Sizing for a Body That Changes Week to Week
The most common problem I see isn't the wrong color. It's an outfit bought weeks earlier that no longer fits on the day. In the first months after birth your belly, bust and hips can change from one week to the next, and breasts can swing a full cup size between feeds.
- Try everything on no more than a few days before the session, and sit, kneel and lift something heavy in it.
- Choose stretch, wraps, ties and smocking over fixed waists and fitted bodices.
- Wear the nursing bra you'll use on the day for the try-on. A different bra changes how every top hangs.
- If you had a C-section, check where each waistband sits against the scar. High and soft, or low and loose, both work; a seam pressing right on it doesn't.
If you're between sizes, go up. A slightly loose dress photographs as relaxed. A tight one pulls across the middle in every seated frame, and you'll notice it in the photos even if nobody else does.
1. Postpartum Outfit Ideas for Photos

Postpartum photos ask a lot of an outfit. You might be planning a newborn session, a motherhood portrait, or just a few frames at home before these weeks blur together. Either way, your clothes have to handle a body that's still healing, a baby who may need to feed mid-shoot, and the camera all at once. When I style a new mom, I look for three things before color: a waistband that doesn't press on the belly, easy feeding access, and fabric that won't crease badly when she sits on the floor. The 20 outfits below each meet those checks, with notes on how they'll behave in front of the lens.
1. Cream Linen Maxi Dress Postpartum Photoshoot

A cream linen maxi is my first suggestion for an outdoor session in warm weather. Choose an empire waist or a loose A-line so the fabric falls from the bust and skims the middle instead of catching on it. Long linen moves well in a breeze, which gives the photographer something to work with. It also creases quickly, so I'd steam it on the morning of the shoot and accept a few soft wrinkles once you've sat down; they read as natural in photos. Bare feet or flat nude sandals, small gold hoops, nothing more. Cream reflects light back up onto your face, which helps on tired days.
2. Oversized Knit Sweater and High-Waisted Leggings

For a home session or a cool morning outside, a chunky knit over high-waisted leggings is about as comfortable as photo clothes get. The sweater covers the belly and the high rise gives gentle support where you're still tender. Tuck only the front loosely, or the bulk of the knit sits awkwardly at the waistband. Oatmeal, taupe or soft gray keep the attention on you and the baby. One thing I check: chunky knits shed fibers onto dark baby clothes and blankets, so pair this with a light-colored swaddle. Clean white sneakers finish it.
3. Wrap Dress for New Mom Photos

Of everything here, the wrap dress is my ultimate postpartum photo hero. The tie lets you adjust the fit to wherever your body is that week, and the V-neck frames your face and collarbone. Pick a midi in jersey or brushed cotton; both stretch with you and don't crease much when you shift the baby from arm to arm. If you're nursing, a wrap opens easily for a feed between setups. Before the shoot, sit down and lean forward in it: a wrap that gapes at the chest when you bend will do the same on camera, and a small safety pin inside fixes it. Dusty mauve, sage or blush, with ballet flats or low block-heel sandals.
4. Neutral Two-Piece Lounge Set for Postpartum Shoot

A matching lounge set saves you a decision on a morning when you probably slept three hours. A ribbed two-piece in cream, beige or soft mocha, a relaxed pullover and wide-leg trousers with an elastic waist, is soft against a healing belly and looks deliberate in photos because the colors match. Ribbed knit can stretch out at the knees after you've been sitting, so I'd stand for the first shots and save the floor poses for later. Fuzzy slides at home, white sneakers outside, hair in a loose bun.
5. Button-Down Shirt and Relaxed Denim Postpartum Outfit

A crisp white button-down with relaxed, high-waisted jeans is classic for a reason, and it photographs cleanly in natural light. Buttons give you nursing-friendly functionality without undressing, and a slightly oversized cut drapes over the middle. Tuck just the front and roll the sleeves. The catch is the jeans: stiff denim pressing on a healing belly is miserable during a long session, so look for a pair with some stretch and a wide, soft waistband. Neutral ankle boots or white sneakers and a simple pendant.
6. Off-the-Shoulder Knit Top and Wide-Leg Trousers

An off-the-shoulder knit with wide-leg trousers feels a little romantic while staying easy to move in. The bare shoulder pulls the eye up to your face, and a soft knit stretches over a changing body. Ivory or dusty rose on top, cream or taupe trousers with an elastic waist below. My one warning: off-the-shoulder tops slide up every time you lift a baby, so choose one with a firm elastic band or you'll spend the session tugging it down. Pointed flats or low mules and hair left loose.
7. Soft Cardigan Layered Over a Nursing Tank and Leggings

Layering solves a lot of postpartum problems, and this nursing tank, high-waisted leggings and long open cardigan combination is one you'll wear long after the shoot. The tank gives fast feeding access, the leggings support you, and the cardigan adds movement and texture to the frame. Keep it tonal: a cream tank, oatmeal cardigan, soft gray leggings. I like a cardigan that reaches mid-thigh, because it covers the hips when you're sitting and still swings when you walk. Shearling slippers indoors, ankle boots outside.
8. Ribbed Knit Lounge Set with Sneakers

A ribbed lounge set reads as polished on camera even though it feels like pajamas. Try a fitted long-sleeve ribbed top with matching drawstring joggers in mocha or sage. Ribbing catches window light and gives the fabric shadow and depth, which plain jersey doesn't. A fitted top can feel exposing on a soft belly, so if that bothers you, size up one and let it sit a little looser. White sneakers. This is the set I'd pick for a home session on the sofa or in the nursery.
9. Blush Pink Maxi Dress for Motherhood Portraits

Blush pink is one of the few colors that flatters almost every skin tone, and in postpartum portraits it adds warmth to tired skin. Look for a maxi with a smocked bodice or empire waist so the middle has room and the bust still has shape. Smocking also stretches as your milk comes in and out, which matters more than people expect. Long sleeves for cooler days, flutter sleeves for summer. Bare feet or barely-there sandals, and maybe one flower tucked behind your ear.
10. Nursing Tank and Flowy Kimono with Biker Shorts

This one is for warm days and moms who live in athletic wear. A supportive nursing tank in black or white, high-waisted biker shorts that hold you in without digging, and a light kimono in a soft print or plain neutral. The kimono moves when you walk and also helps with covering your belly if that's where you feel exposed. After a C-section, I'd check that the shorts' waistband sits above the scar rather than right on it before committing. Slides or white sneakers, and you can feed in seconds.
11. Relaxed Chambray Shirt and Distressed Denim

A soft chambray shirt worn open over a plain tank, with relaxed, distressed jeans, is casual without looking careless. Chambray breathes and layers well when an outdoor shoot runs from cool morning to warm noon. Roll the sleeves, leave a few buttons open, and tuck the front loosely. Keep the distressing modest; big knee rips show up large in seated shots and pull attention from the baby. Ankle boots or slip-on sneakers and a short layered necklace.
12. Oversized Blazer with Basic Tee and Faux Leather Leggings

When you want to look sharper than you feel, throw an oversized blazer over a white or gray tee with faux leather leggings. The blazer's structure gives you shoulders and a long line, and the leggings stretch with you. Camel, black or houndstooth all work. This suits a studio or a city backdrop with clean walls. Faux leather can shine hard under flash, so mention it to your photographer; a matte pair is safer. White sneakers keep it casual, pointed flats dress it up.
13. Flowy Floral Maxi Dress Postpartum Photoshoot

A floral maxi adds warmth and movement, especially outdoors. Keep the print small and earthy, dusty mauve, olive and cream, because large, bright florals take over a frame and compete with the baby's face. A tiered or ruffled hem catches the wind, and An empire waist with a smocked back gives you room to breathe. If your partner and older kids are in the shot, pull their colors from the print rather than matching it. Bare feet in grass or strappy sandals.
14. White Button-Down Shirt Dress Postpartum Outfit

A white shirt dress is crisp and simple, and the button front makes feeding easy. A relaxed, slightly oversized cut skims the belly. Roll the sleeves and leave the bottom few buttons open so you can sit and kneel without the skirt pulling tight. A loose braided belt adds a waist if you want one; skip it if anything around the middle still feels sore. Tan sandals or white sneakers. It works as well for a lifestyle newborn session at home as it does outside. White does show spit-up instantly, so keep a burp cloth on hand.
15. Chunky Sweater with Flare Jeans and Heeled Boots

For a cold-weather session, a chunky sweater with high-waisted flare jeans and heeled ankle boots looks put together without much effort. The sweater covers you and keeps you warm between shots, and the flare balances the volume on top so you don't look swamped. Front-tuck only. Cream, camel or charcoal with mid-wash denim. A low, stable heel helps posture in standing shots, but if your pelvic floor or back is still recovering, flat boots are the honest choice; nobody will notice in the photos.
16. Black Jumpsuit for Postpartum Photos

A black jumpsuit is sleek and more practical than it looks. Choose a wrap or surplice neckline for feeding access and an elastic or drawstring waist you can adjust. One piece means no tucking, and black hides spit-up and leaks. The trade-off: you have to undress almost fully to use the bathroom, which is a real consideration in the early weeks, so a jumpsuit with a front zip or a deep wrap is worth hunting for. Long sleeves, an ankle-length hem, block-heel sandals or pointed flats. It suits a white studio backdrop especially well.
17. Striped Oversized Shirt and Wide-Leg White Pants

An oversized blue-and-white striped shirt with wide white trousers feels fresh and summery. The loose shirt opens for feeding and hides nothing you want hidden, and white trousers keep the frame clean. Roll the sleeves and leave a few buttons open. I'd pick a medium stripe; very fine, tight stripes can shimmer oddly in digital photos. Tan flat sandals or espadrilles. It's a natural fit for a beach or park session, and partners in light neutrals or soft blue fit in without effort.
18. Cozy Hoodie and Biker Shorts Casual Postpartum Look

Some of the most honest postpartum photos come from wearing what you actually live in, and for a lot of new moms that's a hoodie and biker shorts. Heather gray, cream or sage, over supportive high-waisted shorts. The loose top and fitted bottom balance each other. Hoodie strings and the front pocket bunch when you hold the baby high, so I'd pull the strings out or tuck them inside before the session. Chunky socks and slides at home, sneakers outside. Messy bun, minimal makeup.
19. Navy Flutter-Sleeve Midi Dress Postpartum Photoshoot

A navy flutter-sleeve midi is polished and still light enough to move in. Navy is softer than black on camera and works in any season. Flutter sleeves don't restrict your arms, which matters when you're lifting and rocking a baby for an hour. An empire waist with light gathering through the bodice gives room through the middle. A calf-length hem covers you when you sit on the floor and still shows the shoes. Nude block heels or ballet flats. It works indoors or in a garden.
20. Monochrome Neutral Coordinated Set with Sneakers
Dressing in one neutral from top to bottom is the simplest way to look intentional when you have no energy for outfit decisions. A cream knit with matching cream trousers, or a beige tee with beige joggers. One color makes you look longer and keeps the frame calm. The thing to watch is undertone: a yellow-cream top next to a pink-cream trouser looks mismatched on camera even if it looks fine in the mirror, so I lay the pieces side by side in daylight first. White sneakers and a fine gold bracelet.
What Goes in the Bag for Feeds, Leaks and Spit-Up
Newborn sessions tend to run long, because babies set the pace. Plan for at least one feed, a diaper change and a mess, and pack for it so nothing ruins your outfit halfway through.
For You
Fresh nursing pads, and a spare top in the same color family as your main outfit, so a quick change doesn't break the look of the gallery. Leaks show most on light, thin fabrics and on silk, which marks with water, so if you're leaking a lot, a printed or textured fabric is more forgiving than plain cream.
For the Baby
A plain burp cloth or muslin in a neutral that matches your palette. If it ends up in a shot, it looks like part of the styling rather than a stray towel. Bring a spare plain outfit or wrap for the baby too.
For Comfort
Water, a snack, and a cushion if you'll be sitting on a floor or in grass. Being tired and hungry shows up in your face faster than any outfit choice, and a short break mid-session usually gives the best photos of the day.
Wear What Lets You Hold the Baby
Your body has just done something huge, and the clothes for these photos should make the day easier, not harder. A maxi dress, a lounge set or a button-down with soft denim can all work, as long as you can feed, lift and sit on the floor without thinking about your waistband. Keep the colors soft so they reflect light onto your face, choose fabrics that breathe, and do one full try-on, sitting and bending, a few days ahead. You don't need to wait until you feel ready. These weeks pass fast, and photos of them as they really were are the ones people treasure.
