Rain is the weather that makes people give up on getting dressed, and it doesn't need to. When I plan a wet-day outfit, I work from the ground up: shoes that grip and keep water out, hems that stay off the pavement, a bag that closes, and then a coat that actually sheds rain. Everything in between can be the clothes you love. The outfits below cover work, errands, long walks and lazy weekends, and you'll see trench coats, waterproof shells, cropped trousers, dark denim and sturdy boots again and again, because they move from a soaked sidewalk to a dry room without looking out of place. Adjust the colors and cuts to your own body and climate.

Water Resistant Is Not Waterproof
Coat labels use these words loosely, and the difference matters once you're out in a downpour. Here's how I read them when shopping with someone:
- Water resistant usually means a tightly woven fabric with a repellent finish. It sheds drizzle and short showers, but steady rain will soak through, especially at the shoulders and wherever a bag strap presses.
- Waterproof means a coated fabric or a membrane layer that blocks water entirely. Look for taped or sealed seams too; stitching holes let water in even when the fabric itself is waterproof.
- Breathable describes a waterproof fabric that lets sweat vapor out. Without it, you can end up damp from the inside on a mild, rainy walk.
The repellent finish on most coats wears off with use and washing. When rain starts soaking into the surface instead of beading, many coats can be refreshed with a wash-in or spray-on reproofer, following the care label. Trench coats in cotton gabardine are water resistant, not waterproof, which is why I pair them with an umbrella on heavy days.
1. Fall Rainy Day Trench Coat And Jeans Outfit

A trench over dark denim is the first rainy outfit I'd teach anyone. Beige water-resistant trench, fitted black turtleneck, dark straight-leg jeans. Dark denim hides the small splashes that show instantly on light washes, and a straight leg slides inside ankle rain boots instead of bunching over them. I choose black boots with a low block heel and a deep tread, because smooth soles on wet stone are how people fall. A crossbody worn under the coat, a compact neutral umbrella and a burgundy scarf. On a mild day, wear the trench open with the sleeves pushed up.
2. Fall Rainy Day Sweater And Rain Boots Outfit

For a day of steady drizzle, comfort and good boots matter more than anything else. A chunky oatmeal sweater with coated black leggings: the coating sheds light rain and contrasts nicely with the soft knit. Knee-high matte rain boots in black or deep olive get you through puddles. Rubber boots don't breathe, so I always put thick ribbed socks inside to soak up sweat, or your feet feel damp even when they're dry. A light hooded raincoat that covers the hips but lets you move, a water-resistant tote and small silver hoops. Errands and school runs.
3. Fall Rainy Day Midi Dress And Boots Outfit

A midi dress is perfectly workable in rain if the hem stays out of the wet. I choose a long-sleeve knit midi in rust, forest or navy that ends above the ankle, under a belted waterproof trench that covers most of it. Knee-high rain boots meet the hem so no leg is exposed to spray from passing cars. Opaque tights for cold days. Wear a small shoulder bag under the coat; a strap over a wet coat wicks water onto your clothes. A patterned scarf and a clear dome umbrella, which comes down low around the shoulders, finish it.
4. Fall Rainy Day Blazer And Trousers Outfit

On a wet commute to the office, I treat the outfit and the rain gear as two separate layers. Underneath: an oversized charcoal blazer, a fine cream sweater and ankle-length black trousers. Cropped hems are the trick, because they clear puddles and show off waterproof Chelsea boots. Over the top, a light hooded shell for the walk, off at the door. If you'd rather carry less, a water-resistant tailored jacket replaces both. A structured nylon tote with a zip, room for the umbrella, studs and a leather belt. Charcoal, black, cream and camel keep it all office-friendly.
5. Fall Rainy Day Shacket And Leggings Outfit

A shacket feels right on a damp, casual day, but most are wool or brushed cotton and will soak through in a real downpour. So I layer a thin, roomy packable shell over the top when the forecast is uncertain; a tight shell crushes the shacket and looks lumpy. Underneath: an oversized plaid shacket, black mock neck and thick high-rise leggings. Waterproof lace-up boots with cushioning. A cap under the hood keeps rain off your face, and a nylon belt bag keeps your phone dry. Crew socks in one color from the plaid finish it.
6. Fall Rainy Day Puffer Vest And Hoodie Outfit

Drizzle that comes and goes is where a vest earns its place: your core stays warm, your arms don't overheat. A light hoodie under a water-resistant puffer vest, with straight-leg utility pants that have a slightly cropped or adjustable hem so nothing drags. Puffer fill clumps if it gets truly soaked, so in heavier rain I put a packable shell over everything. Waterproof hiking-style sneakers or low rain boots give traction. Olive vest, gray hoodie, black pants. A quilted crossbody keeps a hand free for the umbrella or the dog's leash.
7. Fall Rainy Day Leather Jacket And Black Jeans Outfit

Leather and rain are an uneasy pairing. A few drops won't hurt a treated leather jacket, but a soaking can stain it and stiffen it as it dries, so I keep this outfit for light showers or carry a long raincoat to put over it. Black moto jacket, burgundy crewneck, slim straight black jeans. Waterproof combat boots with lug soles carry the same tough line down to the ground. A compact crossbody rather than an open tote, a charcoal umbrella, silver earrings and a knit beanie. The dark base hides street spray; the burgundy adds color.
8. Fall Rainy Day Sweater Dress And Chelsea Boots Outfit

A knee-length ribbed sweater dress with opaque black tights and chunky waterproof Chelsea boots feels put-together with very little thought. The hem stays well clear of puddles at that length. A long hooded raincoat covers most of the knit, and you can cinch it or leave it loose. I tie a silk-look scarf close at the neck, where the collar shields it, because silk spots badly in rain. A small top-handle bag in coated fabric. Wool knits smell when they dry slowly, so I hang this dress somewhere airy once I'm inside.
9. Fall Rainy Day Denim Jacket And Joggers Outfit

Denim soaks up rain and gets heavy, so a denim jacket only works here with a shell over it. Medium-wash jacket, fitted long-sleeve tee and tapered black joggers with cuffed ankles, then a transparent or neutral hooded raincoat so the denim still shows. Waterproof high-top sneakers or short lace-up rain boots. A cap under the hood keeps your face dry, and a small nylon backpack keeps your hands free. Fitted joggers matter: long, wide legs act like wicks and pull water up from the pavement. Good for campus, travel and errands.
10. Fall Rainy Day Cropped Trench And Wide Leg Pants Outfit

A cropped trench updates classic rainwear and shows off the waist of wide trousers. Khaki or olive trench, fitted cream turtleneck, high-waisted wide-leg trousers that stop around the ankle, never brushing the ground. Wide legs splash themselves when you walk, so the length is non-negotiable. Dark brown waterproof ankle boots with a slightly pointed toe keep it polished. The cropped length leaves your seat exposed to the rain, I'll be honest, so it's better for short walks than long ones. For warmth, a thin thermal under the turtleneck beats a bulky sweater.
11. Fall Rainy Day Cardigan And Straight Jeans Outfit

Wool cardigans and rain don't mix well, since wet wool is heavy and slow to dry, so the raincoat here is doing real work. Button a chunky cardigan over a fitted cotton tee, with straight medium or dark jeans cut to the ankle so they sit above waterproof Chelsea boots. A long, light raincoat protects the knit without adding weight. Cream cardigan, indigo jeans, brown boots and an olive raincoat look natural together. A crossbody with a flap or zip and a big umbrella for longer walks. If the cardigan is oversized, tuck the tee and pick structured jeans.
12. Fall Rainy Day Plaid Skirt And Tall Boots Outfit

A plaid skirt still works in rain if it stops at or above mid-calf; longer and the hem soaks up spray from the pavement. A-line or pleated, with a fitted black turtleneck, opaque tights and knee-high waterproof boots. Matching the boots and tights in one color makes a long line from hem to toe. A belted trench protects the skirt from wind and rain. Pleats lose their press when wet, so I'd keep a pleated version for drizzle and choose A-line for downpours. Brown, rust, navy or forest plaid, a compact shoulder bag under the coat and gold earrings.
13. Fall Rainy Day Utility Jacket And Cargo Pants Outfit

Heavy cotton cargos soak up rain and stay wet for hours, so for this outdoors outfit I'd only use technical or quick-drying pants. A hooded utility jacket over a light sweater, with tapered cargos cropped or tucked into the boots. Waterproof hiking boots or lug-sole rain boots grip on mud and wet leaves. Olive jacket, black sweater, stone pants: practical but coordinated. A water-resistant backpack, a ribbed beanie and little jewelry. It's the outfit I'd choose for a nature walk or an outdoor event where you'll be out for hours.
14. Fall Rainy Day Monochrome Black Outfit

All black is the most forgiving rainy outfit, because splashes barely show. A black mock-neck sweater, ankle-length tailored pants, a long minimal black raincoat and waterproof ankle boots in matte or patent. Patent wipes clean in seconds, which I like on a wet day. Vary the textures, soft knit, smooth trousers, slightly glossy coat, so it doesn't look flat. A charcoal scarf adds gentle contrast. A structured bag that closes properly and a clear umbrella to lighten things up. Most people already own the pieces for this.
15. Fall Rainy Day Quilted Jacket And Corduroy Pants Outfit

A quilted jacket is warmer than it looks and lighter than a winter coat. Olive or navy over a cream crewneck, with cropped brown or rust corduroy and waterproof Chelsea boots. Many quilted jackets are water resistant, not waterproof, and the stitching lines let water through in a long downpour, so carry an umbrella or buy one built for wet weather. Corduroy darkens and goes stiff when soaked, so keep the hem high; one narrow roll is fine. A satchel with a secure top, wool-blend socks and a knit hat later in the season.
16. Fall Rainy Day Trench Coat And Sweatsuit Outfit

A matching sweatsuit under a long trench is the comfiest rain outfit I know that still looks deliberate. Hoodie and tapered joggers in heather gray, navy or deep green, with a beige trench for contrast. Cotton fleece absorbs water quickly, so the trench needs to be long enough to cover most of it. Waterproof sneakers for light showers, short rain boots for real puddles. Keep the jogger cuffs close at the ankle. A nylon crossbody, a clean cap and a compact umbrella. Travel days and coffee runs, sorted in two minutes.
17. Fall Rainy Day Poncho And Skinny Jeans Outfit

A poncho covers more than any coat, including a bag worn underneath, which is why I suggest it for long walks in steady rain. Underneath, keep it slim: a fitted turtleneck and dark skinny jeans, or the poncho's volume swallows you. Tall rain boots or waterproof riding boots protect the lower leg the poncho leaves open. Look for one that falls below the hips with a structured hood, side snaps and adjustable closures; without snaps, wind lifts it like a sail. Camel, navy, burgundy or forest. A belt bag under the poncho stays dry.
18. Fall Rainy Day Bomber Jacket And Midi Skirt Outfit

A bomber over a midi skirt sounds unusual, but the sporty jacket and the soft skirt balance each other. Water-resistant bomber, fitted knit top and a straight midi skirt in washable jersey or technical fabric, never silk or viscose, which water-spot. Waterproof lace-up boots for traction. The skirt hem should stay above the boot tops so it doesn't bunch or wick water. A compact backpack, simple hoops and a sturdy umbrella. Black bomber, gray top, olive skirt and black boots go from casual to a little dressier.
19. Fall Rainy Day Flannel And Waterproof Jacket Outfit

Flannel is soft and warm until it gets wet, and then it's cold and heavy, so on rainy days it goes under a shell. An oversized flannel over a fitted thermal, black straight jeans, and a lightweight waterproof jacket in a solid color pulled from the plaid. Short lace-up rain boots keep the casual feel. Wear the flannel open indoors, or buttoned with a loose front tuck. A canvas-look waterproof backpack, a beanie and wool-blend socks, which stay warm even if your feet get damp.
20. Fall Rainy Day Turtleneck And Faux Leather Leggings Outfit

Faux leather leggings shed water better than cotton ones and wipe clean, so they're one of my favorite bottoms for wet days. A long oatmeal turtleneck that covers the hips, and a hooded water-resistant coat in black or dark olive. Lug-sole combat boots with good traction balance the sleek legs. Thick socks go inside the boots, folded low so they don't break the line. Faux leather doesn't breathe, so on a mild, humid day it can feel clammy; save it for cool rain. A structured crossbody and a burgundy umbrella for color.
21. Fall Rainy Day Parka And Mom Jeans Outfit

For cold, windy rain, a hooded parka is the most dependable coat I can recommend. Mid-thigh length covers the seat, which a cropped jacket can't. Underneath, a striped long-sleeve top and high-rise mom jeans, cuffed once or cut to the ankle. Waterproof Chelsea or low lace-up rain boots. An olive parka sits well with blue denim, brown boots and a cream and navy stripe. Check that the hood fits over a beanie before you rely on both. Adjustable waist ties shape the parka over relaxed jeans. A small nylon backpack finishes it.
22. Fall Rainy Day Cape And Knee High Boots Outfit

A rain cape gives generous coverage and room for a sweater underneath. Wear it over a fitted mock neck and slim ponte pants so the outline stays clean. Knee-high waterproof boots protect the lower legs in heavier showers. The arm openings are what I check first: wide slits let rain soak the sleeves of whatever you're wearing. Secure front closures matter too. Camel, navy or black are easy; deep red is bolder. A compact bag under the cape or a slim crossbody, gloves and a dome umbrella. It's a smart choice for a rainy commute.
23. Fall Rainy Day Hoodie And Trench Coat Outfit

Layering a hoodie under a trench gives you a second hood, and it actually helps in sideways rain. Fitted gray hoodie, black ankle-length jeans and a long camel trench with the hood outside the collar. Waterproof black Chelsea boots handle wet sidewalks far better than canvas sneakers, which soak through in minutes. A small crossbody under the coat, a black umbrella, minimal jewelry. Pick a light hoodie without a big kangaroo pocket, or the trench won't close smoothly. Lunch, shopping, travel and casual offices.
24. Fall Rainy Day Matching Knit Set Outfit

A matching knit set is comfortable indoors, and a long raincoat takes care of the weather outside. A fine crewneck sweater with ankle-length pants in charcoal, chocolate or dark green; avoid long, loose hems, which absorb water. A belted waterproof coat and streamlined ankle rain boots. A coated tote sharpens the soft outfit and keeps your things dry. Knit sets pill where a bag strap rubs, so I carry the tote by hand. A patterned scarf and small earrings. Keep every piece in one tone for a longer line.
25. Fall Rainy Day Colorful Raincoat And Dark Denim Outfit

On a gray day, a colored raincoat lifts the whole outfit and makes you easier to see by drivers. Mustard, cobalt, deep red or rich green over a simple cream sweater and dark straight jeans. Black waterproof ankle boots ground the color and hide splashes. Crop the jeans just above the boots. A neutral crossbody, a compact umbrella and quiet earrings so the coat stays the focus. If you love color, repeat the coat's shade once, in socks or a scarf, instead of adding new colors. Errands, commutes and weekend walks.
Drying Out Boots, Wool and Leather Properly
How you dry things after a soaking decides whether they last. A few habits save a lot of ruined pieces.
Leather and suede boots
Stuff them with newspaper or paper towels to draw out moisture and hold their shape, and change the paper once it's damp. Let them dry at room temperature away from radiators and heaters, since direct heat cracks leather. Condition leather once it's dry, and brush suede gently to lift the nap.
Wool coats and knits
Hang wool coats on a wide, shaped hanger so the shoulders don't stretch, with space around them for air. Lay wet sweaters flat on a towel; hanging a soaked knit pulls it out of shape.
Rain shells and umbrellas
Open umbrellas fully to dry so the canopy doesn't mildew in its sleeve. Hang shells inside out briefly so the lining dries, then right side out. Never fold a wet raincoat into a bag overnight; it will smell by morning.
Your Raincoat Does Most of the Work
A good rainy wardrobe rests on a handful of reliable pieces: protective outerwear, layers that stay comfortable damp, bags that close and shoes that grip wet pavement. You don't need a new closet. Your favorite jeans, dresses, trousers, sweaters and skirts work in rain once a raincoat or trench covers them properly. Keep long hems out of puddles, close every bag, and save silk, suede and delicate fabrics for dry days. Neutrals are easy to repeat, while a colored coat or scarf cheers up a gray morning. Fit everything to your own routine and climate, and wet days stop being a wardrobe problem.
