A bomber in summer sounds wrong until you've sat through an air-conditioned train ride in a sundress. The right one is unlined, light and short, and it adds shape to a sundress, a bit of edge to cutoffs and a sporty finish to linen. Cotton, unlined nylon, thin suede and satin all come in warm-weather weights now. I've put together 25 head-to-toe summer looks featuring the bomber jacket, from rooftop dinners to beach evenings, with notes on which version of the jacket suits each one.

Telling a Summer Bomber From a Fall One
Most bombers in shops are built for autumn: a quilted or padded lining, thick ribbed cuffs, sometimes a fleece layer. Worn in July, those feel like a sleeping bag. When I shop for a summer one, I check four things in this order.
- Lining. Unlined, or lined with a thin cotton or mesh. Skip anything quilted or padded.
- Shell fabric. Cotton, thin nylon, a linen blend, satin, or perforated suede. Heavy wool and thick leather are for colder months.
- Rib weight. Cuffs and hem should be a light knit. Thick rib traps heat at the wrists and sits bulky at the hip.
- Size. True to size or a touch roomy, so air moves inside it. A snug bomber feels hot even in a thin fabric.
Where the ribbed hem sits
The elastic rib gathers the jacket wherever it stops, so it adds a little width there. Cropped bombers end at the waist and suit high-rise pants, minis and overalls. Classic hip-length bombers suit slim skirts, dresses and straight jeans. If you're curvy through the hip, let the rib land at the waist rather than across the hip.
1. Bomber jacket with denim shorts outfit summer

Cutoffs are the fastest way into a summer bomber. Start with a light nylon or cotton bomber in olive, beige or washed black over a white ribbed tank or a slim baby tee. Mid-length relaxed shorts with a raw hem keep it easy. The jacket's ribbed hem should stop at or just above the top of the shorts; if it overlaps them, the outfit looks like a jacket and no shorts. White low sneakers, a canvas tote and slim sunglasses suit errands and iced coffee, and the jacket handles the cold shop interiors.
2. White bomber jacket outfit summer

A white cotton bomber reflects heat and brightens whatever it's worn with. For an all-white look, I pair it with a white tank or bodysuit and high-waisted light-wash straight jeans, rolled once or twice to show the ankle. Mixing whites is fine as long as they're the same temperature; an ivory jacket over a bright white tank can make one of them look dingy. White sneakers or flat sandals and small gold jewelry finish it for a casual office day. It also works over a swimsuit for the walk from the beach.
3. Bomber jacket over slip dress summer

A sporty bomber over a soft slip dress is one of my favorite contrasts. A midi slip in champagne, mocha or charcoal with a cropped or standard satin bomber on top looks dressed up but not stiff. Satin on satin can look like pajamas if the two shades are too close, so I go a few tones apart. Strappy heels make it an evening outfit and flat leather slides keep it daytime. A small shoulder bag and layered necklaces add texture, and the jacket keeps you warm on a cool night without covering the dress.
4. Bomber jacket with biker shorts outfit summer

A bomber with biker shorts is pure athleisure, and the jacket is what makes it look planned rather than straight from the gym. I'd go for a light nylon bomber in cobalt or soft sage over a fitted crop top or a sporty racerback tank, with black or charcoal shorts. The shorts need to be thick enough that they don't turn see-through when you bend. Crew socks, chunky sneakers, a cap and a belt bag suit travel days and post-workout brunch. Unlined nylon keeps the heat down.
5. Cropped bomber jacket outfit summer

A cropped bomber ends at the waist, so it pairs naturally with high-rise bottoms. I like a black leather or faux-leather version over a fitted white tee and high-waisted linen or crepe wide-legs. Faux leather is the warmer of the two since it doesn't breathe, so I'd save it for evenings. The short jacket marks the waist and the long trouser takes the leg to the floor. Pointed mules or sleek slides, a structured mini bag and cat-eye sunglasses suit a creative office, a gallery or dinner.
6. Bomber jacket with maxi dress summer

A flowing maxi under a bomber looks unexpected, and that's part of the appeal. The full skirt plays against the ribbed hem and the defined shoulders. Choose a floral or solid maxi with a fitted bodice and a slightly oversized nylon bomber, so the jacket clearly reads as a layer. Cotton voile or rayon keeps the dress cool. White sneakers are for sightseeing, and flat sandals or espadrilles make it a vacation look. One pendant and a woven tote are enough. When the heat peaks, the jacket comes off and folds small.
7. Bomber jacket with linen pants summer

Linen trousers with a bomber look more refined than you'd expect. High-waisted wide-leg linen in cream, sand or soft olive with a tucked sleeveless blouse or knit tank sets a calm base, and an unlined cotton bomber in a nearby neutral finishes it. Linen creases where the jacket hem rubs the hips, which I've stopped worrying about; it's part of the fabric. Leather slides or woven mules, a leather tote and round sunglasses suit a commute, a business lunch or a museum afternoon.
8. Bomber jacket with mini skirt summer

A mini skirt and bomber have a young, playful energy. A high-waisted A-line mini in denim, cotton twill or light faux leather with a tucked ribbed tank or graphic baby tee works well. Here the jacket should be cropped to the waist; a hip-length bomber over a mini nearly covers the skirt. White ankle socks with chunky platform sneakers give it a retro streetwear feel, while flat sandals soften it. A mini shoulder bag and small hoops suit festivals and café afternoons.
9. Bomber jacket with cargo pants summer

Cargo pants and a bomber come from the same military roots, so they look natural together. Relaxed cargos in light cotton or a nylon blend, in khaki, stone or olive, need a fitted base: a white tank or cropped ribbed tee tucked in. Without it, two roomy pieces make the outfit look bulky. Olive or black nylon on top, then combat boots or lug-sole sandals, a canvas crossbody and dark oval sunglasses. Boots in summer heat are a choice, so I'd pick the lug sandals for a long day out.
10. Bomber jacket with joggers outfit summer

A bomber and joggers make a comfortable outfit that still looks put together. Light cotton-blend joggers with a tapered leg and elastic ankle pair best with a matching or tonal bomber, which turns the two into a set. A white or heather-gray tank or light crewneck goes underneath. Fabric decides whether this reads as styled or lazy: skip heavy fleece and look for light French terry or tech nylon that breathes. Clean white sneakers and a backpack or belt bag suit travel and weekend errands.
11. Brown suede bomber jacket outfit summer

A brown suede bomber jacket adds warm texture, and unlined or perforated versions are light enough for summer evenings. Pair a cropped one with a white ribbed tank dress and chunky white sneakers, or wear it over ivory linen shorts and an open button-down on a cami. Suede marks with water and sweat, so I wear it over a layer and keep it in a bag if rain is forecast. Leather slides, a woven crossbody and gold jewelry suit sunset dinners and outdoor concerts.
12. Satin bomber jacket outfit summer

A satin bomber has a soft sheen and a fluid drape, and it adds almost no warmth. For evening, layer black or champagne satin over a matching cami and dark tailored high-waisted shorts, with strappy heels and a small clutch. For daytime, switch to a white tank, relaxed light-wash jeans and flat mules. Satin shows creases from sitting and catches on rough bag straps and bracelets, so I keep the jewelry smooth: a fine chain and a slim watch. It works for dinner and then a bar.
13. Bomber jacket with floral dress summer

Throw a bomber over a floral dress and the print instantly looks less sugary. A midi in chiffon or cotton voile with a small, muted or pastel print suits it best. I pull the jacket color from the print, a dusty blue bomber over a blue floral for example, so the two pieces look meant for each other rather than random. White low sneakers keep it daytime, while nude flat sandals soften it for brunch or a baby shower. A rattan bag and studs finish it for garden parties and weekends.
14. Oversized bomber jacket outfit summer

An oversized bomber needs slim pieces underneath, or the whole outfit swallows you. I put an oversized nylon bomber in black, olive or cream over a fitted midi tank dress, or a slim ribbed top tucked into tailored shorts. Dropped shoulders and a slightly longer body give the right slouch; if the shoulder seam falls past mid-upper-arm, it starts to look borrowed rather than chosen. Chunky platform sandals or dad sneakers, a baguette bag and slim oval sunglasses suit cool nights and city walks.
15. Bomber jacket with wide leg jeans summer

Wide-leg jeans have a retro shape, and a bomber sharpens them without losing the ease. High-waisted light-wash or white denim with a tucked tank or sleeveless bodysuit gives a clean base. Here I'd pick a black or navy bomber that ends at the waist or just at the hip bone; a longer one cuts across the widest part of the jean. Pointed kitten heels or flat leather slides make it neater. A structured leather bag and slim dark sunglasses suit casual Fridays and dinner dates.
16. Bomber jacket matching set summer

A bomber and matching shorts or pants is one decision instead of three. Cotton poplin, linen blends or soft nylon keep a co-ord cool. A cream or sage bomber with matching relaxed shorts over a white tank or bralette is easy, with white sneakers and a small crossbody. Matching sets are also a good buy because you can split them: the bomber goes over a dress, and the shorts go with a plain tee. Small gold hoops finish it for travel days, brunch and exploring a new city.
17. Bomber jacket with overalls summer

Overalls are playful on their own, and a bomber gives them a bit of street edge. Light denim overalls with a relaxed fit and a short inseam or rolled cuffs keep it summery. A fitted white tee or striped tank goes underneath, then a cropped or waist-length bomber on top. Overalls have no waist, so a cropped jacket is what gives the outfit one. White sneakers or flat platforms, a canvas tote or mini backpack and beaded bracelets suit markets and festivals, with the jacket ready when clouds roll in.
18. Bomber jacket with white jeans summer

White jeans can look dressy on their own, and a bomber pulls them back into everyday clothes. Straight or slim white jeans in a breathable cotton blend with a tucked knit tank or sleeveless blouse in lavender, mint or blush keep things light. A beige or cream bomber stays soft; black makes it sharper. Pick white denim that's thick enough not to show pockets through the front, and wear skin-tone underwear. Nude flat sandals or white sneakers, a rattan bag and layered necklaces suit lunch dates and garden parties.
19. Bomber jacket with pleated skirt summer

A pleated midi with a bomber balances a pretty skirt with a sporty jacket. Satin or light polyester pleats in blush, champagne or dove gray move nicely when you walk. A slim tank or fitted tee tucked in and a cropped bomber at the waist show off the high rise. Polyester pleats hold their shape through washing far better than natural fibers, which matters on a skirt you'll wear a lot. Pointed flats or low block heels, a chain-strap bag and pearl studs take it from day to evening.
20. Bomber jacket with chino shorts summer

Chino shorts are the neater cousin of cutoffs, and with a bomber they make a smart casual outfit. Mid-length khaki, navy or stone chinos with a tucked linen button-down or sleeveless blouse set a tidy base. A fitted cotton bomber in a pairing color, olive with khaki or cream with navy, goes on top. Chinos are cut with more structure than denim shorts, so I size them to the waist and check that the leg opening doesn't flare out. Loafers or woven slides, a leather belt and a structured tote suit casual Fridays and brunch.
21. Bomber jacket with midi skirt summer

A fitted midi skirt and a bomber make a long, lean outfit. A ribbed knit or stretch-cotton midi in black, cream or olive with a fitted tank or sleeveless turtleneck tucked in gives a slim column. A standard-length bomber with a little room skims the hip and gives the narrow skirt some contrast. Ribbed knit skirts can cling and show lines, so I'd choose a thicker rib or wear smoothing shorts. Flat strappy sandals or low mules, a structured mini bag and layered gold necklaces suit dinner or an art opening.
22. Bomber jacket with graphic tee and shorts summer

A graphic tee tucked into high-waisted shorts is basically a summer uniform, and a bomber makes it look finished. A vintage band tee or faded logo shirt tucked into paper-bag or tailored Bermuda shorts works with a lightweight nylon bomber in black, green or cream. A thinner, softer tee tucks in more smoothly than a heavy cotton one, which bunches at the waist. White crew socks, retro sneakers, a small bag and a cap give it a '90s street feel for concerts and weekends.
23. Bomber jacket with culottes summer

Culottes are cooler than full-length trousers and look sharp with a bomber. Wide-leg culottes in crepe, linen or Tencel ending mid-calf pair with a tucked fitted tank or sleeveless knit. A cropped bomber shows the high waist and keeps the proportions in check; a longer one with culottes leaves very little leg showing. I'd add a slight heel if you're petite, since culottes shorten the leg. Flat mules or slides, a leather shoulder bag and sculptural earrings suit creative offices, galleries and dinner.
24. Bomber jacket with tennis skirt summer

A tennis skirt brings a preppy, sporty feel. A white or pastel pleated skirt with built-in shorts is comfortable and practical, worn with a tucked slim polo or ribbed tank. Layer a light bomber in a contrast or tonal color, navy over white or sage over blush. Ankle socks and classic court sneakers finish the athletic look, with a sporty watch and a ponytail. Short bombers suit a tennis skirt best because the skirt is so short. It's right for brunch, daytime dates or mini golf.
25. Lightweight bomber jacket outfit summer

Sometimes the plainest outfit works hardest. An unlined bomber in cotton or a linen blend, in stone, soft gray or faded black, over a tank dress or T-shirt dress in a nearby neutral is light in both color and weight. Linen-blend bombers wrinkle more than cotton but breathe better on hot days, so it depends on whether you care more about crispness or air. White sneakers or flat sandals, a canvas tote and wayfarers suit errands, meetups and travel days.
Satin Snags, Suede Spots and Nylon in the Washer
A summer bomber gets worn often and sweated in, so care decides how long it lasts. Each fabric needs something slightly different.
- Nylon: usually machine-washable on a cool, gentle cycle, zipped up and turned inside out. Hang it to dry; high dryer heat can pucker the seams.
- Cotton and linen blends: wash cool and reshape while damp. The ribbing can stretch if hung by the hem, so hang it by the shoulders.
- Satin: check the label, as many need hand washing or dry cleaning. Keep it away from velcro, rough bag straps and chunky bracelets, which pull threads.
- Suede: spot-clean only, and brush it once dry with a suede brush. Treat it with a water-repellent spray before the season starts.
Whatever the fabric, close the zip before washing or storing. An open zip snags the lining and other clothes, and storing a bomber on a wide hanger keeps the shoulders from denting.
Packed Away by May? Not This Jacket
A bomber earns its place in a summer wardrobe if you choose the fabric carefully. Light cotton, unlined nylon, linen blends and satin all work, worn over shorts, minis, slip dresses and airy trousers. Whichever way your style leans, sporty, streetwear or neater, one of these outfits will fit it. Use them as a starting point, then play with color and proportion. The jacket that's usually packed away by May turns out to be the thing you'll reach for every time a restaurant blasts the air conditioning.
