Going out in fall means dressing for two temperatures: a cold sidewalk at eleven at night and a crowded, warm room before that. When I put evening outfits together for this time of year, I build them around a lighter base that's comfortable indoors and one real outer layer that does the outdoor work. The looks below cover dinners, rooftop drinks, concerts, cocktail parties and low-key nights with friends, using leather jackets, blazers, satin skirts, dark denim and tall boots. Most can be rebuilt from what's already in your closet, with hems and heels adjusted to your body and your plans.

Cold Sidewalks, Warm Rooms and the Coat Check
Fall evenings cool quickly after sunset, so a night that starts mild can end with a cold walk home. Inside, a packed bar or concert hall gets warm fast. I plan going-out outfits so the base is comfortable in a warm room and the coat handles everything outside.
- The base should stand alone. If you'll take the jacket off, the top underneath has to look finished. A bodysuit or camisole you'd be happy seen in.
- Tights are the cheapest warmth. Sheer tights take the edge off a cool night; opaque ones are much warmer and hide boot rub on the shin.
- Pick a coat you're willing to check or carry. A long wool coat is warm but heavy on a chair back all night. A cropped leather jacket or blazer is easier if there's no coat check.
- Leave room in the bag. A thin scarf rolled into a small bag adds a surprising amount of warmth at the neck.
1. Black Leather Jacket And Slip Dress Outfit

Leather over satin is a contrast I never get tired of: the jacket gives a slip dress structure, and the dress softens the jacket. A burgundy, chocolate or black midi slip with a slightly relaxed leather jacket is my default for a dinner. Pointed ankle boots beat sandals once the evening cools, and they handle walking between places. One practical note: satin shows every seam underneath it, so try the dress with what you'll wear below before the night. Sheer tights add warmth when the temperature drops.
2. Burgundy Blazer And Wide Leg Jeans Outfit

Burgundy turns dark denim into something you'd wear to a nice restaurant. Start with dark wide-leg jeans and a fitted black bodysuit, which stays tucked and doesn't bunch at the waist the way a tee can. Add a structured burgundy blazer. Pointed pumps make it dressier; heeled ankle boots are warmer and steadier. Wide-leg jeans need to be hemmed to the shoe you'll wear with them, since even an inch too long and they drag through wet streets. Petite frames suit a shorter blazer. Curvier figures do better with a blazer that has some waist shaping.
3. Black Mesh Top And Leather Pants Outfit

Mesh and faux leather together are all texture, so the outfit needs little else. Wear an opaque bodysuit or fitted camisole under the mesh; you'll feel comfortable all night and won't spend time adjusting it. Straight or wide-leg faux-leather trousers keep the look modern, plus pointed black boots and a small metallic bag. Faux leather doesn't breathe, so on a packed dance floor it gets warm quickly. That's why I'd pick a looser leg here rather than skin-tight. Bring a cropped leather jacket or oversized blazer for the walk home.
4. Satin Skirt And Fitted Turtleneck Outfit

A satin midi with a fine turtleneck is the outfit I'd suggest for theater or a nicer dinner. Champagne, copper or deep plum satin with a black or chocolate knit tucked in fully keeps the shape clean. Knee-high boots under the hem close the gap of bare leg and add warmth. Bias-cut skirts move well and give a little through the hips, but they also cling to static on dry fall nights; a quick rub of a dryer sheet on the inside helps. Finish with a wool coat and a small top-handle bag.
5. Sequin Top And Black Trouser Outfit

Sequins become wearable on a normal night when the rest of the outfit is plain tailoring. A sequin camisole or long-sleeve top in black, bronze or deep red with high-waisted wide-leg black trousers is easy to repeat. Check the inside seams before buying, since cheap sequin tops have scratchy backing that irritates the underarm after a few hours. A black blazer goes on outside and comes off once you arrive. Choose pumps or low slingbacks depending on how much walking is planned, and keep jewelry minimal.
6. Sweater Dress And Knee High Boots Outfit

A ribbed sweater dress with knee-high boots is my go-to when it's genuinely cold. Charcoal, camel or dark green creates a smooth base that accessories can dress up. The rib should be dense enough to skim; thin knits cling and show every line. Block-heel leather boots give height you can actually walk in. Over the top, a long wool coat keeps the vertical line uninterrupted. If it feels too plain for the evening, a suede bag or embossed boots add the texture, and statement earrings take care of the rest.
7. Leopard Pants And Black Bodysuit Outfit

Leopard pants are louder than a leopard skirt because they cover more of you, so the rest of the outfit should be quiet. A fitted black bodysuit and a black blazer or cropped jacket keep it controlled. I pick the print scale to the person: smaller markings for petite frames, larger ones for taller women, which keeps it from looking costume-like. Pointed boots extend the leg; platform loafers are a more comfortable option. If you want color, add one burgundy accent and stop there.
8. Denim Mini Skirt And Tall Boots Outfit

A denim mini survives fall when the rest of the outfit is warmer and heavier. Dark or black denim, a fitted long-sleeve knit, opaque tights and knee-high leather boots with a heel you can walk in. Over the top goes an oversized blazer. My one proportion rule here: the blazer hem and the skirt hem should never land at the same spot, or the body looks cut into blocks. A blazer that ends just above or well below the skirt hem looks better. For more coverage, an above-the-knee denim skirt uses the same formula.
9. Corset Top And Straight Leg Jeans Outfit

A corset-style top with straight dark jeans is a confident night look, and structure is what makes it work. Wider straps, boning or firm seaming hold the shape without needing constant adjusting; a top that's too tight leaves marks and digs in after dinner. High-rise jeans meet a shorter top cleanly. Add a cropped blazer, leather jacket or relaxed trench for warmth. Pointed ankle boots make denim look dressier and are much easier to walk in than delicate heels. A tucked bodysuit version gives more coverage.
10. Tuxedo Blazer And Mini Dress Outfit

A tuxedo blazer over a mini dress is a classic for cocktail nights and dinners out. Choose a plain black, navy or burgundy dress and a satin-lapel blazer to match or contrast. Fit the blazer through the shoulders first; tuxedo jackets with sharp shoulders look awkward when they're too big. Sheer tights and pointed pumps, or tall boots when it's cold. A metallic clutch adds light. Keep jewelry restrained, maybe studs and one ring. A dress just above the knee gives a little more coverage.
11. Off Shoulder Sweater And Leather Skirt Outfit

An off-shoulder sweater with a faux-leather midi skirt plays soft knit against smooth leather. Espresso or oxblood skirts look richer than flat black. A fitted sweater suits an A-line skirt; a relaxed knit balances a straighter one. Off-shoulder knits tend to slide during the evening, so a wide-neck style that sits on the edge of the shoulder is easier to wear all night. Tuck the front, then add pointed ankle boots and a structured bag. Your coat should go on without crushing the sweater, so try them together.
12. Cropped Trench And Black Mini Outfit

A cropped trench over a black mini gives a night look a lighter, transitional feel. Camel or stone breaks up the dark base. Sheer tights and sleek ankle boots keep it practical. I like keeping everything under the trench one color, because a monochrome base makes the legs look longer and stops the short jacket from cutting the body into too many sections. If cropped outerwear doesn't suit you, a hip-length trench still shows the dress. A small top-handle bag finishes it.
13. Red Knit Top And Dark Denim Outfit

Red knit and dark denim is an easy way to wear color without a print. A fitted crewneck or square-neck sweater in a strong red goes with indigo or black jeans. A chocolate leather jacket softens the contrast; a black blazer sharpens it. Watch the weight of the knit: too heavy and you'll overheat indoors, too thin and it looks like a basic tee. A fine merino or cotton knit is the sweet spot. Pointed ankle boots and a structured bag complete it. Burgundy accessories with bright red read richer than matching exactly.
14. Olive Cargo Pants And Leather Blazer Outfit

Cargo pants can work for a night out if the pockets are flat and the waistband is structured. Bulky, flapping pockets read as hiking gear. Olive or dark brown pants, a fitted tee and a leather blazer are a good mix of utility and polish. Heeled ankle boots lengthen the leg; pointed loafers work if you want flats. Keep accessories clean, since the cargo shape is already relaxed. It's a good outfit for concerts and casual venues where denim feels too expected.
15. Chocolate Brown Monochrome Outfit

Tonal brown works because different fabrics take the color differently. Smooth trousers, a knit top, a suede jacket and leather boots all in brown look deeper than one flat shade. Start with tailored chocolate trousers and a fitted knit, add suede or a wool coat, and choose espresso boots to keep the line long. A caramel bag gives just enough contrast. Gold jewelry warms the whole thing. Pick the trouser rise and leg that suit your body; tonal dressing is forgiving because nothing breaks the line.
16. Plaid Mini Skirt And Oversized Blazer Outfit

A plaid mini with an oversized blazer works because one piece is fitted and the other is roomy. Keep the top simple with a black turtleneck or bodysuit, and pull the blazer color from the plaid, maybe charcoal, brown or burgundy. Opaque tights and knee-high boots make a short hem wearable on cold nights. Let the pattern be the only busy thing, with a compact bag and minimal jewelry. If a mini isn't for you, an A-line plaid skirt around the knee keeps the same idea.
17. Lace Top And Wide Leg Trousers Outfit

Lace with wide-leg trousers feels special without being formal. A lined lace blouse is easiest; if it's sheer, a simple camisole underneath works. Black lace is classic, ivory or navy softer. High-waisted trousers should fall straight from the hip, hemmed to the heel you'll wear, so they don't drag. If the blouse has detailed sleeves or a high neck, skip the necklace. Lace snags on rough jewelry and bag zips, so a satin clutch is a smarter choice than a studded bag.
18. Denim Jumpsuit And Heeled Boots Outfit

A dark denim jumpsuit is one piece and done, which is great for nights with lots of moving around. A belted or defined waist matters, since without it denim jumpsuits can look boxy. Leave the neckline open over a fitted cami or button it higher. Sit down in it before you buy: a short torso pulls at the crotch every time you take a seat. Heeled ankle boots make it feel dressier. A long camel coat or cropped leather jacket goes on top, and statement earrings do the rest.
19. Metallic Skirt And Black Sweater Outfit

A metallic midi skirt gives shine without full sequins. Pewter, bronze or soft gold with a fitted black sweater keeps it grounded. Metallic fabrics crease easily and the creases catch light, so hang the skirt the day before rather than ironing it at high heat. Black knee-high boots keep the line smooth under the hem. Match your jewelry to the skirt's metal tone. A cropped wool jacket or tailored coat for outdoors. If full metallic feels too bold, a darker finish with a soft sheen is easier.
20. Velvet Blazer And Black Jeans Outfit

A velvet blazer adds depth, especially in burgundy or emerald. Wear it over a fitted cami or bodysuit with black straight-leg jeans. Pumps make it dressier; heeled boots are better on cold nights. Velvet already catches light, so I avoid adding other heavy textures. Velvet also marks when it's crushed, which happens when you sit on the hem of the jacket for hours, so hang it on the chair back at dinner. The shoulders should have some ease so it goes over layers smoothly.
21. Graphic Tee And Satin Skirt Outfit

A graphic tee with a satin midi skirt is one of my favorite ways to dress down satin. Tuck a well-fitting tee into a black, olive or bronze skirt and add a leather jacket or blazer. Pointed ankle boots are steadier than strappy sandals on a long night. An oversized tee can be tucked or knotted at one side for shape. If the graphic sits high on the chest, skip the necklace. It's a personal, relaxed look for concerts and creative venues.
22. Butter Yellow Top And Gray Trouser Outfit

Butter yellow is a soft change from all the black and burgundy of fall nights. A fitted yellow knit or silky blouse over charcoal wide-leg trousers stops the pastel from looking summery. Add a black or deep brown blazer and pointed boots in the same dark tone. Pale yellow can wash out some skin tones, and you'll know at once in a mirror if the face looks gray. If it does, wear the yellow as a cami under an open jacket, away from the face. Silver or gold earrings both work.
23. Knit Two Piece Set And Long Coat Outfit

A knit set looks more polished than loungewear if the knit holds its shape. Stretch it between your hands in the store; if it turns see-through or doesn't spring back, it will bag by the end of dinner. A fitted top with a midi skirt, or a fine sweater with wide-leg pants, in olive, chocolate or plum. Add a long tailored coat, pointed boots and a structured bag. A belt adds shape if the set is relaxed, and bold earrings give it an evening edge. Ideal for long dinners or performances.
24. Slip Skirt And Boxy Leather Jacket Outfit

A bias-cut slip skirt with a boxy leather jacket mixes soft and structured. Black, brown or deep red with a fitted tank or thin long-sleeve top keeps the base slim against the jacket's wide shape. Knee-high boots under the skirt, or pointed ankle boots that meet the hem cleanly. A slightly cropped jacket works well with a high-rise skirt; a longer one is more casual. A compact bag and sculptural earrings finish it.
25. Black Mini Dress And Statement Coat Outfit

A plain black mini dress plus a standout coat is the easiest outfit here. Red, cobalt, leopard or a rich jacquard coat does all the work, so the dress should be simple. Sheer or opaque tights depend on temperature; knee-high boots or pointed pumps finish it. Earrings that repeat one color from the coat tie it together. A statement coat is also what people see first when you arrive and in photos taken outside, which is a good reason to spend on outerwear over the dress. A knee-length dress gives more coverage.
Heel Heights for a Night With Walking
Most of these outfits use pointed ankle boots, knee-high boots or pumps, and the shoe is where a good night most often goes wrong. A block heel spreads your weight and is much steadier on cobblestones, grates and wet pavement than a stiletto. Around two to three inches is a height most people can walk in for hours; higher than that, I'd only recommend it for a seated dinner.
Breaking In and Protecting New Boots
New leather boots almost always rub at the heel and ankle the first few times. Wear them around the house with thick socks for a few evenings before the night out. Leather soles are slippery on wet floors and stone, so a cobbler can add thin rubber soles that grip and stop the leather wearing through. For suede boots, a protective spray before the first wear helps against rain and spilled drinks.
After the Night
Hang velvet and satin straight away so creases drop out overnight. Air out sweaters before folding them. Sequin tops should be turned inside out and hand washed, or spot cleaned; tumbling them loosens threads and sheds sequins.
Comfortable Enough to Stay Out Late
Fall evening outfits get easier when you start with a comfortable base and add one strong layer. Leather, satin, velvet, denim and soft knits create contrast, and a focused color palette ties it together. Tights, boots, tailored coats and structured bags carry lighter pieces into colder nights. Adjust hems, heels and proportions to your body and to how much walking the night involves. The outfits you'll wear most are the ones you forget about once you're out.
