A maxi skirt is one of the first things I pull for a plus-size client, because it covers the long stretch from waist to ankle in one unbroken line and moves when she walks. It isn't automatic, though. The wrong fabric clings to the stomach and thighs, a waistband in the wrong spot cuts the body in half, and a hem that's two inches too long turns into a tripping hazard on stairs. The 25 outfits below run from brunch and the office to the beach and holiday parties. Under each one I've written what I'd check on the hanger, what the top needs to do, and which body it suits less well.

Where the Waistband Should Sit on a Curvy Body
Before I look at colour or print, I find the narrowest part of the torso. On many plus-size bodies it's higher than the belly button, close to the bottom of the ribs, and a skirt that sits there makes the whole outfit look intentional. A skirt that sits lower, across the softest part of the stomach, tends to roll and fold over by lunchtime.
The type of waistband matters as much as the height.
- Wide flat elastic stays put and doesn't dig; thin elastic rolls and leaves marks
- A smooth yoke, a fitted band of fabric below the waist, gives the hip a clean line before the skirt flares
- Gathered or paper-bag waists add volume at the stomach, so I keep them for slim-waisted, full-hipped shapes
- A side zip with a structured band looks the most tailored, but it has no give after a big meal
Hem length is the second check. With flats, the hem should end just above the ankle bone or skim the top of the foot. Buy it to fit your flattest shoes and wear a slightly lower heel than you planned, rather than tripping on a hem cut for heels.
1. Floral Maxi Skirt with Knit Sweater

The floral-and-knit pairing works because the sweater is light enough to tuck. I choose a high-waisted floral maxi with small or mid-size blooms on a dark or neutral ground, which reads calmer than big flowers on white. A cream or camel fine-gauge sweater goes into the waistband; a chunky knit would add an inch of bulk right at the tummy. Opaque tights help on cooler days. Taupe or cognac ankle boots, gold hoops and a crossbody bag finish it. I'd wear this to brunch or an orchard, and swap to a front-tuck if a full tuck feels tight after lunch.
2. Black Maxi Skirt with Denim Jacket

I treat a black maxi as a base, not an outfit. A fitted white crew tee tucked in, then a cropped denim jacket that ends right at the natural waist, which marks your shape without a belt. White leather sneakers, a canvas tote and a few fine necklaces keep it casual for errands or a market morning. The jacket length matters most: if it stops at the widest part of the hip, it widens you there, so try it on before buying and look for a crop that sits at the waistband.
3. Pleated Satin Maxi Skirt for Work

Pleated satin is polished enough for work and moves well when you walk. Emerald or navy hides more than pale satin, which shows every crease and every line underneath. Tuck in a crisp white button-down and add a slim black or tan belt at the waist. Pointed block heels or ballet flats keep you comfortable through the day, and a tailored blazer covers the meeting-day version. Stud earrings and a structured tote finish it. I'd check the pleats are stitched down for a few inches below the waistband, because loose pleats from the band add volume across the stomach.
4. High-Waisted Maxi Skirt with Crop Top

I'd ignore anyone who tells you plus-size bodies can't wear crop tops. The trick is the skirt: a wide waistband sitting at the smallest part of your torso, so the crop only shows a sliver of skin above it. A cropped knit or structured cropped tank holds its shape better than a soft tee, which rolls up. Strappy flats or wedges, a fine chain and a mini crossbody suit a summer party or outdoor concert. If you'd rather show no skin, the same pairing works with a bodysuit in the crop's colour.
5. Maxi Skirt with Chunky Knit Sweater

A chunky sweater over a fluid skirt balances heavy on top with light below, and the front tuck is what makes it work. Push just the front of the sweater into the waistband and let the sides and back hang loose. Rust, olive and oatmeal suit fall. Leather or suede knee-high boots under the hem keep your legs warm. A long scarf and a slouchy hobo bag complete it. If you're full-busted, I'd go for a V-neck chunky knit rather than a crew; a high neckline with that much texture makes the chest look wider.
6. Denim Maxi Skirt with Graphic Tee and Blazer

A denim maxi is stiffer than any other skirt here, so it holds its own shape rather than following yours, which many curvy clients like. Pair it with a tucked vintage graphic tee, then an oversized blazer in beige, gray or black to add structure and make it smart enough for a creative office. Chunky loafers or white sneakers keep it current, with a cap and leather shoulder bag. Check the back slit; rigid denim without one restricts your stride, and a front slit can split open further than you'd like when you sit.
7. Satin Maxi Skirt Evening Outfit

For evening, I like a bias-cut satin skirt in wine, navy or champagne, with a fitted long-sleeve top or a silky cami tucked in. Bias-cut fabric skims the body because it stretches along the diagonal, and that is the trade-off: it skims everything, so wear smooth, no-show shapewear or a slip if you want a cleaner line over the stomach and hips. Strappy heels or pointed pumps lengthen the leg. Drop earrings and a shimmering clutch are enough. It suits a dinner date or an anniversary, any night you want polish without a dress.
8. Tiered Maxi Skirt with Peasant Blouse

A tiered skirt adds width at each seam, so where those seams fall matters for curvy figures. I want the first tier to start well below the hip, not right on it. Pair it with a light peasant blouse, loosely tucked or knotted at the waist. Flat leather sandals or espadrilles, beaded bracelets, long pendants and a straw bag set the boho mood for a market or garden party. If you're petite, choose a skirt with two or three tiers; five tiers on a short frame looks like a lot of fabric.
9. Knit Maxi Skirt Winter Outfit

Knit maxi skirts are the warmest option here and the easiest to get wrong. Ribbed or cable knits in charcoal, cream or camel look rich, but thin knits cling and show the shape of tights underneath. Choose a heavy, lined knit and a cropped or tucked fitted sweater that defines the waist. Fleece-lined opaque tights add warmth. Knee-high leather boots or waterproof boots handle slush, and a long wool coat with a chunky scarf finishes it for winter shopping or a walk. Knit skirts can stretch at the seat, so hang them folded over a bar, not by the waistband.
10. Wrap Maxi Skirt Vacation Outfit

A wrap maxi is my first pick for a vacation, because you set the waist yourself and it adjusts after a big lunch. A tropical solid or a vivid print, a fitted ribbed tank in white, black or cream, and the wrap forms a V at the waist. Watch the overlap: a wrap with a narrow overlap opens to the thigh in wind, so look for a deep wrap or add a snap. Flat sandals or embellished flip-flops, big sunglasses, a straw hat and a woven tote take it from the beach to dinner. Gold bangles and hoops are plenty of jewellery.
11. Striped Maxi Skirt Fall Outfit

Stripes are less scary than people think. Vertical or diagonal stripes on a maxi lengthen the body, and a loose solid sweater in one of the stripe colours keeps the outfit calm. Tuck just the front so the waistband shows. Tan or cognac ankle boots bring it into fall, and a long pendant follows the vertical line. A structured satchel finishes it for a casual Friday or museum date. Avoid wide horizontal bands at the hip; that is the one stripe placement that does widen.
12. Polka Dot Maxi Skirt Casual Outfit

Polka dots read vintage straight away. A polka dot maxi skirt with a plain tucked tee in white, black or a soft pastel keeps the waist defined. Add a light cardigan in a matching colour for cool days. Red or leopard ballet flats or loafers bring personality, and a top-handle bag, pearls or a scarf tied into a ponytail finish the retro feel. Dot size matters: small to medium dots suit most bodies, while very large dots can look like a costume on a long skirt.
13. Black Maxi Skirt and Leather Jacket Outfit

Leather and a black maxi give you edge without a short hemline. Start with a tucked band tee or a black bodysuit, then a fitted faux leather jacket. The jacket should end at the waist or just below; a longer leather jacket hangs stiffly over the hip and fights the skirt's movement. Chunky platform boots or pointed ankle boots, layered silver chains, stacked rings and a mini crossbody with silver hardware finish it for a concert or a night market.
14. Paisley Maxi Skirt with Turtleneck

Paisley carries several colours, which makes it easy to build around. I pull one shade, cream, burgundy or navy, for a fitted ribbed turtleneck tucked smoothly in. Add a long duster cardigan or a camel wool coat, plus tan or chocolate suede ankle boots. A leather belt at the waist adds shape. Turtlenecks shorten the neck, so if you have a short neck or a full bust, a mock neck gives the same warmth with less bulk at the chin. It's a good Thanksgiving outfit.
15. Linen Maxi Skirt Summer Vacation Outfit

Linen breathes better in heat than almost anything, which is why I pack it for summer trips. A linen maxi in white, beige or sage goes with a sleeveless tank or a cropped linen button-down tied at the waist. Woven flat sandals or espadrilles, a straw visor, a rattan crossbody and wooden jewellery keep it relaxed. Linen creases within an hour of sitting; I'd accept that as part of the look, or choose a linen-viscose blend that wrinkles less. White linen can be sheer, so check it in sunlight.
16. Pleated Maxi Skirt Office Outfit

An office-ready pleated maxi in a muted neutral is easy to repeat through the week. Tuck in a sleeveless blouse, or a light cashmere sweater when the office is cold, and add a thin belt. Pointed kitten heels or pumps lengthen the leg line, with a satchel and a watch. A cropped blazer that hits at the waist handles strong air conditioning. Sunray or accordion pleats move most when you walk; I'd steam them on low and hang them by the loops, because pressing pleats flat takes them out.
17. Velvet Maxi Skirt Holiday Outfit

Velvet is my holiday fabric. A maxi in emerald, sapphire or burgundy with a silky long-sleeve blouse or dressy cami tucked in gives you plush against smooth. Strappy metallic heels, crystal drops and a small embellished clutch add sparkle, and a faux fur stole or cropped jacket over the shoulders handles a cold walk in. Velvet adds visual weight, so I keep the top sleek and in a darker or matching shade. It suits holiday parties, New Year's Eve and winter dinners. Sit on it carefully; velvet crushes and holds the mark.
18. Tiered Chambray Maxi Skirt Summer Outfit

Chambray is a light cotton that looks like denim but breathes like a shirt, which makes a tiered chambray maxi a good hot-weather piece. Pair it with a tucked white eyelet crop top or an off-shoulder blouse. Braided sandals with cushioned footbeds handle a long day on your feet, and a wide straw hat, rattan bag and gold hoops finish it for a picnic or market. The tiers swing with each step. Pre-washed chambray won't shrink much, but unwashed cotton can lose length, so check the label before you hem.
19. Satin Maxi Skirt with Sneakers Outfit

Satin with sneakers is the high-low mix I use for travel days, because you get a dressy skirt you can actually walk in. A bias-cut satin skirt in champagne, olive or mocha, a tucked tank or slim tee, and an oversized denim or utility jacket on top. White leather sneakers or retro trainers keep it practical, with a canvas tote and a cap. On a plus-size body, choose a heavier satin that doesn't cling at the thighs; lighter ones show every movement of your legs.
20. Floral Maxi Skirt and Denim Shirt Outfit

Florals and denim are an easy spring pairing because the stiff shirt holds a shape the soft print can't. Take a light to medium wash button-up and tie it at the front waist for a cropped effect, or tuck it in fully. A front tie suits most bodies as long as the knot lands at the waistband, not below it. Strappy flats or espadrille wedges, a woven tote, a leather watch and small hoops finish it for a market morning that runs into dinner outside.
21. Matching Maxi Skirt and Crop Top Set

Matching sets take every decision out of the morning. A plus-size maxi skirt and crop top in a bold print, tie-dye, or solid color gives one long, unbroken column, and the high waist with a short top defines the waist. Neutral heeled sandals or mules, a structured mini bag and sunglasses are enough; I'd stop at a single cuff bracelet. Buy sets where top and skirt are sized separately, because many bodies are a different size on top and bottom.
22. Faux Leather Maxi Skirt Night Out Outfit

A faux leather maxi is the night-out piece with the most attitude. Choose a high-waisted style with a slight sheen and a slit for walking, then tuck in a silky cami or a black bodysuit. Stiletto sandals or sharp pumps extend the leg line, and a metallic clutch, bold earrings and a cropped moto jacket finish it. Faux leather doesn't breathe, so it gets warm in a crowded bar; a lined version with a viscose lining is more comfortable than an unlined one. Wipe it clean; never machine wash.
23. White Maxi Skirt Summer Outfit

White in summer feels fresh, but it is the least forgiving colour for sheerness. Choose a lined white maxi or wear a nude slip, and check it outdoors before wearing it anywhere. Pair it with a blue and white striped boat-neck top for a nautical feel, or a coral or turquoise tank. Tuck it in. Woven espadrille wedges or flat sandals, a straw circle bag and tortoiseshell sunglasses complete it for a seaside walk or a sunny outdoor party.
24. Printed Maxi Skirt Everyday Outfit

When the skirt is the loud piece, everything else should go quiet. A bold geometric, abstract or tropical print takes centre stage, and I pull the most muted colour in the print for a fitted tee or tank. White sneakers or flat slides keep it easy for lunch or sightseeing, and a neutral crossbody and studs keep it plain. I'd check where the print's largest motifs land; a big shape right across the stomach or hips draws the eye exactly there.
25. Plaid Maxi Skirt Fall Winter Outfit

Plaid in chocolate, tan, black and cream looks rich and less schoolgirl than bright red tartan. Tuck in a black or cream turtleneck and add opaque tights. Black leather or dark suede ankle or knee boots anchor it, with an oversized twill bomber or a long wool coat on top. A leather satchel and wool beret add a preppy note for a holiday market. Plaid needs to line up at the seams; on a cheaply made skirt the checks jump at the side seam, and that is the first thing I look at.
Thigh Chafe, Static and Cling Under a Long Skirt
The problems with maxi skirts are rarely in the photo. They show up an hour in, when thighs rub, a polyester skirt sticks to tights, or a light skirt blows up against the legs.
- Wear bike shorts or slip shorts underneath in summer; they stop chafing and make a sheer skirt safe
- Static comes from synthetic skirts over synthetic tights; a cotton-rich tight or a light mist of water on the lining calms it
- A lining in viscose or cotton breathes better than a polyester one
- In wind, a heavier fabric or a skirt with a bit of weight at the hem stays down
Stairs and car doors are the other test. Lift the front of the skirt slightly with one hand going up steps, and gather it before you swing your legs out of a car, since a long hem is easy to step on or shut in the door. If you take a lot of public transport, a skirt that stops just above the ankle is safer than one that skims the floor.
Most of these fixes cost little and turn a skirt you love in the mirror into one you'll still be happy wearing at the end of the day.
Waist at Your Narrowest, Hem Just Off the Floor
Maxi skirts work across every season in a plus-size wardrobe, from linen in July to velvet in December. The rules that carry through every outfit are simple: put the waistband at your narrowest point, choose fabric heavy enough to hang rather than cling, and keep the top fitted or tucked so the skirt has somewhere to start. Whatever you reach for this season, choose the one that lets you celebrate your curves and still walk, sit and climb stairs without thinking about it.
