Packing for Iceland's capital is mostly a wind problem. You can see sun, rain and a gust that turns your umbrella inside out in the same afternoon, so bulk doesn't help nearly as much as a good waterproof shell and layers you can strip off in a warm cafe. Local dressing leans plain and practical: dark neutrals, clean lines and outerwear that has clearly been chosen to work. I've built the 25 looks below around what you'll actually do there, from walking Laugavegur and chasing the aurora to an afternoon at a geothermal lagoon, and I've noted where each piece earns its space in a suitcase.
Fitting a Week in Iceland Into One Suitcase
Most of the outfits below share pieces, and that's deliberate. When I plan an Iceland capsule, I build around one shell, one warm coat and a set of layers that all work in one color family, so every top goes with every bottom. A week usually fits in a medium case like this:
- Base: two merino long-sleeve tops and one pair of thermal leggings. Merino can be worn several days between washes without smelling.
- Middle: one chunky sweater, one fine-knit sweater and one fleece zip-up.
- Outer: a waterproof hooded shell and, in winter, an insulated parka. In summer the shell plus fleece is usually enough.
- Bottoms: dark jeans, one pair of smarter trousers and waterproof hiking pants for any waterfall or glacier day.
- Feet: waterproof walking boots worn on the plane, plus one smarter pair of ankle boots.
- Extras: a swimsuit for the lagoons, a beanie, a buff, touchscreen gloves and enough wool socks for one fresh pair a day.
Wear the bulkiest items to travel. I also leave room for one souvenir sweater, because plenty of visitors end up buying one and then have nowhere to put it.
1. What to wear in Reykjavik layered city look
For a day downtown, I start with slim dark jeans and a merino base layer, because merino keeps you warm without the clammy feeling of cotton when you go from wind into a hot shop. A chunky cream or charcoal sweater goes over it, then a waterproof, windproof parka that reaches mid-thigh so the wind can't reach your lower back. Insulated ankle boots with real tread matter more than anything on wet cobbles. A waterproof crossbody keeps your phone dry, and a wool beanie stays in your pocket for the harbor end of the walk. Each layer comes off in sequence as you go indoors.
2. Cozy café outfit Reykjavik wool sweater jeans
A cafe morning near Hallgrimskirkja is where a smarter outfit makes sense. Black straight-leg trousers look sleeker than jeans, and a fine merino or cashmere sweater in oatmeal or dove grey gives warmth without bulk under a coat. I pair it with a long tailored wool coat, and the one check I make is the collar: it should stand up and close against wind, or the coat is only half doing its job. Leather ankle boots with a low block heel are comfortable for walking, and a slim leather tote holds the essentials. It's a quiet look that fits how people in the city tend to dress.
3. Reykjavik harbor walk windproof outfit
The Old Harbour path near the Sun Voyager sculpture is often the windiest walk in town, and hats do get taken. I layer fleece-lined thermal leggings under relaxed straight jeans, then a fleece zip-up as the mid-layer. A hooded waterproof shell goes on top to block wind and sea spray. Wooden docks get slick, so wear waterproof hiking sneakers or light boots with a grippy sole. Wrap a wool scarf high around the neck, and bring touchscreen gloves so you're not taking them off for every photo of the mountains across the bay.
4. Golden Circle day trip outfit
On a Golden Circle day, you're far from shelter between Thingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss, and the weather can turn on the drive. I build it like a hiking kit: a merino or synthetic base that wicks sweat, a thin fleece or down vest that packs small, and a fully waterproof hooded shell. Water-resistant hiking pants keep wet grass and waterfall spray off your legs, which jeans never do. On uneven rock I want sturdy waterproof hiking boots with ankle support. In the daypack go spare wool socks and a hat, since the Gullfoss viewpoint is usually colder and wetter than the car park.
5. Summer outfit Reykjavik casual light layers
Summer days in the city usually sit around 10 to 13 degrees Celsius with a steady breeze, so leave the shorts at home. Lighter-wash straight jeans and a long-sleeve Breton tee cover you without weight. A bright rain jacket in yellow or coral folds into a daypack and stands out in photos against grey skies. Waterproof sneakers or leather slip-ons are fine on city streets. I'd add a cap, because summer sun sits low and long in the sky, and a light scarf that doubles as a wrap when the evening wind picks up on Laugavegur.
6. Northern Lights chasing outfit winter layers
Aurora watching is cold in a way walking never is, because you stand still for an hour or more. Start with full thermal base layers top and bottom, add a fleece pullover, and wear fleece-lined leggings or down pants under waterproof snow pants. A heavy insulated parka with a closable hood is worth more here than any other piece. Thick wool socks go into snow boots that aren't laced too tight, since tight laces cut circulation and make toes colder. Hand warmers inside touchscreen gloves keep fingers working the camera, and a merino balaclava or buff protects your face.
7. Smart casual dinner outfit Reykjavik knit dress
For dinner near Harpa, a ribbed knit midi in charcoal or burgundy is warm, comfortable and smart enough for a nice restaurant. I always add thick opaque tights; bare legs and Icelandic wind are a bad mix even for a short walk. Heeled ankle boots should be waterproof and have a rubber sole, because polished lobby floors get slippery with tracked-in rain. A tailored wool coat in camel or black finishes it. Keep jewelry small and gold, and carry a structured bag that can sit on your lap if the restaurant has no coat check.
8. Blue Lagoon outfit swimwear with layers
Lagoon visits are all about the changing room, so I dress for speed. Wear the swimsuit, one-piece or bikini, under soft leggings and an oversized sweater you can pull off in one move. Slides protect your feet on wet walkways and slip on without bending. A packable down jacket in your tote covers the cold walk between building and water. Bring a waterproof phone pouch if you want photos. The minerals in the water are known to leave long hair stiff and tangled, so I braid it and work in plenty of conditioner before going in.
9. Rainy day outfit Reykjavik waterproof trench coat
Steady drizzle is normal, so I plan a rainy-day outfit for the museum and Harpa rather than hoping for sun. Black skinny jeans hide puddle splash. A navy and cream striped sweater gives the look some interest under a waterproof trench with sealed seams and a hood. Check the seams before you trust a trench: plenty of fashion trenches are only water-resistant and soak through at the shoulders. Waterproof leather ankle boots with lug soles grip slick pavement. An umbrella is a backup at best in this wind; a small crossbody tucked under the coat keeps both hands free.
10. Fall transitional outfit Reykjavik wool turtleneck layers
September and October bring cold mornings and soft afternoon light, and a thin wool turtleneck in forest green or rust is the base I reach for. It sits smoothly under a coat and covers the neck where wind gets in. Cropped wide-leg trousers with thick ribbed socks showing above leather boots give the outfit some personality, though I'd only wear the crop on calmer days, since wind finds bare ankles fast. A mid-weight wool-blend coat handles the swing from chilly morning to mild afternoon. An oversized plaid scarf and gloves in the pocket cover the drop at dusk.
11. Sporty Reykjavik street style outfit athleisure
Athleisure is perfectly normal for a brunch or grocery run, and it packs light. High-waisted matte black leggings and an oversized grey hoodie are the base. I'd add a long quilted vest rather than a jacket, because it keeps your core warm while your arms move freely. Chunky waterproof sneakers handle damp pavements. A nylon belt bag worn crossbody holds a phone and card. The weak point is rain: a cotton hoodie soaks through and stays wet for hours, so bring a shell for this outfit if the forecast looks uncertain.
12. Snowy day outfit Reykjavik insulated snow pants
Fresh snow turns the city pretty, but slush and black ice underneath are the real hazard. Insulated snow pants with reinforced knees keep your legs dry when you kneel for a photo or sit on a snowy bench. Underneath, a thermal top and a thick wool sweater handle the cold, with a long parka that covers your hips. Waterproof snow boots with deep tread are essential, and I'd slip on traction cleats if the pavements are glazed. Finish with a fleece-lined beanie and ski gloves and you can walk around for hours.
13. Icelandic lopapeysa sweater outfit traditional wool
A lopapeysa, the traditional Icelandic sweater with a round yoke pattern, is made from unspun wool that holds warmth even when damp. It's also scratchy for many people, so I always wear a thin merino layer under it. A charcoal sweater with cream and rust patterning looks best against dark slim jeans. Waterproof leather hiking boots and thick socks keep the look practical. A plain water-resistant parka worn open shows off the yoke, and a solid beanie in one of the yoke colors ties it together. The sweater is loosely knit, so it lets wind through on its own; it needs the shell over it outdoors.
14. Waterfall hike outfit South Coast layers
At Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss the mist soaks you even on a sunny day, and you can walk behind Seljalandsfoss, which means real spray. I use a quick-dry synthetic base layer and a grid fleece, which traps heat but breathes well, under a waterproof jacket with taped seams. Waterproof hiking pants are a must here; wet jeans get heavy, take hours to dry and chill your legs. Waterproof boots with deep tread grip mud and wet rock. Keep a dry bag with spare socks and a microfiber towel in the daypack for the drive back.
15. All grey monochrome outfit Reykjavik winter
Layered greys look clean against black sand and snow, and the outfit is easy to pack because everything matches. Light grey thermals go under mid-grey straight jeans and a charcoal merino crewneck. A dove grey wool-blend overcoat gives the outfit its structure. Grey suede ankle boots finish the tonal line, but I'd only wear suede on dry days; it darkens and stiffens if it soaks through, so spray it with a protector before the trip. A pale grey chunky beanie and matching scarf add texture without breaking the color.
16. Black puffer jacket outfit Reykjavik winter
A glossy black puffer is the coat I'd pack for winter evenings out at cafes and bars. Down puffers hold a lot of warmth for their weight, though the shell isn't always fully waterproof, so check the label. A charcoal wool sweater shows at the collar and cuffs and softens the shine. Black skinny jeans and lace-up combat boots with lug soles keep the line dark and give grip on icy sidewalks. A red wool scarf adds the only color and pulls attention up to your face. Silver hoops and a black ribbed beanie finish it.
17. White puffer jacket outfit wide leg jeans
A white puffer brightens a grey day and looks striking against dark lava rock in photos. The catch is upkeep: white shells pick up grime around the cuffs and hem quickly, so carry a wipe. High-waisted wide-leg jeans balance the puffer's volume on top. A cream beanie matches the jacket, and dark sunglasses help with low winter sun bouncing off snow. Cream waterproof Chelsea boots keep the palette light. It's a good outfit for the street art alleys downtown, but I'd swap to darker trousers for any muddy day trip.
18. Reykjavik nightlife outfit dark jeans and heels
Nightlife in the city is smart casual, so heels and a coat beat a full evening dress. Dark high-waisted jeans in black or indigo are the base, with a silky camisole or bodysuit in emerald or sapphire. Heeled leather ankle boots should have a block heel and a rubber sole; you'll walk between venues on Laugavegur, often on wet or icy pavement. A tailored black wool coat keeps you warm between stops, and coat checks can be busy, so I'd choose one you don't mind carrying. Statement earrings and a small chain-strap bag give it the evening finish.
19. Airport travel outfit Reykjavik comfortable layers
The trip to Keflavik and a long flight call for comfort that still looks tidy. A matching knit lounge set in oatmeal or grey with an elastic waist is easy to sit in for hours. White leather sneakers slip off at security. A packable puffer vest goes over the knit top, and I'd wear your bulkiest shoes and coat on the plane to save case space. An oversized canvas tote takes a neck pillow and extra socks, and sunglasses and a low ponytail finish the travel look.
20. Thermal leggings parka snow boots winter outfit
For a long day outside when the wind chill is low, thermal leggings under a long parka are what I'd wear. Fleece-lined black leggings sit next to the skin, and a thermal long-sleeve top tucked in stops drafts at the waist. A thick wool sweater is the mid-layer, and a knee-length insulated parka with a faux-fur hood blocks gusts around the face. Rated waterproof snow boots with thick soles keep cold from coming up through the ground. Mittens are warmer than gloves because your fingers share heat, so I always bring a pair for the coldest days.
21. Knit midi dress winter outfit Reykjavik
A fitted knit midi in winter white or heather grey works for a slow lunch or gallery afternoon. Ribbed knit holds warmth close, and the midi length covers more leg against wind. Merino tights underneath add warmth without showing. Heeled ankle boots lengthen the leg; choose waterproof leather over suede if rain is forecast. A long camel coat over the shoulders adds polish and looks good in photos. Gold layered necklaces and a structured satchel finish it. The one honest drawback: pale knits show salt and slush marks from the street, so keep this one for a dry day.
22. Wool coat beanie and scarf outfit Reykjavik
A camel wool coat over cream and black is the city outfit I'd pack if I could only bring one smart look. Black tailored trousers and a cream cashmere crewneck form the base. A double-breasted camel coat cut to mid-calf gives the most warmth and polish in one piece, and the longer length protects your legs from wind. Black leather ankle boots with a small block heel ground it. A camel and black check scarf ties the colors together, and a camel beanie and leather gloves complete the palette. Brush the coat after the trip; wool sheds rain if you let it dry naturally.
23. Waterproof rain jacket outfit bright color
On very wet days, I'd choose the brightest rain jacket you can find. Orange, cherry red or yellow stand out against black sand and moss-covered lava, and they make you easier to find on a group tour. Under it, black water-resistant trousers or dark jeans keep the attention on the jacket. Waterproof sneakers or rubber-soled Chelsea boots handle puddles. A plain black beanie and waterproof crossbody keep the rest simple. Look for a jacket with a stiffened hood brim, which keeps rain off your face when it blows sideways.
24. Sky Lagoon spa outfit minimalist swimwear
Sky Lagoon has an ocean-edge pool and a set ritual that moves you between steam, cold plunge and warm water, so the outfit should come off fast. A one-piece in sage or dusty blue suits the calm setting. Wide-leg knit lounge pants and a matching zip hoodie are easy to pull on before and after. Rubber slides grip wet decking. I'd pack the swimsuit and a quick-dry microfiber towel in a canvas tote rather than straw, which stays wet. Leave jewelry at home; the minerals and heat are hard on metal.
25. Glacier lagoon sunset outfit colorful sweater layers
Jokulsarlon at golden hour, with icebergs lit up blue and white, deserves a sweater with some color. A hand-knit wool sweater in cobalt, rust and mustard stands out against the ice. Black fleece-lined leggings keep your legs warm and let the sweater lead. A packable down jacket in a solid color goes on top without competing with the pattern. The viewing areas are wet gravel, so wear sturdy waterproof hiking boots. A knit headband keeps ears warm without crushing your hair, and a crossbody camera bag protects your gear.
What Sideways Rain Does to Wool, Down and Suede
The fabrics in these outfits react very differently to Icelandic weather, and knowing how helps you pick what to wear each morning.
Wool
Wool keeps much of its warmth even when damp, which is why it's the local favorite. It does get heavy and smells of wet sheep until it dries. Hang it to dry at room temperature; putting it on a hot radiator can shrink or felt it.
Down
Down is the warmest filling for its weight, but it clumps and stops insulating when soaked. On rainy days, either wear a shell over a down jacket or choose a synthetic-filled one that still keeps you warm when wet.
Suede and untreated leather
Suede darkens and stiffens in rain and can stain from salt on winter pavements. Treat suede and leather boots with a protector spray before you go and save suede for clear days. Let wet boots dry slowly, stuffed with newspaper, away from direct heat.
Cotton
Cotton is the one fabric I'd keep to a minimum on outdoor days. Jeans and hoodies absorb water, stay wet for hours and pull heat from your body. They're fine for city wandering; for anything outdoors, switch to wool or synthetics.
Packing Light for Wind, Rain and Long Nights
Dressing for the city comes down to three layers done properly: a merino base, a warm middle layer like fleece or a chunky knit, and a waterproof shell that blocks wind. Get those right and everything else is styling. Plan an outfit for each kind of day on your itinerary, from cafe mornings to Golden Circle trips and lagoon afternoons, and repeat the same neutral pieces across them. The weather will change its mind several times a day; your layers should make that easy to handle.
