Cosy is easy to get right on the sofa and harder to get right out of the house. The outfits I like most in autumn keep the soft knits, relaxed denim and warm jackets, but give each one a shape so it looks dressed rather than bundled. That usually comes down to three things: one fitted layer somewhere, a waist you can see, and a fabric that does the warming instead of sheer thickness. Below are the combinations I return to, from cardigans and midi skirts to rain-ready layers. Most can be built from what's already in your wardrobe, with a thermal underneath on cold days or lighter cotton in early autumn.

Warmth Comes From the Fabric, Not the Thickness
When a client tells me they're always cold in autumn, I look at the labels before I look at the outfits. A thick sweater isn't always a warm one. Here's how the common fabrics in this list actually behave:
- Wool and merino: warm for their weight and still insulating when slightly damp. A thin merino base layer is the most useful cold-weather piece I know.
- Cotton: comfortable and breathable, but once it absorbs rain or sweat it stays cold. Great for early autumn, weak on a wet November walk.
- Acrylic: soft and cheap, but it traps sweat and pills quickly. Fine for a cardigan, less good next to the skin.
- Fleece: very warm for its weight, but wind goes straight through it.
- Down and synthetic quilting: excellent warmth, best kept as an outer layer.
So my approach is a fine wool or thermal close to the body, a middle layer for texture, and something wind-resistant on the outside. That keeps the outfit slimmer and warmer than one bulky sweater. It also means you can peel off a layer indoors and still look finished, which a single heavy knit never allows. If you only change one thing this autumn, swap a cotton long-sleeve tee for a thin merino one under your usual knits and notice the difference on the first wet day.
1. Chunky Sweater And Jeans Autumn Outfit

A chunky sweater and straight jeans is the outfit people reach for first, and it's the one I fit most carefully. Cable knits add real bulk, so the jean must be straight, not skinny, or the top looks twice its size. A small front tuck shows the waist. Cream, oatmeal, rust or forest green, with brown suede ankle boots and a crossbody. On a cold morning a thin thermal underneath adds more warmth than a thicker sweater would. Petite frames look best in a slightly cropped knit; taller women can carry a properly oversized one.
2. Cardigan And Wide Leg Jeans Autumn Outfit

This is loungewear comfort that still looks like a decision. A fitted white or cream tee tucked into high-rise wide-leg jeans, then a slouchy button-front cardigan in gray, camel, burgundy or chocolate. The tee has to be fitted. A loose tee under a loose cardigan over loose jeans has no shape anywhere. White leather sneakers for an easy day, suede clogs or ankle boots for warmth. A leather shoulder bag and a pendant are enough.
3. Sweater And Midi Skirt Autumn Outfit

For a softer feel, a sweater with a flowing midi skirt is my favorite mix of warm and light. A fine-knit crewneck or a slightly oversized wool sweater over a satin, pleated or printed skirt: camel with leopard, burgundy with cream, charcoal with soft blue. Tuck loosely at the front or use a slim belt. I'd avoid a very heavy knit over a thin satin skirt, because the weight pulls the waistband down as you move. Knee-high boots underneath keep you warm and run in one line. A long wool coat on cold days.
4. Trench Coat And Trousers Autumn Outfit

A trench over a striped sweater and tailored trousers covers a day that starts cold and warms up. Beige trench, a lightweight stripe, black, navy or chocolate trousers in a straight or gently wide cut. Loafers with ribbed socks and a medium tote. If rain is forecast, I check the soles first; thin leather loafers soak through and slip on wet leaves, so a rubber sole or a sleek waterproof boot is the safer swap. Wear the trench open in the afternoon and belt it when the temperature drops.
5. Shacket And Leggings Autumn Outfit

Shacket, turtleneck and leggings is my go-to for a walk or a market morning. A long fitted turtleneck that covers the hips, thick ponte or fleece-lined leggings, and an oversized plaid or wool-blend shacket that falls below the hip. That length matters: a short shacket over leggings leaves the outfit looking unfinished. Chunky lace-up boots with grip balance the roomy layer. Ribbed socks, a crossbody and a beanie if it's cold.
6. Knit Dress And Long Coat Autumn Outfit

A ribbed knit dress is cosy from shoulders to knees. Straight, wrap or gently fitted, in chocolate, deep olive, burgundy or charcoal, under a long camel or gray wool coat that ends close to the dress hem so the two lengths line up. Knee-high leather or suede boots. Ribbed knit shows every line underneath, so I recommend smooth underwear and, on cold days, a thin slip for an extra layer. A belt is optional; this dress hangs well as a column. A soft scarf and plain jewelry.
7. Blazer And Hoodie Autumn Outfit

A hoodie under a blazer works when the hoodie is plain and the blazer fits properly. Gray, cream or navy, no big graphics, under a relaxed plaid or solid blazer, with straight jeans and retro sneakers. Pull the hood out so it sits neatly over the collar. The blazer needs roomy armholes. I try it on over the hoodie before deciding, because a slim-cut blazer bunches at the elbow over sweatshirt fabric. A sleek leather tote and sunglasses make the casual pieces look intentional.
8. Denim Jacket And Corduroy Pants Autumn Outfit

Denim and corduroy are two sturdy cottons that sit together well and give texture without any pattern. A lightweight crewneck in cream, mustard, rust or deep red, high-rise cord trousers in brown, olive, navy or burgundy, and a medium-wash denim jacket. Straight or gently flared both work. Tan ankle boots and a woven belt. I'd keep the jacket a different blue from any denim nearby and leave the cord as the star. A thermal camisole under the knit is enough for colder days.
9. Leather Jacket And Midi Skirt Autumn Outfit

A leather jacket and a fluid midi skirt are a contrast I never tire of. Black, brown or burgundy leather over a fitted long-sleeve knit, with a satin, printed or pleated skirt that moves when you walk. Chunky ankle boots ground it. A cropped jacket defines the waist; a longer, relaxed one feels more laid back. Opaque tights for coverage. Leather is stiff at first and molds to you with wear, so a new jacket will feel boxy over the first few weeks before it settles.
10. Sweater Vest And Shirt Autumn Outfit

Early autumn is when a sweater vest earns its place: warmth through the body, nothing heavy on the arms. A cream, brown or patterned vest over a crisp white or pale blue shirt, with straight jeans so it doesn't tip into office wear. Let the shirt hem peek out, or tuck both. Loafers with ribbed socks. If the vest is roomy, choose a thin poplin shirt; a thick flannel under a loose vest adds bulk around the armholes.
11. Brown Monochrome Autumn Outfit

Head-to-toe brown is warmer than black and kinder to most faces. A chocolate or espresso turtleneck, relaxed caramel or taupe trousers, and a long brown coat. Suede boots continue the line; a cream, burgundy or animal-print bag gives one contrast. I always vary the textures in a tonal outfit, ribbed knit against smooth tailoring, wool against suede, otherwise the browns merge into one flat block. A belt close to the trouser color keeps the line long.
12. Plaid Overshirt And Black Jeans Autumn Outfit

A soft plaid overshirt over a fitted black turtleneck and black straight jeans is a pumpkin-patch and road-trip outfit. Rust, forest green, camel, navy or burgundy plaid. Combat boots and a black crossbody. Leave it open for a relaxed shape, or button the middle and belt it. Many overshirts are thin flannel rather than wool, so I treat them as a mid layer and add a thermal on cold days. Wool-blend versions block wind much better if you'll be outdoors all afternoon.
13. Puffer Vest And Leggings Autumn Outfit

A puffer vest keeps your core warm and your arms free, which is why I like it for active days. A quilted vest in black, olive, cream or burgundy over a sweatshirt or quarter-zip, thick matte black leggings, and retro sneakers or light hiking boots. Matte leggings matter; shiny ones look like gym wear. Hip-length is classic, longer is warmer. Keep the sweatshirt and leggings in similar colors so the outfit reads as one piece. A belt bag across the body.
14. Barn Jacket And Cable Knit Autumn Outfit

Barn jackets are built for weather and look better the more they're worn. Olive, tan, navy or dark brown over a cream cable knit, straight blue jeans and brown leather ankle boots. A checked scarf and canvas tote. The cut is roomy, but the canvas has no stretch, so I'd choose a medium-weight cable over a very chunky one or the sleeves get tight. Roll the jeans once to show a little ribbed sock above the boot.
15. Long Cardigan And Tailored Trousers Autumn Outfit

A knee-length cardigan over tailored trousers gives you knitwear comfort with a cleaner line. A fitted turtleneck or crewneck underneath, straight or gently wide trousers, and the long cardigan in oatmeal, camel, charcoal or deep green. Worn open, it creates a strong vertical line; a slim belt adds shape. Pointed flats or loafers. Long cardigans stretch at the shoulders if hung, so I fold them. Trousers should skim the shoe rather than pool around it.
16. Sweatshirt And Satin Skirt Autumn Outfit

A plain sweatshirt with a satin skirt is the most comfortable dressed-up outfit I know. Gray, navy, burgundy or cream crewneck over a bias-cut skirt in chocolate, black, olive or champagne. Bias-cut satin flares as you walk, so it needs the top to be controlled: tuck it slightly or fold the hem under. Retro sneakers by day, ankle boots for dinner. Add a fitted layer underneath and a trench when it cools. Static is the satin's weak point under fleece, and an anti-static spray solves it.
17. Utility Jacket And Knit Dress Autumn Outfit

A utility jacket makes a soft knit dress feel everyday. A ribbed dress in black, oatmeal, rust or chocolate under an olive, khaki or navy jacket that ends at the waist or high hip. Longer jackets cut the dress in half. Flat ankle boots and a crossbody. Roll the sleeves to show the knit cuffs. A drawstring waist on the jacket lets you add shape without a belt. A dress with a little stretch moves and sits more comfortably.
18. Camel Coat And Jeans Autumn Outfit

A camel coat with jeans is the most dependable outfit in this list, and fit is everything. A fitted turtleneck in black, cream or burgundy, medium or dark straight jeans, black loafers or ankle boots. The coat should fall between the knee and mid-calf; petite women often look best just at or above the knee. When buying one, I put it on over my thickest sweater and check the sleeve still covers the wrist when I reach forward. Turn up the collar and add a checked scarf on windy days.
19. Cropped Cardigan And Maxi Skirt Autumn Outfit

A cropped cardigan and a maxi skirt balance each other: short above, long below. The cardigan should meet the skirt waistband, so there's no gap and no extra fabric around the middle. Cream, berry, rust or forest green over a floral, checked or plain flowing skirt. Knee-high boots underneath for hidden warmth. Button it fully as a top or wear it over a thin camisole. Because you choose where the waist sits, it suits many body types.
20. Fleece Jacket And Cargo Pants Autumn Outfit

Fleece and cargo pants are for a day with real movement in it. A fitted long-sleeve tee or thermal, straight cargo pants in black, olive, stone or brown, and a zip fleece in cream, camel or forest green. Trail sneakers, or light hiking boots for wet ground. Fleece is warm for its weight but lets wind straight through, so on exposed walks I'd carry a thin shell to pull over it. Keep the cargos streamlined so the pockets and fleece don't pile on bulk.
21. Quilted Jacket And Straight Jeans Autumn Outfit

A quilted jacket covers the mild, changeable middle of autumn. Olive, navy, black or cream over a striped long-sleeve tee or fine knit, straight jeans and brown Chelsea boots. A patterned scarf and a leather crossbody. Side vents or a curved hem give movement at the hip. When it gets colder, I add a thin thermal under the stripe instead of a thicker sweater, which keeps the jacket from feeling tight.
22. Poncho And Leggings Autumn Outfit

A poncho is warm and dramatic without any layering puzzle. Wear it over a fitted turtleneck with thick leggings or slim ponte pants, because a full top needs a narrow bottom. Knee-high boots continue the long line. Camel, gray, burgundy or a subtle plaid. A structured bag keeps it from looking too relaxed. Ponchos widen the shoulders, so petite women should choose one ending above mid-thigh. They also make crossbody bags awkward, so carry the bag in hand.
23. Matching Knit Set Autumn Outfit

A matching knit set takes almost no thought in the morning. A ribbed sweater with wide-leg pants, or a cardigan with a knitted midi skirt, in oatmeal, taupe, charcoal, chocolate, burgundy or deep green. A long wool coat, clean leather sneakers and a structured tote give the soft pieces some edge. Heavy knit trousers stretch and drop a little through the day, so I hem them slightly shorter than woven trousers. Each piece also works alone with denim or tailoring.
24. Wool Coat And Oversized Scarf Autumn Outfit

On a windy morning, a big scarf does more for warmth than another layer. A fine-knit sweater and relaxed trousers in matching neutrals, a long camel, charcoal, navy or brown wool coat, and a large checked or solid scarf wrapped high. Leather ankle boots and a structured tote. Straight or gently wide trousers balance the long coat. If the scarf is bright or strongly patterned, everything else stays plain. Wool scarves can itch, so I suggest a lambswool or cashmere blend if your neck is sensitive.
25. Raincoat And Waterproof Boots Autumn Outfit

A good raincoat means you don't have to give up the outfit. A lightweight waterproof coat in olive, navy, tan, burgundy or bright yellow over a crewneck sweater and straight jeans, with waterproof Chelsea boots. Cuff the jeans just above the boot so wet hems don't drag. I look for taped seams and a hood that adjusts at the back; without them, water finds its way in at the shoulders. A crossbody that fits under the coat stays dry.
Keeping Knits From Pilling, Stretching and Shrinking
Almost every outfit here leans on knitwear, and knits wear out faster than woven clothes if they're treated the same way. The habits I teach clients:
- Fold knits; don't hang them. Hangers stretch the shoulders out of shape within weeks.
- Let a sweater rest a day between wears so the fibers recover.
- Wash wool cold, by hand or on a wool cycle, and never wring it. Press water out in a towel and dry it flat.
- Remove pills with a sweater comb or fabric shaver. They form where the knit rubs: under the arms, at the cuffs, and where a bag strap sits.
- Expect pilling on loosely spun or blended yarns. It's normal, not a fault, and smoother, tighter knits do it less.
A few minutes of care keeps a good sweater looking new for many winters, which matters more than buying a new one each season.
Warm Layers You Can Wear Out the Door
An autumn wardrobe comes together faster from a few outfit formulas than from a pile of seasonal buys. Start with jeans, turtlenecks, cardigans, trousers and boots you already own, then add texture or color through one layer: cream, camel, burgundy, olive or chocolate mix easily, but your own favorite shades work too. Choose fabrics and proportions that suit your actual day. The goal is an outfit that keeps you warm and still looks like you chose it.
