A festive top is one of the easiest ways to look dressed for the holiday without wearing a costume. The shirts here run from graphic tees and sweatshirts to personalized designs and a silky button-up for a dressier table, with plaid turkeys, gratitude slogans, retro prints and embroidered details in between. With a novelty shirt, my job as a stylist is to make everything around it look deliberate, so each one below comes with the bottoms, shoes, layer and accessories I'd actually put with it. There are relaxed looks for cooking at home, photo-ready ones for family dinner and a few polished outfits for a more formal celebration. Treat them as starting points and adjust colors and footwear to your own plans.

Sizing a Unisex Graphic Tee for a Woman's Frame
Many holiday shirts are sold in unisex sizing, which generally follows men's measurements: longer in the body, wider at the shoulder and straighter through the waist. That's why a unisex medium often looks a size bigger on a woman than a women's medium would. Before ordering, I compare the size chart with a tee you already like, laid flat and measured armpit to armpit.
Fitted, relaxed or oversized
- For a fitted tee you'll tuck into skirts or trousers, many women go one size down from their usual size in unisex.
- For a relaxed, half-tucked look with jeans, your usual size usually works.
- For an oversized sweatshirt over leggings, go one or two sizes up, but check the body length, because too much length bunches at the hip instead of draping.
- Shoulder seams tell the truth. A seam that falls a little past the shoulder looks relaxed, while one near the elbow looks borrowed.
All-cotton tees can also shrink a little in a hot wash or a high-heat dryer. If the fit is borderline and the label says 100 percent cotton, I'd take the slightly bigger size and wash it cool.
1. Thankful Thanksgiving Shirt With Straight-Leg Jeans

A “Thankful” tee is the simplest way to look festive without a busy print. I prefer cream, faded rust or muted olive with clear lettering, since a softer shirt color keeps the slogan from shouting. Straight medium-wash jeans give a classic base, and a long oatmeal cardigan softens the graphic and adds warmth. Half-tuck a relaxed or unisex tee at the front so the waist shows; if it's oversized, a single roll at the sleeve stops it swamping your arms. Tan ankle boots, small gold hoops and a structured crossbody finish it for a casual family meal or an afternoon visit.
2. Turkey Thanksgiving Shirt With Corduroy Pants

A turkey graphic brings humor, and corduroy keeps it grown-up. Choose the shirt in ivory or brown, then skip denim for high-rise cords in camel or burgundy; the ridged texture makes the outfit look deliberately autumnal. With wide-leg or straight cords, a slightly fitted tee tucked in keeps the line neat, because a loose tee over wide pants adds width at the top and bottom at once. White leather sneakers or brown loafers decide how polished it reads. A light denim jacket worn open adds a layer without hiding the turkey. It holds up through cooking, serving and the dishes afterward.
3. Oversized Thanksgiving Shirt With Black Leggings

When comfort comes first, an oversized sweatshirt and black leggings are hard to beat. Look for a roomy crewneck with small pumpkins or quiet gratitude lettering. The fit check is simple: it should cover your hips and seat, with shoulders that drop slightly but don't hang toward the elbow. Thick, opaque leggings matter, since thin ones turn see-through when you bend over the oven. White sneakers and ribbed crew socks keep it casual, and a quilted vest in cream or olive helps on a walk after dinner. Small hoops and a compact belt bag are plenty. I'd point hosts and travelers toward this one first.
4. Thanksgiving Sweatshirt With Satin Midi Skirt

A sweatshirt over a satin midi skirt is my favorite way to make a casual graphic look dressed for dinner. Start with a slightly cropped crewneck in cream or burgundy, or tuck a standard one in at the front only. A chocolate or bronze satin skirt sets up the contrast between fleece and liquid fabric. Thick fleece tucked all the way into satin creates a bulge at the waist, which is why the cropped length or a front tuck is the version I'd choose. Pointed ankle boots add structure for cool weather. A small shoulder bag and drop earrings finish it, and pushing the sleeves up shows off a bracelet or watch.
5. Plaid Turkey Thanksgiving Shirt With Dark Jeans

A plaid patchwork turkey already holds most of the fall palette, usually rust, mustard, brown and forest green, so the rest of the outfit should step back. Dark straight jeans give a clean base, and brown loafers or low-heeled ankle boots keep it practical. If you need an outer layer, a lightweight utility jacket worn open keeps the graphic visible. I avoid any second print here, a patterned scarf included, because plaid against plaid at close range turns messy quickly. A tan handbag and small gold earrings finish it for a casual dinner or daytime gathering.
6. Grateful Thanksgiving Shirt With Wide-Leg Pants

Wide-leg trousers do more to dress up a slogan tee than any accessory could. Choose a soft fitted tee or long-sleeve top in ivory or muted sage, and tuck it fully into high-rise trousers in chocolate or navy. The tuck isn't optional here; a loose tee over wide pants looks like two separate outfits. A narrow belt sharpens the waist. Pointed flats or low block heels suit a dinner, and mules suit a lunch. A structured handbag and delicate layered necklaces finish it. If you prefer pants but want to look dressier than jeans, this is the one I'd reach for.
7. Funny Thanksgiving Shirt With Jogger Pants

A funny shirt belongs in a relaxed outfit built for cooking, the game and the couch afterward. Choose a tee or sweatshirt with a food or turkey joke that sounds like you, and pair it with tailored joggers in black or heather gray rather than pajama bottoms. The difference is in the cut. Tailored joggers have a flat front, a tapered leg and a clean cuff, which makes the outfit look put together. Supportive slip-on sneakers and a denim jacket for some structure finish it. Keep the colors limited so the joke reads first, and a sleek ponytail with small studs is enough for an informal day.
8. Pumpkin Thanksgiving Shirt With Brown Jeans

Pumpkins feel seasonal without leaning on the turkey. Choose a shirt with three small pumpkins or a simple outline on an ivory or muted mauve background. Brown straight-leg jeans make a tonal palette that looks richer than blue denim, and taupe suede ankle boots follow the same thread. Add a cropped cream cardigan that ends at the waistband. A longer one hides the front tuck, and the tuck is what gives the outfit its shape. A rust shoulder bag adds a small pop of color and gold studs finish it. Outdoors against fall leaves, the soft colors photograph especially well.
9. Western Thanksgiving Shirt With Bootcut Jeans

Western Thanksgiving shirts often pack cowboy boots, sunflowers, pumpkins and a gratitude message into one graphic, so let those details guide the outfit. Dark bootcut jeans should fall over pointed cowboy boots, with the hem just touching the top of the foot and the flare sitting neatly over the shaft. A fitted denim jacket or suede-look vest adds one more Western note. Stop at two, though. Add a hat and fringe as well and it starts to look like a costume. A leather belt with a simple buckle and a cognac crossbody tie the warm colors together, and a front tuck balances a relaxed shirt against the flare.
10. Retro Thanksgiving Shirt With Pleated Pants

A retro shirt brings personality through faded lettering and vintage colors. Garment-dyed tees in moss, washed burgundy or mustard get that soft, lived-in color because they're dyed after sewing, and they tend to soften further with each wash. Pair one with high-rise pleated pants in dark brown or camel, which keeps the nostalgic graphic looking current. White sneakers keep it casual and loafers make it smarter. Add a cropped denim jacket or fitted cardigan if it's cool. I'd skip extra vintage accessories, since one retro piece reads as style and several read as theme.
11. Minimal Thanksgiving Shirt With Black Jeans

Not every Thanksgiving shirt needs a large turkey or a colorful slogan. A minimal design with tiny embroidered leaves or discreet lettering gives a quieter holiday look you'll keep wearing well past November. Pick a shirt in cream, taupe or deep green and wear it with high-rise black jeans. An oversized camel blazer adds structure, and black loafers or pointed flats finish the lower half. A polished leather belt and compact handbag take the casual shirt up a level. Gold hoops and a thin chain are all the jewelry it needs. The clean lines suit indoor family portraits, where a large graphic can take over the frame.
12. Embroidered Thanksgiving Shirt With Midi Skirt

Embroidery gives texture that a flat printed graphic can't. Look for small pumpkins, wheat or leaves stitched onto a cream or olive top, and pair it with an A-line midi in corduroy or twill. A rust or camel skirt reinforces the palette and moves when you walk. Knee-high boots under the hem keep you warm. If you add a cropped cardigan, it should stop above the embroidery or stay open, since covering the stitching hides the shirt's best feature. Check the inside of the embroidery before buying, because scratchy backing threads can irritate skin over a long day. A top-handle bag and small earrings finish it.
13. Personalized Thanksgiving Shirt With Mom Jeans

A personalized shirt, with a family name or a Head Chef title, makes the day feel a bit more memorable. Keep the outfit casual with high-rise mom jeans in a medium or light wash, whose relaxed cut gives room through the hips and waist. Add white sneakers and a plaid overshirt worn open so the design stays visible. A simple watch and small hoops finish it. If the whole family is ordering, I'd pick shirt colors that sit within one palette rather than putting everyone in the same shade. That looks connected in photos while each person still wears a cut that flatters them.
14. Friendsgiving Shirt With Faux Leather Pants

A Friendsgiving tee gets a sharper edge with faux leather pants. Choose a group shirt with clean lettering in cream or charcoal, and pair it with straight or slightly tapered faux leather pants in black or deep brown. The slick finish against soft cotton gives the outfit its contrast and keeps it playful. Faux leather doesn't breathe, so in a crowded apartment I'd avoid a skin-tight pair. Block-heeled ankle boots and a cropped jacket balance the silhouette. If the shirt is oversized, tuck it neatly or knot it at the waistband. A metallic bag or gold earrings add a small celebratory touch.
15. Thanksgiving Football Shirt With Relaxed Jeans

If your Thanksgiving revolves around football, build the outfit around a sporty shirt. A baseball-style raglan tee, a team-color graphic or a football-and-turkey design all fit. Relaxed straight jeans give comfort without looking like sweatpants. Add classic sneakers that pick up a color from the shirt, plus a light bomber or zip hoodie if you need a layer. A cap works for a backyard game, though I'd take it off at the table. A compact crossbody keeps your hands free for serving and moving between rooms, and the whole outfit holds up to neighborhood walks and hours on the couch.
16. Teacher Thanksgiving Shirt With Trousers

A teacher shirt works best with tailored separates, since you'll probably wear it to class first and the family gathering later. Choose a friendly graphic with books, pencils or a gratitude message, and pair it with ankle-length trousers in camel or olive. A light cardigan comes off when the classroom heats up. Supportive loafers or clean slip-on sneakers matter on a day spent standing. Pick a graphic with only a couple of colors and large, readable lettering, because tiny busy artwork just looks smudged from across a room. A structured tote carries your essentials, and the outfit moves on to dinner without a change.
17. Plus-Size Thanksgiving Shirt With Leggings

For plus-size outfits, I build this look around where each layer ends. A tunic-length tee or light sweatshirt with a relaxed fit through the stomach and hips goes over thick black leggings or ponte pants. Ponte is a firmer double knit that smooths and holds its shape better than standard leggings. Add an open cardigan that ends at roughly the same length as the shirt, because layers that end at different points cut across the widest part of the body. Knee-high riding boots continue the vertical line, and supportive sneakers make it casual. Size by the shoulder seam and the drape you like rather than automatically sizing up, which mostly adds bulk.
18. Cropped Thanksgiving Shirt With High-Rise Jeans

A cropped sweatshirt can flatter a petite frame because it raises the visual waistline and removes extra fabric. The hem should land at the top of high-rise jeans rather than leaving a band of midriff on show at the family table. Dark straight or slim jeans make a long, clean leg line, and platform sneakers or low-heeled ankle boots add a little height. A short puffer vest adds warmth without breaking the compact proportions. If the crop rides up too far when you reach, a fitted tank underneath covers the gap. It handles family meals, travel and outdoor activities.
19. Maternity Thanksgiving Shirt With Knit Pants

A maternity shirt should stretch comfortably without going shapeless. A ruched-side tee or long-sleeve top designed to follow the bump keeps a graphic centered instead of stretched and distorted. Pair it with over-the-bump knit pants or soft maternity flares in black or charcoal. A long open cardigan creates vertical lines and lets you adjust warmth, which helps because many expectant mothers run warm. Cushioned loafers or slip-on sneakers save you bending to tie laces. Skip stiff waistbands and heavy layers that dig in when you sit. A light scarf and a roomy tote complete it.
20. Matching Family Thanksgiving Shirt With Jeans

Matching family shirts make group photos look coordinated, but nobody needs an identical outfit. I like the same graphic printed on two or three related shirt colors, such as cream, rust and olive, spread across the group. Adults can wear straight or relaxed jeans and kids soft pull-on pants. Shoes stay simple, white sneakers or brown boots. Let each person add their own cardigan, jacket or vest for their temperature. Skip any other patterns if the graphic is already colorful. Repeating a few colors is enough, and matching accessories add nothing to the photo.
21. Thanksgiving Shirt With Plaid Overshirt

A graphic tee under an open plaid overshirt is the easiest warm layer on this list. Start with a cream or olive tee carrying a small message, then add a flannel in brown or muted orange. Black straight jeans stop it getting busy. My rule is that at least one color in the plaid should appear in the graphic, so the two pieces look chosen together. Roll the flannel sleeves a couple of times to give some shape. Lug-sole boots or leather sneakers finish it, with a small backpack or crossbody. It travels well, since the flannel goes on and off as the temperature changes.
22. Sequin Thanksgiving Shirt With Dark Denim

A sequin shirt is for anyone who wants a little sparkle at the table. Choose restrained embellishment, a small sequin turkey or a short message, rather than an all-over sequin top. Dark straight jeans ground the shine, and a black or camel blazer gives it more structure for dinner. Check the inside seams and the back of the sequin panel before you commit. Scratchy stitching against the skin gets old by the second hour, and a soft lining helps a lot. Pointed flats or low block heels and a plain clutch with no extra glitter finish it, with minimal earrings.
23. Boho Thanksgiving Shirt With Maxi Skirt

A boho shirt needs soft textures and earthy colors around it. Choose a relaxed tee or peasant top with botanical embroidery or a subtle pumpkin, and a flowing maxi skirt in rust or chocolate. Two loose pieces together hide your shape completely, so I tuck the shirt partly into the waistband. If the skirt has a busy print, keep the shirt to one or two colors. Suede ankle boots ground it and a fringed crossbody adds texture, with hammered metal earrings and a light cardigan to finish. Make sure the skirt clears the ground, since a dragging maxi soaks up mud on an outdoor day.
24. Neutral Thanksgiving Shirt With Cream Jeans

A pale outfit is a fresh alternative to the dark colors November usually brings. Start with a taupe or oatmeal top with brown or muted gold lettering and pair it with cream straight-leg jeans. A camel cardigan or beige shacket adds warmth and some contrast. Brown loafers or taupe ankle boots complete the lower half, and a dark chocolate belt and bag anchor the light palette. I'll be practical here: cream jeans and gravy don't mix, so if you're cooking, wear an apron and rinse any spot with cold water quickly. Gold jewelry adds polish without another color.
25. Dressy Thanksgiving Shirt With Tailored Pants

For a formal Thanksgiving meal, a dressy shirt can suggest the season without any graphic at all. A silky button-up in copper or burgundy does it through color alone, or through small details such as a draped neckline or a delicate leaf print. Tuck it cleanly into tailored black or chocolate trousers. Silky polyester and real silk both show sweat at the underarm in a warm room, so I'd choose a darker shade or a slightly textured weave if you run warm. Pointed pumps or polished loafers depending on comfort, a structured blazer for warmth, and pearl or gold earrings finish it.
Keeping a Printed or Embroidered Shirt Looking New
A holiday shirt gets worn only a few times a year, so it should still look good next November. How you wash it matters more than how it was decorated, but each decoration has its own weak point.
- Screen prints and direct-to-garment prints: turn the shirt inside out and wash cold. Hot water and high dryer heat fade the ink and crack it over time.
- Heat-transfer vinyl, the smooth, slightly raised lettering on many personalized shirts: never iron directly over it, and skip the hot dryer. Heat can lift the edges and start it peeling.
- Embroidery: wash inside out, then press from the back with a cloth between iron and fabric so the stitches keep their raised texture.
- Sequins: hand wash, or use a mesh bag on a gentle cycle, and dry flat. Tumble drying pulls sequins loose.
I hang printed shirts to dry whenever I can. It takes longer, but it's the one habit that keeps a graphic crisp and stops the shirt shrinking out of its fit.
Let the Shirt Lead and Keep the Rest Simple
Thanksgiving clothes have to handle cooking, eating, visiting and a nap on the couch, and a shirt with some personality makes the day more fun. Graphic tees, sweatshirts, embroidered tops, personalized designs and silky blouses all become full outfits once the pieces around them are chosen with care. Start with a shirt that suits your gathering, then pick bottoms that give the right mix of comfort and structure. Coordinated shoes, one layer and a few simple accessories make even a playful turkey tee look intentional. Adapt any of these to your body, your weather and how formal your table runs.
