Fall is the one season where getting dressed is mostly about layers, and most of us own more of the right pieces than we think. The outfits below cover workdays, weekends, errands and time outdoors, built from sweaters and jeans as well as midi skirts, sweater dresses, corduroy and knit trousers. I've written each one so you can adjust it for your shape and your weather. In early fall keep the layers thin and breathable; as it gets colder, the same outfits take a heavier coat, a scarf or tights without starting over. Neutrals and deep autumn colors both have a place here.

Sorting Your Closet Into Base, Middle and Outer Layers
Every outfit below is built the same way, and once you see it, layering stops being guesswork. I sort a fall wardrobe into three weights and only ever pick one from each.
- Base: thin and close to the body. Cotton tees, fine ribbed turtlenecks, thermals. Merino is worth it if you run cold, since it stays warm without bulk and doesn't hold odor the way synthetics do.
- Middle: where the warmth lives. Cardigans, sweaters, sweater vests, fleece, flannel. This is the layer people overdo, and two thick ones together is usually where an outfit gets lumpy.
- Outer: the layer that blocks wind and rain. Trench, barn jacket, wool coat, quilted jacket. Wool coats are warm but not waterproof; a trench handles drizzle but adds little heat.
The rule I follow is that each layer has to be a little roomier than the one beneath it, especially in the sleeves. If you can't bend your elbow comfortably with all three on, the middle layer is too thick for that coat.
1. Cable Knit Sweater And Straight Leg Jeans Fall Outfit

This is the outfit I'd build first in almost any fall closet. Size the cream cable knit with a little room so a thin cotton tee fits under it; wool straight on skin itches for many people, and the tee also takes the sweat so the sweater needs washing less often. Dark-wash jeans read sharper, medium-wash softer. Brown ankle boots with a low block heel are the walking choice, and a cognac crossbody, small gold hoops and a watch are enough. A bulky knit gets a small front tuck; a slimmer one can hang loose. Plaid scarf for cold, light trench for rain.
2. Oversized Cardigan And Leggings Fall Outfit

Leggings and an oversized cardigan only look put together if the leggings are doing their job. I always reach for black ponte over thin lounge leggings, because ponte holds its shape and doesn't turn shiny or see-through at the knee. Under the cardigan, a long white or charcoal tee covers the seat. The cardigan itself should land around the upper thigh; much shorter and the proportions look unfinished. Ribbed socks with lug-sole ankle boots or supportive leather sneakers, and a roomy tote. Side slits or a slim belt add shape, and fleece-lined leggings with a soft scarf carry it into colder weeks.
3. Turtleneck And Wide Leg Trousers Fall Outfit

Soft tailoring can feel as comfortable as denim if the fabric moves. A fitted ribbed turtleneck gives wide-leg high-waisted trousers in chocolate, charcoal, camel or olive a counterweight; a loose top with a loose trouser just looks like pajamas. Loafers in mild weather, pointed ankle boots when it turns cold. A cropped wool jacket keeps the waistline visible, and a long coat makes it more dramatic. Finish with a structured shoulder bag, quiet earrings and a slim belt. If you're petite, have the hem taken up a touch so it skims the shoe instead of puddling. Thin thermal leggings fit underneath without showing.
4. Plaid Shacket And Black Jeans Fall Outfit

A plaid shacket gives you color and a roomy shirt in one piece. Wear it over a fitted black long-sleeve tee or light mock-neck so the bulk stays on the outside, with black straight jeans as a quiet base. Rust, cream, olive or brown plaids sit easily with neutral accessories: tan ankle boots, a leather backpack, a ribbed beanie. Leave it open with the sleeves pushed up in the afternoon, then button it with a scarf as it cools. A curved shirttail hem moves nicely over the hip. I'd choose a cropped shacket with high-rise jeans if you want your waist to show.
5. Sweater Dress And Knee High Boots Fall Outfit

A sweater dress is warmth in one piece, which is why it's my go-to on mornings with no time to think. The fabric matters more than the color: a ribbed midi or knee-length knit with some body skims, while a thin stretchy one clings and shows every line underneath. Forest green, burgundy, camel and deep navy all feel right for fall. Brown or black knee-high boots in a flat or low heel keep you comfortable all day. A long wool coat polishes it; a belted trench suits in-between weather. A narrow belt is optional, and opaque tights come in as it cools, for the office, lunch or family photos.
6. Quarter Zip Sweater And Barrel Jeans Fall Outfit

Barrel jeans update a sweater outfit, but they punish the wrong top. I pair them with a soft quarter-zip in camel, cream, navy or gray, worn open over a white crewneck or zipped up when it's cold. The jean should curve gently, not balloon; if the knee looks like a lampshade in the mirror, go one shape subtler. Streamlined loafers, suede clogs or slim ankle boots keep the bottom half from looking heavy, and a medium shoulder bag works better than a huge tote. Roll the sleeves and add a watch. A tapered relaxed jean gives a similar feel with less volume.
7. Denim Shirt And Corduroy Pants Fall Outfit

Denim on corduroy is a texture pairing that does the work for you. A medium-wash denim shirt with rust, olive, camel or chocolate cords is the base. A softly fitted shirt tucks neatly into high-waisted trousers; an oversized one works open over a fitted tank. I always add a leather belt here, because that strip of leather is what separates two textured pieces and stops them blurring together. Brown suede loafers or ankle boots, a structured crossbody and small hoops finish it. Black or navy cords tone it down. On chilly mornings, a quilted vest adds warmth without stiffening your arms.
8. Chunky Sweater And Satin Midi Skirt Fall Outfit

A chunky sweater takes the formality out of a satin midi skirt. Choose a relaxed knit in cream, burgundy, charcoal or chocolate with a bias-cut skirt in rust, olive, black or plum. Bias-cut satin moves beautifully but clings when static builds up against wool, so an anti-static slip underneath is something I'd never skip with this pairing. Tuck a small piece of the sweater into the waistband, or belt it underneath to fake a crop. Knee-high boots close the gap under the hem and add warmth. A compact shoulder bag and delicate earrings keep the bulk in check, and a long tailored coat lets the skirt still swing.
9. Puffer Vest And Flannel Shirt Fall Outfit

For a day spent mostly outdoors, a light puffer vest over a soft flannel is hard to beat. Pick the vest color from the plaid: cream, olive, navy or chocolate. Straight jeans or durable utility pants move well without looking like gym wear, and waterproof ankle boots or trail-style sneakers handle parks and markets. A crossbody belt bag keeps your hands free, a knit beanie replaces a heavy coat. Untucked reads relaxed, a front tuck shows your waist. If the afternoon warms, the vest comes off and the sleeves roll up. Thermal socks matter more than you'd think on damp ground.
10. Sweater Vest And Button Down Shirt Fall Outfit

A sweater vest over a button-down looks preppy, and it reads too stiff only when everything is crisp. Start with a white, pale blue or striped shirt and a cable vest in camel, burgundy, navy or forest green. Straight jeans keep it casual; pleated trousers make it work-ready. Loafers with visible crew socks show the layering is deliberate, with a structured tote and studs. Let the shirt hem fall below the vest for a relaxed line, or tuck both into high-rise pants for definition. When it cools, check that your trench or blazer has room for the knit before you rely on it.
11. Long Cardigan And Midi Dress Fall Outfit

Don't pack away every summer dress yet. A long cardigan turns a light midi in rust, navy, olive, burgundy or cream into a fall outfit. I size the cardigan to end a little above or below the dress hem, never exactly at it, because two hems in the same place create a hard line across the leg. Ankle boots for everyday, knee-high for warmth. Belt the dress over the open cardigan if you want shape. A medium crossbody and small pendant finish it, with opaque tights and a light scarf on cold days. It's most useful in early fall, when the morning and afternoon feel like different seasons.
12. Barn Jacket And Relaxed Jeans Fall Outfit

A barn jacket adds structure to the most relaxed basics. Olive, tan, navy or brown, ideally with a corduroy collar, over a striped long-sleeve tee or light crewneck. The jacket is a little boxy, so relaxed straight jeans balance it better than skinnies. Loafers, suede clogs or weather-resistant ankle boots, plus a canvas tote and a patterned neck scarf. For more shape, I'd pick one that ends at the hip rather than a long oversized cut. Turn up the cuffs to show the lining. When it gets colder, a thin quilted vest slides underneath; check the jacket's armholes first, since barn jackets vary a lot there.
13. Hoodie And Trench Coat Fall Outfit

A hoodie under a trench looks intentional, but only with the right hoodie. Choose a streamlined one in heather gray, cream, navy or black; a thick, bulky sweatshirt makes the trench pull across the back and the sleeves bunch. Pull the hood out so it lies over the collar. Straight jeans or tapered knit pants keep the bottom simple, and clean leather sneakers suit errands and travel, with chunky loafers for something sharper. A structured crossbody is what keeps it from reading as gym clothes. Small hoops, a cap or plain beanie. In the cold, add a fitted tee underneath and soft crew socks.
14. Fair Isle Sweater And Dark Jeans Fall Outfit

Fair Isle is busy, so I build everything else around one color pulled from the yoke. Choose a pattern with cream, brown, navy, rust or forest green and pair it with dark straight jeans. Brown suede ankle boots echo the traditional texture, and a small leather shoulder bag keeps it practical. A thin cotton tee underneath stops the wool from scratching and adds warmth. Fair Isle sweaters tend to be boxy, so high-rise jeans and a gentle front tuck help. Pick a solid wool coat in a shade from the pattern, and keep earrings and scarf plain so the knit stays the focus.
15. Wool Blazer And Knit Pants Fall Outfit

Knit pants can look office-ready under a wool blazer, provided the knit is heavy. Thin lounge fabric clings at the thigh and bags at the knee after an hour of sitting, so I look for a substantial weave with a smooth waistband. Wide-leg in black, charcoal, navy or chocolate, with a fitted crewneck or ribbed mock-neck. The blazer needs room in the shoulders to sit flat over the knit. Pointed flats, loafers or low ankle boots, a structured tote and a simple belt. For color, a burgundy or deep green blazer over a cream top and dark trousers is a rich fall mix.
16. Fleece Jacket And Cargo Pants Fall Outfit

Fleece and cargo pants are the outfit for a muddy walk or a long day outdoors. A high-pile or sherpa fleece in cream, tan, sage or blocked neutrals goes over a fitted long-sleeve top, which keeps the sleeves from twisting. Straight or slightly tapered cargos in olive, black or taupe give you pockets without a lot of bulk. Trail sneakers or lug-sole boots grip wet paths. A nylon crossbody, ribbed socks and a beanie finish it. Sherpa sheds a little and flattens where your bag strap rubs, so I'd wear a crossbody on the other side now and then. Cropped cargos suit petite frames.
17. Turtleneck And Denim Midi Skirt Fall Outfit

A denim midi is an easy step away from jeans. Dark or medium wash with a fitted ribbed turtleneck in cream, rust, burgundy or black. The slit is what I check first: a front or side slit lets you walk, but sit down in the fitting room to see how much it opens. Knee-high leather boots give a smooth line under the hem and keep you warm. A cropped jacket or belted cardigan keeps the proportions, and a slim belt and structured bag polish it. Opaque tights add coverage. Curvier figures do well with some stretch in the denim; straighter figures can use a belted high waist.
18. Teddy Coat And Monochrome Knit Outfit

A teddy coat is about as close to wearing a blanket as fall gets. Underneath, I keep a matching knit sweater and pants in one color, black, cream, chocolate or charcoal, because the coat already has all the texture the outfit can hold. The pants need enough structure to keep their shape. Sleek sneakers or ankle boots, depending on how polished you want it, and a crossbody worn under the open coat keeps the front clean. If a full-length teddy feels like too much, a hip-length one with a simple collar is easier to carry off. Small earrings and a beanie, and skip oversized accessories.
19. Poncho And Skinny Jeans Fall Outfit

A poncho keeps your upper body warm and lets your arms move freely. The base matters: a fitted long-sleeve tee or thin turtleneck, because thick sleeves under a poncho bunch at the wrist. Skinny or slim-straight jeans balance the volume, with knee-high or fitted ankle boots in brown, black or taupe. Wear a compact crossbody underneath so it doesn't drag the drape. A solid poncho goes with more; a quiet plaid adds character. For a waist, I'd belt just one side instead of the whole garment, which keeps the swing. Leather gloves cover the bare forearms on cold days.
20. Rugby Shirt And Corduroy Skirt Fall Outfit

A rugby shirt brings sporty color to a corduroy skirt. Navy, cream, forest green, burgundy or mustard stripes over an A-line mini or knee-length cord skirt in brown, tan, rust or olive. Rugby shirts are made of heavy cotton jersey, so a full tuck only works with a high waist; otherwise a loose front tuck sits flatter. Opaque tights add warmth and coverage, with loafers and crew socks for preppy or knee-high boots for cold weather. A small shoulder bag and hoops keep it young without trying too hard. Add a cropped quilted jacket or trench when you need another layer.
21. Leather Jacket And Knit Maxi Skirt Fall Outfit

A leather jacket gives a soft knit maxi something to push against. Start with a fitted crewneck or light sweater in cream, gray or black, then a ribbed maxi in chocolate, burgundy, charcoal or olive. I look for an elastic waist and a back slit; without the slit, a knit maxi shortens your stride. Keep the jacket cropped so the long skirt doesn't swamp you. Ankle boots should disappear under the hem. A structured bag, small hoops and a patterned scarf finish it. Smooth faux leather gives the same contrast. In the cold, fleece-lined tights and a fine wool turtleneck take over from the light top.
22. Quilted Jacket And Wide Leg Jeans Fall Outfit

A quilted jacket is the light insulation I want for days that can't decide what they are. Collarless or lightly structured in olive, cream, rust, navy or a small floral, over a fitted mock-neck for a clean neckline. High-waisted wide-leg jeans balance it. Wide hems drag and fray on the ground, so I pair them with platform sneakers, clogs or heeled ankle boots. Simple crossbody, small gold jewelry. If the jacket is oversized, a moderate wide leg works better than an extreme one, and a slightly cropped jacket shows your waist. On windy days add a thin scarf, but only one pattern if the jacket is printed.
23. Zip Cardigan And Pleated Trousers Fall Outfit

A zip cardigan softens pleated trousers. Camel, navy, cream, gray or burgundy, half-zipped over a fitted tank or crewneck. High-waisted pleated trousers in charcoal, chocolate or black give room through the hip and thigh, and the pleats only lie flat when the trousers fit properly at the waist, so check that before anything else. Loafers or low block-heel boots, a structured tote for work or a smaller bag for weekends. Keep the cardigan at hip length or a bit shorter so it doesn't cover the pleats. A slim belt, watch and earrings finish it, with a long wool coat and light scarf when it drops.
24. Suede Jacket And Bootcut Jeans Fall Outfit

Suede with bootcut denim has an easy vintage feel. A fitted cream turtleneck, ribbed tee or light sweater first, then dark bootcut jeans that sit smooth at the hip and flare gently below the knee. A cropped suede jacket in camel, chocolate or tan keeps the legs long. The hem is the key detail: with pointed ankle boots or heeled clogs, the denim should nearly cover the shoe, so try the jeans on with the boots before hemming. A leather bag and silk scarf add polish. Suede spots and darkens in rain, so treat it with a protector spray before it goes out, or pick faux suede.
25. Long Wool Coat And Matching Sweats Fall Outfit

Matching sweats can look smart under a tailored wool coat, which is my favorite travel-day trick. Choose a set in heather gray, cream, navy or chocolate with small or no logos. Straight-leg sweatpants give a cleaner line than cuffed joggers. A long camel, charcoal or black coat adds the structure, with clean leather sneakers and thick crew socks. Swap a gym bag for a structured tote; that one change does more than any accessory to make the outfit look intentional. Add a cap or beanie. Check that the coat shoulders have room for a heavier sweatshirt or a thermal underneath.
When Two Oversized Pieces Meet
Relaxed shapes are all over this list: barrel jeans, wide-leg trousers, teddy coats, chunky cardigans, ponchos. They're comfortable, but the most common thing I fix in a fitting is an outfit where every piece is loose. The body disappears and the eye has nowhere to rest.
Keep one piece roomy and let the next one follow your shape. A big knit goes with a straight or slim leg; wide trousers want a fitted top or a short jacket. Then find your waist somewhere, with a small tuck, a belt or a cropped hem. If you're petite, the volume should sit up top or down low, not both. If you're tall, you can carry a long coat over wide trousers more easily. Curvier figures usually look best with the fitted piece at the narrowest point, which is often the waist rather than the hip.
Why One Sweater Itches and Another Doesn't
Itch comes from the thickness of the fiber, not wool itself. Coarser wools prickle; fine merino and cashmere feel soft on most skin. Chunky, rustic knits like traditional Fair Isle or some cable knits often use a sturdier yarn, which is exactly why I put a cotton tee under them. Wash knits rarely, in cool water, and dry them flat; heat and agitation shrink wool and can make it feel rougher over time.
Mix These Up Before You Buy Anything New
The outfits that last are the ones built from pieces that turn up in several looks. This list mixes denim, trousers, skirts, dresses, knits and jackets with shoes you can walk in. Start with the combinations closest to your week, then change colors, fabrics and proportions until they feel like yours. Early fall wants light layers; later, coats, tights, scarves and thermals carry the same outfits through. Fit and comfort count for more than any trend. A few soft textures, some neutrals and two or three deep colors will cover most of the season.
