Fall is the season most men actually enjoy getting dressed for, because layers finally have a job to do. A cold morning, a mild afternoon and a sharp evening all in one day means a jacket, a knit and a base layer that each look right on their own. Practical outerwear, denim jackets, textured knits and relaxed trousers are what I keep coming back to, mostly in olive, navy, brown, charcoal and cream, since those colors all work with each other. The outfits below run from workwear and clean minimal looks to preppy and sporty ones. For each, I've noted the fit point that decides whether it works and where it tends to go wrong.

Buy Fall Jackets With the Sweater You'll Wear Under Them
Most of the outfits below are two or three layers, and the most common fit problem I see is a jacket bought in September over a T-shirt that won't close over a sweater by November. Take the knit you actually plan to wear when you try anything on.
- Shoulder seam: it should sit at the edge of your shoulder bone. Too far in pulls; too far out looks oversized.
- Arm reach: stretch both arms forward like you're driving. If the back pulls tight or the sleeves ride up past the wrist bone, size up or try a different cut.
- Sleeve length: with arms down, the jacket sleeve should cover the sweater cuff, or show just a small bit of it.
- Hem: field jackets, bombers and overshirts look best ending around the hip; topcoats and trenches near the knee.
The same goes for knits under jackets. Fine merino and cotton knits slide under almost anything. Chunky wool and fleece belong under roomy coats or on their own. If a sweater makes the jacket sleeve feel tight at the bicep, that pairing won't be comfortable for a full day.
1. Men’s Flannel Shirt Fall Outfit

A plaid flannel over a heavyweight tee is the first fall outfit most men own, and it's still a good one. White or heather gray underneath, dark straight-leg jeans, brown leather service boots. The fit check is the shoulder: the seam should land at the edge of your shoulder, not halfway down the arm, or the shirt looks borrowed. Roll the sleeves on a warm afternoon and button up when it cools. A brown belt, field watch and canvas backpack are enough. Red, forest green, navy or muted mustard plaid all sit well with dark denim. Brushed flannel does pill at the elbows over time, which is normal wear.
2. Men’s Denim Jacket And Hoodie Fall Outfit

A denim jacket over a light gray hoodie handles weather that can't make up its mind. The hood adds warmth and contrast, and the stiff jacket keeps it from looking like gym clothes. Tapered olive chinos or canvas pants bring a fall color that doesn't fight the blue. White leather sneakers, or gray suede ones. The hoodie must be thin. Denim jackets are cut close in the arm, and a thick fleece hoodie will bunch at the shoulders and stop you lifting your arms. A dark beanie and a crossbody bag finish it.
3. Men’s Field Jacket And Henley Fall Outfit

An olive field jacket over a cream or oatmeal henley is about as reliable as casual fall gets. Leave the top button or two open. Raw or dark indigo jeans give enough contrast that the earth tones don't blur. Brown moc-toe boots, a leather belt and a canvas-strap watch. I size field jackets with a thin sweater on, since that's how you'll wear them in October; the hem should end around the hips. When it warms up, carry the jacket and the henley holds up alone. It looks practical without tipping into costume.
4. Men’s Overshirt And Wool Trousers Fall Outfit

A wool-blend overshirt is my answer when jeans feel too casual and a blazer feels like too much. A plain black, white or cream crewneck underneath, a camel, charcoal or dark green overshirt on top, and relaxed gray wool trousers. Minimal leather sneakers keep it easy; suede loafers sharpen it. The trouser hem is the detail I'd fix first. A little break over the shoe is fine, but anything stacking at the ankle looks sloppy with a relaxed cut, and a tailor can shorten it in one visit. A silver watch and a small messenger bag. Good for a creative office or a city weekend.
5. Men’s Bomber Jacket And Black Jeans Fall Outfit

A bomber sharpens weekend clothes without dressing them up. Matte nylon or cotton in navy, olive, brown or deep burgundy over a fitted crewneck sweatshirt, with black straight-leg jeans. Low black-and-white sneakers or brown suede boots. The ribbed hem should sit at the waist, and the chest should close without pulling. Shiny satin, lots of patches and bulky pockets date a bomber fast, so I keep them plain. A black watch and a plain cap. Fine for travel or casual plans.
6. Men’s Cardigan And Chinos Fall Outfit

A cardigan over an oxford shirt is a softer take on a jacket and tie. Medium-weight navy, brown or charcoal over a white oxford with the collar open, tan chinos and dark brown suede loafers or chukkas. Swap the oxford for a heavyweight tee and leather sneakers for a casual version. The cardigan should follow the body without pulling at the buttons; if you see horizontal creases across the front, size up. Keep chinos straight or lightly tapered. A woven belt and leather-strap watch. Good at work, at brunch or with family.
7. Men’s Chore Coat And Striped Shirt Fall Outfit

A chore coat adds depth to a striped shirt and jeans. Navy, olive, tan or faded blue cotton canvas with patch pockets, over a Breton stripe in cream and navy or cream and black. Relaxed mid-wash jeans keep it from looking too matched. Gum-sole sneakers, canvas high-tops or brown boots. Chore coats are cut boxy for movement, but the shoulders should still sit right. Canvas starts stiff and softens with wear and washing, and it fades along the seams over time, which most people like. A beanie and tote when needed.
8. Men’s Leather Jacket And Sweater Fall Outfit

A leather jacket with a soft sweater and plain denim is easier to wear than leather with a tee. A black or dark brown cafe racer over a light charcoal, cream or burgundy crewneck, with dark straight jeans and leather or suede Chelsea boots. The sweater has to be thin, merino or cotton, because a leather jacket has almost no give in the arms. A leather belt and plain metal watch. I'd keep distressed jeans away from a heavily detailed jacket; with leather, cleaner pieces look current. Good for cool evenings and city walks.
9. Men’s Quarter-Zip And Corduroy Pants Fall Outfit

A quarter-zip with corduroy is comfortable and neat. Navy, forest green, camel or heather gray, with a plain white tee underneath and the zip partly open so it shows. Brown, tan or deep olive cords give more character than chinos. Off-white suede sneakers or casual leather boots. Narrow cords tend to look dated and bag at the knee, so I'd go slightly relaxed. Medium wale is the easiest to wear; very wide wale adds bulk. A canvas backpack or plain watch. Good for campus, a remote workday or errands.
10. Men’s Puffer Vest And Flannel Fall Outfit

A puffer vest keeps your core warm and leaves your arms free, which is why it works for a tailgate or a long walk. Navy, charcoal or olive over a brushed plaid flannel, with slim-straight khakis or sturdy five-pocket pants. Trail sneakers or waterproof suede boots. The vest should end near the waistband and zip without pulling. Down loses its warmth when soaked, so in steady rain a synthetic fill is the safer choice. Flannel untucked for casual, tucked with a belt for neater. A cap and small backpack.
11. Men’s Rugby Shirt And Field Jacket Fall Outfit

A rugby shirt adds color and a little prep to practical fall layers. A substantial cotton one in navy, burgundy, forest green or cream under an olive or tan field jacket, with brown cords and suede chukkas. Let the collar fall as it wants rather than arranging it. Rugby shirts are heavy, so the jacket needs room for them; check that it still closes without straining. A canvas belt and simple watch. It suits a campus, a lunch or an afternoon outside.
12. Men’s Suede Jacket And Merino Sweater Fall Outfit

Suede gives an outfit seasonal richness with no pattern needed. A tobacco, tan or dark brown suede jacket over a fine cream or charcoal merino, with dark navy trousers or clean black jeans. White leather sneakers for a modern finish, dark brown Chelsea boots for more polish. Treat the suede with a protector spray before the first wear, and keep crossbody straps off it, as constant rubbing leaves a shiny patch. If it does get soaked, let it dry naturally away from heat and brush the nap back up. A minimal watch and matching belt.
13. Men’s Hoodie And Topcoat Fall Outfit

A hoodie under a wool topcoat mixes casual and tailored in a way that works for commuting. A plain gray, black or oatmeal hoodie with little or no branding, under a camel, charcoal or navy wool-blend coat. Straight dark jeans and clean leather sneakers. The coat needs room in the shoulders; try it on with the hoodie, and if the lapels gape or the back pulls when you reach forward, it's too tight. Lay the hood flat outside the collar. A knit cap and a crossbody or backpack. Warm without looking like outdoor gear.
14. Men’s Plaid Overshirt And Turtleneck Fall Outfit

A turtleneck under a plaid overshirt is warm and looks sharper than a tee. A fine-knit black, cream or charcoal turtleneck under a heavier overshirt in muted brown, olive, navy or rust plaid. Relaxed wool trousers or dark chinos keep it from going too outdoorsy. Suede Chelsea boots or minimal leather sneakers. The turtleneck should fit close but not grip the neck; fine merino folds down neatly where a thick knit stands up. Make sure the overshirt has space in the arms. A leather tote or small messenger bag.
15. Men’s Shawl Cardigan And Henley Fall Outfit

A shawl collar adds bulk at the chest and neck, so a shawl cardigan makes a plain henley look much warmer. Chunky oatmeal, charcoal, navy or dark brown over a neutral long-sleeve henley, with dark indigo jeans and brown lace-up boots. Wear it open or fasten a button or two when it's cold. The knit already does a lot, so leave distressed denim and big accessories out. Chunky knits stretch on hangers, so fold this one. A leather belt, field watch and canvas bag. Good for a weekend away or a slow afternoon.
16. Men’s Rain Jacket And Cargo Pants Fall Outfit

On wet days the shell does the work, and everything else just needs to look tidy. A slim waterproof jacket in navy, olive, stone or black over a knit polo or light crewneck, with straight or slightly tapered cargos in charcoal, khaki or dark green. Waterproof sneakers or hiking-style shoes with real grip. Flat, low-profile pockets keep the cargos city-appropriate. The jacket should leave room for a layer and end around the hip. Waterproof coatings wear off over time, so if water starts soaking in rather than beading, a wash-in reproofer brings it back.
17. Men’s Denim-On-Denim Fall Outfit

Double denim works when the two washes are clearly different. A mid or light-wash trucker jacket over a cream heavyweight tee, with dark indigo or black straight jeans. Brown suede boots or off-white leather sneakers soften all that denim. On colder days, add a gray hoodie or thin flannel under the jacket. Keep the jeans free of heavy fading and rips. A brown belt and canvas tote. I'd avoid a jacket and jeans that are nearly the same shade; it reads as a mistake rather than a choice.
18. Men’s Fleece Jacket And Fatigue Pants Fall Outfit

A zip fleece gives you the outdoorsy feel without a full hiking kit. Cream, forest green, brown or navy over a thermal shirt, with olive fatigue pants or relaxed canvas trousers. Trail sneakers, suede hiking shoes or sturdy leather boots. A roomy fleece wants pants that are relaxed but not very wide, or the whole outfit goes shapeless. A contrasting chest pocket adds a little interest. Fleece pills where a backpack strap rubs, so expect some bobbling at the shoulders over a season. A ribbed beanie and small backpack.
19. Men’s Utility Vest And Sweatshirt Fall Outfit

A utility vest gives a sweatshirt some shape and a few useful pockets. A light olive, tan or navy vest over a heather-gray or cream crewneck sweatshirt, with relaxed dark jeans and neutral retro sneakers. Look for clean pockets and a plain zip rather than tactical straps. The sweatshirt hem shouldn't hang far below the vest; if it does, the proportions look off, so a shorter sweatshirt or a slightly longer vest helps. A canvas cap and small crossbody only if you need them.
20. Men’s Blazer And T-Shirt Fall Outfit

An unstructured blazer smartens up jeans and a tee without making them formal. Navy, brown, charcoal or a quiet check in brushed cotton or wool, over a heavyweight white or black crewneck, with clean dark jeans. Suede loafers, minimal sneakers or brown derbies, depending on where you're going. Unstructured means little or no shoulder padding, so the jacket follows your own shoulder; that's what keeps it relaxed. The tee needs a sturdy neckband that lies flat under the lapels, as a stretched-out collar ruins it. A leather belt and simple watch.
21. Men’s Varsity Jacket And Corduroy Pants Fall Outfit

A varsity jacket looks more grown-up with quiet colors and textured trousers. Navy, forest green, burgundy or black, with small logos and simple trim, over a white oxford or plain crewneck. Tan or dark brown cords keep it away from athletic wear. Clean leather sneakers or suede boots. Straight-leg cords, not skinny. The jacket should end close to the waistband; a varsity that's too long looks like it belongs to someone else. A plain cap and canvas backpack. Good for a game, travel or meeting friends.
22. Men’s Trench Coat And Jeans Fall Outfit

A lightweight trench makes a sweater and jeans look deliberate, and keeps the rain off. Tan, olive, navy or charcoal falling around the knee, over a gray, cream or dark green crewneck, with straight dark jeans. Brown derbies, suede boots or clean leather sneakers. Wear it open, or tie the belt loosely in wind and rain. Buy it with a sweater on: a trench that fits over a shirt will pull across the shoulders by November. A structured backpack or leather tote for commuting.
23. Men’s Quilted Jacket And Chambray Shirt Fall Outfit

A quilted jacket is light insulation with a clean shape, best in mild fall weather. Dark green, navy, brown or black over a light blue chambray shirt, with tan chinos and dark brown boots. Untucked for the weekend; tucked with a leather belt for a casual office. It should fit close enough to keep its shape but let you move your arms freely. Small diamond quilting looks neater than wide channels. Most quilted jackets are warm but not waterproof, so they're better on dry days or under an umbrella. A wool cap or canvas backpack.
24. Men’s Knit Polo And Pleated Trousers Fall Outfit

A long-sleeve knit polo has more texture than a shirt and is just as comfortable. Chocolate, navy, cream, rust or forest green, with relaxed pleated trousers in charcoal, taupe or dark olive. Suede loafers or minimal leather sneakers keep it from turning formal. Leave it out if it ends at the waistband, or tuck it into higher-rise trousers. Skip a visible undershirt at the open collar; it breaks the line. Pleats need a little room: if they pull open when you stand, the trousers are too tight at the hip. A leather belt and plain watch.
25. Men’s Monochrome Charcoal Fall Outfit

All-charcoal works because of the small changes in shade and fabric. A mid-gray crewneck, charcoal straight jeans or wool-blend trousers, and a darker charcoal overshirt or short jacket over the sweater. Black leather boots for a strong finish; gray suede sneakers to soften it. Slight mismatches in tone help, because pieces in identical gray look flat. Brushed wool, denim, suede and ribbed knit give it depth. A black belt, silver watch and dark messenger bag. Good for travel, a casual office or everyday wear if you like a pared-back look.
Canvas, Suede, Waxed Cotton and Nylon in a Fall Downpour
Several jackets and shoes in this list react very differently to rain, and knowing which is which saves you from ruining something good.
- Cotton canvas (chore coats, field jackets): handles drizzle, soaks through in steady rain and takes a while to dry.
- Waxed cotton: sheds rain well, but the wax wears off at the elbows and seams and needs re-waxing every season or two.
- Suede: darkens and can stain in rain. A protector spray helps, but I still leave suede at home when heavy rain is forecast.
- Smooth leather: copes with rain if conditioned. Dry it slowly away from heaters, or it cracks.
- Nylon shells and quilted jackets: light and quick-drying; the outer coating keeps water off until it wears down.
Boots follow the same rules. Leather service boots and Chelsea boots with rubber soles are the safest choice for wet leaves and slick sidewalks. Leather soles look sharp but slip on wet stone. After a soaking, stuff leather boots with newspaper, let them dry at room temperature, then condition them before the next wear.
Two Jackets and Three Knits Cover Most of the Season
A fall wardrobe is easiest to live with when every piece works in several outfits. Start with good jeans, chinos, a pair of relaxed trousers, plain tees, a few knits and one or two jackets you trust. Then add character with flannel, corduroy, suede, quilting and earthy colors. Fit matters more than the size of the closet: shoulders that sit right, clean hems and room to layer. Shoes and accessories should back up the outfit, not compete with it. The outfits here cover rugged, sporty, minimal, preppy and smart casual, so treat them as formulas and adjust the colors and layers to your own taste and weather.
