wide-Leg Linen Pants and Fitted Tank Top

Wide-leg linen trousers with a fitted tank are what I'd wear for a day of city sightseeing in heat. The high waist and full leg let air in, and the leg falls straight from the hip so nothing clings at the thigh. Linen does crease, so I'd treat the wrinkles as part of the look rather than packing an iron. A snug ribbed tank in coral, ivory or olive balances the volume of the trousers; tuck it to mark the waist. White sneakers and a crossbody keep you moving through galleries and outdoor lunches.
4. Wrap Jumpsuit with Heeled Sandals

A wrap jumpsuit gives one long line from shoulder to floor and ties exactly where your waist is, which is why I suggest it so often to curvier clients. Navy, emerald or terracotta look rich and pack small. The V-neck is flattering, but wrap tops can gape at the bust when you lean forward, so a small snap or safety pin inside is worth it. Heeled sandals or wedges, chandelier earrings and a clutch suit an evening of dancing at a beach club or walking the resort after dark. Swap to flats and a denim jacket for the day.
5. Polka Dot Midi Dress with Strappy Flats

Polka dots are cheerful and forgiving, and a midi dress is the most wearable way to use them. A fit-and-flare or A-line skirt marks the waist and falls clear of the hips, so it suits most figures. I'd pick a medium-sized dot: tiny dots blur from a distance, while very large ones can sit oddly on the bust. Cotton or crepe keeps it breathable. Strappy flat sandals, a structured crossbody and fine gold jewelry work for a market morning, and a cropped denim jacket covers a cooler evening.
6. High-Waisted Denim Shorts and Cropped Blouse

High-waisted denim shorts with a cropped blouse is a fun summer outfit if the shorts fit properly. Look for some stretch, a rise that reaches your natural waist and a leg opening that doesn't cut into the thigh; that last point is the one most shorts get wrong. Shorts also ride up as you walk, so a slightly longer inseam saves constant tugging. A soft blouse in gingham, small florals or eyelet should end right at the waistband. Add a woven belt, espadrilles or flat sandals, a straw hat and a mini backpack.
7. Sundress with Cropped Denim Jacket

A sundress with a cropped denim jacket handles unpredictable weather, cold restaurants and windy ferry rides. Choose a pastel or floral sundress in cotton or rayon that moves with you. The jacket should end at the high waist so it doesn't cut the dress at a wider point. Denim with a little stretch lets you lift your arms without the back pulling tight. Flat sandals or white sneakers, a crossbody and small hoops finish it for a day of sightseeing and an outdoor dinner.
8. Off-Shoulder Sundress with Straw Hat

Off-shoulder necklines show off the shoulders and collarbone, which is a flattering spot to draw attention to on most bodies. The elastic needs to be firm enough to stay put when you lift your arms but not so tight that it leaves a red line; that's the first thing I check on a client. A strapless bra with a silicone band holds better than a convertible one under this neckline. Coral or a bold tropical print in cotton poplin or a linen blend suits a beach trip. Flat strappy sandals, a wide straw hat and tortoiseshell sunglasses complete it for seaside lunches and garden tours.
9. Linen Button-Down Shirt with High-Waisted Shorts

A linen button-down tucked into high-waisted shorts looks put together with very little effort. White, chambray or a pastel stripe stays fresh, and linen keeps you cooler than cotton in strong sun. The shorts need a relaxed leg opening that skims the thigh; a tight hem pushes the leg outward and looks shorter. Roll the sleeves and leave the top buttons open. If the shirt gapes between buttons at the bust, size up and tie the extra length at the waist instead. Leather sandals or espadrilles and a straw tote suit a marina lunch or city day.
10. V-Neck T-Shirt Dress with White Sneakers

A V-neck T-shirt dress is the closest thing to wearing pajamas in public. Soft cotton jersey moves with you, and the V draws the eye up and lengthens the torso. Thin jersey can cling over the stomach and show lines, so I'd choose a heavier weight that skims. Charcoal, olive or coral all work. A belt or built-in drawstring adds shape, and white sneakers make it right for travel days and walking tours. Tie a light utility jacket at the waist and add a backpack and simple jewelry.
11. Tiered Midi Dress with Slide Sandals

Tiered dresses get a bad reputation for adding volume, but a midi with narrow tiers that start below the bust actually flows away from the body and keeps you cool. I steer clients away from tiers that begin high on the chest, which can make a full bust look like it carries the whole dress. Ditsy florals, watercolor prints or a sunny solid are all easy. Metallic or neutral slides, a layered necklace and a crossbody suit farmers markets, winery tours and casual resort dinners.
12. Cropped Wide-Leg Pants with Sleeveless Blouse

Cropped wide-leg pants give more coverage than shorts and still let the breeze in. The crop should end at the narrowest part of the lower leg, just above the ankle bone; ending mid-calf cuts the leg at its widest point. Crepe or a linen blend holds its shape. A sleeveless blouse with a tie neck, ruffle or soft pleats, tucked to define the waist, adds personality. Strappy sandals or wedges, a structured handbag and statement earrings polish it for resort dining or an evening harbor walk.
13. Boho Maxi Skirt with Off-Shoulder Top

A boho maxi skirt with an off-shoulder top is the outfit for sunset beach walks and coastal towns. An elastic waistband in crinkle fabric or soft rayon stays comfortable all day; I'd look for a wide, flat elastic band, which doesn't roll or dig in like a narrow one. Paisley or another bold print below needs a solid neutral above, like cream or black. Tuck loosely or add a braided belt, then flat leather sandals, beaded bracelets and a fringe crossbody.
14. Flowy Palazzo Pants with Tank Top

Palazzo pants are dramatic and comfortable at once, and they're one of my favorite evening pieces for plus-size clients. Full-length wide legs in a silky or jersey fabric make a long line from waist to floor. Fuchsia or a tropical leaf print feels like a holiday. Balance the volume with a fitted tank or bodysuit, and make sure the hem just clears your shoes, since too-long palazzos catch under a heel. Heeled sandals or wedges, oversized hoops and a clutch suit a resort dinner or a night of dancing.
15. Matching Two-Piece Set with Slides

A matching two-piece set saves time every morning of a trip. For plus-size travelers, a relaxed short-sleeve button-up with drawstring shorts or wide-leg pants is easy to wear. Crinkled cotton, linen or soft rayon in palm leaves, stripes or tie-dye breathe well, and crinkle textures hide packing creases. A set that uses a drawstring rather than a fixed elastic waist adjusts after a big meal. Wear it together or split it up for more outfits, with flat slides, a tote and layered gold necklaces.
16. Chambray Shirt Dress with Woven Belt

A chambray shirt dress is one of the hardest-working pieces in a vacation bag. The soft denim-look cotton breathes in warm weather, and the button front lets you wear it open as a duster over a swimsuit or closed as a dress. A woven or leather belt shapes the waist. If buttons pull across the bust, choose the size that fits there and let the belt take in the waist. Rolled sleeves, flat sandals or white sneakers, a canvas tote and studs take it from coffee to lunch to the beach.
17. Velvet Wrap Dress with Ankle Boots

Velvet sounds wrong for a vacation, but for cooler evenings, mountain trips or a dressy cruise night, a velvet wrap dress is a lovely piece. Stretch velvet is the one to pack: it doesn't crush the way silk velvet does and moves with the body. The wrap shape defines the waist and forms a V at the neck. Emerald, sapphire or burgundy look rich in evening light. Low block-heel ankle boots or strappy heels, a metallic clutch and chandelier earrings suit upscale resort dinners and theater nights.
18. Ruffled One-Piece Swimsuit with Sarong

A ruffled one-piece swimsuit is playful and supportive at once. Look for soft cups, adjustable straps and power-mesh lining at the front, which gives a smoother line than a single layer of fabric. Ruffles at the neckline or shoulders draw the eye up and add a little volume on top, which balances fuller hips. Tangerine or navy with white trim both look fresh. A light sarong tied at the hip covers the walk to the water. Slides, a wide hat and big sunglasses finish it for swimming or the pool bar.
19. Printed Co-Ord Set with Flat Sandals

A printed co-ord gives you three outfits in one. A relaxed button-up shirt with matching wide-leg trousers in crinkled or breathable fabric works together, or wear the shirt open over a swimsuit, or the trousers with a white tank. Soft stripes, watercolor florals or geometric prints all feel current. I'd keep the print medium-scale; tiny prints can look busy across a full set. Flat strappy sandals, a woven bag and hoops suit beach-to-bar days, casual dinners and travel.
20. Utility Romper with Espadrilles

Rompers are tricky for taller or long-torsoed women, and that's the first thing I check: if the torso is too short, it pulls up uncomfortably every time you sit. A cotton or linen-blend utility romper with a belted waist, roll-tab sleeves and a button front should let you raise your arms and bend without the crotch tightening. Khaki, olive or chambray blue suit sightseeing and nature days. Espadrille wedges or flat sandals, a leather crossbody, aviators and a watch finish it.
21. A-Line Midi Skirt with Fitted Knit Top

An A-line midi skirt with a fitted knit top is a classic shape that flatters most plus-size figures, because the skirt fits at the waist and then falls clear of the hips. Cotton sateen or linen in a painterly floral or subtle stripe feels light. A short-sleeve or sleeveless knit in a color pulled from the print keeps it calm. I'd make sure the skirt has pockets and an inch of ease at the waist, since you'll be eating well on holiday. Strappy flat sandals, a statement necklace and a top-handle bag suit a vineyard lunch or an evening concert.
22. Flowy Maxi Dress with Wedge Sandals

Wedges turn a flowy maxi dress into an evening outfit without the wobble of stilettos on uneven terraces or grass. Pick a solid jewel tone like amethyst or teal, or a soft watercolor print, in rayon challis or crepe that moves. An empire waist or wrap bodice gives support and shape. A cork or espadrille wedge is far steadier on a garden lawn than a thin heel. A beaded clutch and statement earrings suit sunset dinners, cocktail hours and even a beachfront wedding reception.
23. Knit Lounge Set with Sneakers for Travel Days

Travel days call for comfort, and a matching knit lounge set looks deliberate rather than sloppy. Soft French terry or a ribbed knit top with joggers or wide-leg pants in oatmeal, charcoal or dusty rose works well. On long flights, feet and ankles swell, so I'd pick joggers with a relaxed cuff or wide legs over a tight ankle band. Add a light quilted jacket or a big scarf that doubles as a blanket, white sneakers and a tote that holds everything you need on board.
24. Kaftan Cover-Up with Statement Jewelry

A kaftan cover-up is the most glamorous thing you can throw on by the pool. A light, semi-sheer kaftan with embroidery, tassels or a bold print gives full comfort and coverage. Look for side slits that start at the knee or lower, so it doesn't flap open when you walk. Wear it over a black one-piece or a bikini, then add chunky gold bracelets, oversized hoops and metallic flat sandals. A red lip takes it from the pool to the seaside bar on a resort or cruise.
25. High-Waisted Maxi Skirt with Crop Top

A high-waisted maxi skirt with a structured crop top shows a small strip of skin while keeping most of the body covered. A solid black, white or terracotta skirt in stretch knit or soft woven fabric makes a long line. The crop should meet or just overlap the waistband, which is where I'd place it on most clients; a large gap of skin isn't comfortable for everyone. Wide straps hold a bra in place, and a square or sweetheart neckline is flattering. Flat sandals, a denim jacket tied at the waist and layered necklaces suit concerts and beach walks.
Ordering Swimwear Online in Time for the Trip
Most plus-size swimwear is bought online now, and sizes vary a lot between brands. Give yourself time: order at least a few weeks before you travel, so you can return and reorder.
What I check when a suit arrives
- Torso length. Sit down in it. If the straps dig into your shoulders, the torso is too short, and many brands make long-torso versions.
- Bust support. Lift your arms and bend forward; if you spill out, look for a suit sized by bra size or one with underwire.
- Leg line. A higher leg cut actually makes the leg look longer; a low, straight one can cut in at the widest point.
- Lining. A fully lined front stays opaque when wet, especially in pale colors.
Try it on in good light, wet if you can. A suit that fits in the bedroom can sag after a swim, and chlorine-resistant fabric keeps its stretch far longer if you'll be in a pool most days.
Pack for How You Want to Feel on the Trip
There's no size limit on good vacation clothes. The outfits that work best on a trip share the same basics: fabric that breathes, a waist that's defined without pinching, and accessories that finish the look. Pick pieces that do more than one job, like a maxi dress that goes from beach to dinner, a co-ord you can split, and a layer for cool evenings. Then check the fit details: where the seam sits, how the shorts ride, whether the hem clears your shoes. Pack what you like seeing in the mirror, and you'll forget about your clothes once you're there.
