Denim shorts don't have to go into storage the week the air turns crisp. I keep a pair of longer jorts in rotation well into October, because a knee-grazing hem behaves more like a cropped trouser than a beach short once you put a jacket and a closed shoe with it. The cuts that carry over best are Bermuda lengths, relaxed straight legs, dark washes and black denim. Below are twenty outfits I'd actually put together, from tailored to sporty to a little rough around the edges, with notes on proportion and on what to add when the afternoon warmth disappears.

Where a Jort Hem Should Land on Your Leg
Length is the first thing I check, because it decides whether jorts look like fall clothing or a summer leftover. For most of the outfits below I want the hem somewhere between mid-thigh and just above the knee. Any shorter and the jackets and boots start to look mismatched. Much past the knee, and the shorts can read as trousers that shrank.
If you're petite
A hem an inch or two above the knee keeps your leg line long. Bermuda cuts that hit below the knee tend to cut a short leg in half, especially with ankle boots. A higher rise helps too, since it starts the leg at the waist rather than the hip.
If you're tall
You can carry the longer Bermuda lengths and the very baggy cuts that swamp a smaller frame. Off-the-rack jorts often run short on a long leg, so read the inseam measurement instead of trusting the size label.
If you're curvy through the hip and thigh
Look for a straight leg with enough room that the hem doesn't ride up and crease when you walk. A slightly wider leg opening balances a fuller hip. Rolled cuffs add width right at the thigh, so a clean or lightly frayed hem is usually kinder.
Whatever your height, sit down in a pair before you buy it. Denim shorts creep up when you sit, and a length that looks right in the mirror can become much shorter on a cafe chair.
1. Blazer And Knee-Length Jorts Outfit

Knee-length jorts with a relaxed blazer is the combination I reach for first when someone tells me shorts can't look grown up. Go for a medium wash with a straight or slightly loose leg, a fitted white tee or ribbed tank underneath, then an oversized blazer in charcoal or chocolate brown. The thing I check is where the blazer hem lands against the shorts: if it ends at the same point as the denim, the whole body reads as one block. On a petite frame I'd stop the blazer at the hip, while a taller person can carry a longer, boxier cut. Loafers with visible crew socks, a structured shoulder bag, a plain belt and small gold earrings finish it.
2. Cardigan And Dark Wash Jorts Outfit

I like a fine-knit cardigan worn buttoned as a top over dark-wash jorts, because a thin gauge sits flat at the waistband where a chunky knit would bunch. Burgundy and forest green look most autumnal next to indigo. Keep the jorts straight and ending just above the knee, then add black loafers, white ribbed socks, a compact leather shoulder bag and a slim belt through the loops so the denim looks finished. When it warms up after lunch, switch to a simple tank and drape the cardigan over your shoulders. If your torso is long, a cropped cardigan balances it; if it's short, let the cardigan fall over the waistband instead.
3. Leather Jacket And Black Jorts Outfit

Black from the jacket down to the boots is the easiest way to make shorts look like they belong in October. Start with long, relaxed black denim shorts and a fitted gray or white crew-neck tee, then a leather jacket: cropped if you want the waist to show, hip length if you'd rather not. Black ankle boots keep the color line unbroken, and sheer black tights take over once the evenings cool. Real leather is stiff for the first few weeks and softens at the elbows and shoulders with wear, so a new jacket will look boxier here than it will a month later. A silver-buckle belt, hoops and a small crossbody are plenty. If all black feels too hard on you, swap to deep brown leather with cream socks above the boots.
4. Trench Coat And Bermuda Jorts Outfit

This is the outfit where proportion does all the work. The tan trench should fall well below the hem of the Bermuda shorts, so you see a long outer line framing a short inner one; a trench that stops level with the shorts just looks like a coat with nothing under it. Underneath, a black bodysuit or a tucked lightweight knit keeps the waist clean over light or medium denim. I'd wear sleek loafers or low ankle boots for a full day on foot, with a leather tote, a narrow belt and simple sunglasses. Leave the trench open in mild weather and add black or espresso tights on cooler days. Tightly woven cotton gabardine sheds a light shower, which makes this my pick for a changeable day.
5. Oversized Sweater And Baggy Jorts Outfit

Baggy jorts and an oversized sweater only work if something tells the eye where your body is. My fix is a small front tuck that shows the waistband, plus pushing the sleeves up to the forearm. Cream, heather gray, olive and rust all sit well against mid-blue denim. Chunky sneakers keep it streetwear, and loafers make the same pairing a notch smarter; either way, add crew socks, a roomy shoulder bag and plain studs. A white tee underneath with its hem peeking out gives a stripe of contrast and a little extra warmth. One honest warning: loosely knit sweaters pill where a bag strap rubs, so switch shoulders through the day.
6. Button-Down Shirt And Loafer Jorts Outfit

Plaid flannel worn open over a black tank is about as relaxed as fall dressing gets, and with jorts I want the shirt to stop around the hips. A flannel long enough to cover the shorts makes it look like you forgot your pants. Pick relaxed blue or charcoal denim, a brown or olive plaid and lace-up boots, which add the weight at the bottom that a long open shirt needs. Ribbed crew socks, a canvas shoulder bag and plain silver jewelry are all it takes. When it turns properly cold, a fitted thermal under the flannel does more than a thicker shirt, because it holds warm air against the skin without adding bulk at the shoulders.
7. Plaid Flannel And Boot Jorts Outfit

Double denim gets its bad reputation mostly from washes that almost match but don't. I either match on purpose, dark indigo shirt with dark indigo jorts, or go clearly apart, like a pale chambray over a deep wash. Tuck the shirt and use a brown leather belt as the break at the waist. Brown ankle boots or loafers bring warmth into all that blue, and a structured brown bag with simple gold jewelry repeats it. If a fully buttoned denim shirt feels heavy, wear it open over a cream tank. The belt matters more here than anywhere else on this list; without it the two pieces blur into something that looks like a jumpsuit.
8. Denim Shirt And Matching Jorts Outfit

A cropped bomber is the most useful jacket to put with knee-length shorts, because its ribbed band stops at the waist and shows the full length of denim below it. Wear light-wash jorts with a fitted white tank, a baby tee or a long-sleeve crew. Olive and navy bombers look most seasonal against pale denim. Retro sneakers, ribbed socks and a compact crossbody keep the silhouette from getting bulky. Choose minimal padding for warm fall days and swap the tee for a thin turtleneck as the weeks get colder. Roomy jorts are actually easier here than slim ones, since the fitted top and the jacket band supply the shape.
9. Bomber Jacket And Light Wash Jorts Outfit

Shorts with knee-high boots divide people, and I understand why: get the gap wrong and it looks like a costume. What I look for is a small band of leg, a few inches at most, between the hem and the top of the boot. Straight or slightly wide jorts that end just above the boot, a fitted turtleneck in black or chocolate, and sleek leather boots rather than slouchy ones, since a structured shaft holds that line. Keep the palette to two or three shades. A longline blazer handles cold mornings, and sheer tights give more coverage. Knee-high boots fit calves very differently from brand to brand, so try them on with the actual shorts before you commit.
10. Turtleneck And Knee-High Boot Jorts Outfit

Cargo pockets carry volume at the hips, so I keep everything above them close to the body, usually a fitted ribbed top in cream or black. Look for denim cargos with flat, streamlined pockets rather than bellows pockets that stand out from the leg. An olive utility jacket with the sleeves pushed up, neutral sneakers or lug-sole boots and a hands-free crossbody bag suit the practical mood, with just one or two plain metal jewelry pieces. If you're pear-shaped, this isn't the jort I'd start with; a straight Bermuda is kinder to the hip. For a softer version, choose a cropped utility jacket and warm beige accessories.
11. Utility Jacket And Cargo Jorts Outfit

For errands, a crew-neck sweatshirt over roomy medium-wash jorts with clean sneakers is hard to beat. The length of the sweatshirt makes or breaks it: one that ends at the waistband, or a light front tuck, stops the whole thing looking like loungewear. Gray, navy and burgundy fleece all sit naturally with mid-blue denim. Add retro sneakers, crew socks and a structured cap, plus a canvas tote or nylon shoulder bag. I like to match one accessory, usually the cap or the socks, to the sweatshirt color. On warm afternoons, tie the sweatshirt over your shoulders and go down to a fitted white tee.
12. Sweatshirt And Sneaker Jorts Outfit

A sweater vest over a white button-down is old preppy layering, and with dark straight Bermuda jorts it looks collegiate rather than borrowed from a uniform. Let the collar and cuffs show around the vest; that flash of white is the point. Cream, camel or a pattern all suit the vest, and loafers with crew socks, a structured satchel and small hoops keep it neat. Volume is the risk. An oversized shirt under a vest can balloon around the middle, so either pick a shorter vest or tuck the shirt fully before you add it. A fitted long-sleeve shirt in place of the oversized one gives a much cleaner line.
13. Knit Vest And White Shirt Jorts Outfit

Barn jackets are cut roomy so they layer over knits, which suits cuffed jorts with a cream waffle-knit or a striped long-sleeve tee. Roll mid-blue shorts into a neat, narrow cuff; a wide, sloppy roll adds bulk right at the thigh. Tan, olive or chocolate canvas with a corduroy collar gives the heritage feel, and brown loafers, clogs or lace-up boots keep the palette outdoorsy alongside thick socks, a woven leather belt and a canvas tote. I'd pick a jacket that stops at the top of the thigh, since one that hides the shorts entirely tips the look into raincoat territory. Waxed versions shrug off drizzle, though they need rewaxing now and then to stay that way.
14. Barn Jacket And Cuffed Jorts Outfit

Deep indigo next to brown suede is one of my favorite color pairings for fall. Keep the top smooth, a fitted cream knit or simple bodysuit, because suede and dark denim are both heavy-looking textures and a third one crowds them. Then a cropped suede jacket in camel or tobacco, brown knee-high boots for a stronger statement or ankle boots for a quieter one, a bag in a similar brown and minimal gold jewelry. Sheer brown tights add coverage. Suede darkens and can mark when it gets wet, so check the forecast before you wear this, and if you do get caught, let it dry naturally and brush the nap back up.
15. Suede Jacket And Indigo Jorts Outfit

Black jorts can go deeper into fall than most shorts if a long coat does the warming. Tuck a fitted charcoal or black long-sleeve top into knee-length, high-rise black denim, then put a camel, gray or black coat on open over the top. The coat needs to fall below the knee; that contrast between long coat and short hem is what makes the outfit look deliberate. Opaque tights and streamlined ankle boots go on when it's cool, plus a structured handbag and a simple scarf. I'd save this for dry days. A wool coat over tights in a downpour is miserable, and wet wool takes a long time to dry out.
16. Long Coat And Black Jorts Outfit

Rugby shirts are made from heavy cotton jersey with a sturdy woven collar, which gives relaxed jorts something structured to play against. Pair long blue denim shorts with a roomy leg and a striped rugby top in navy, green or burgundy. If it ends near the hip, wear it loose; an oversized one needs a slight front tuck. Leather sneakers or casual loafers with ribbed socks, a simple crossbody and understated hoops keep it easy. The stripes are the only pattern I'd allow here. If you need another layer, a lightweight trench or a plain chore jacket stays out of their way.
17. Rugby Shirt And Relaxed Jorts Outfit

With distressed jorts, I'm fussy about the damage. Controlled fraying at the hem looks intentional, while big holes near the seat look worn out next to a sharp jacket. Pair them with a fitted black tee or ribbed long-sleeve, a cropped black or brown moto jacket with clean hardware, and lug-sole ankle boots to anchor everything. Add a compact shoulder bag, silver jewelry and an understated belt. Sheer tights keep you warmer without hiding the frayed details. Hold the palette to black, charcoal, faded blue and dark brown; the jacket, boots and raw hems already supply the edge.
18. Moto Jacket And Distressed Jorts Outfit

A hoodie with jorts can slide into pajama territory fast. What saves it is structure: a heavyweight hoodie that keeps its shape, slightly cropped or lightly tucked at the front, over baggy medium-wash shorts in gray, navy or forest green. Tall ribbed socks with retro sneakers are the detail that makes it look styled, so make sure the socks show clearly below the hem. Tie a light jacket at the waist in case the weather turns, and add a nylon crossbody, small earrings and a cap. Keep the sneakers clean, too. Scuffed shoes with a hoodie read as sleepwear faster than anything else.
19. Hoodie And Tall Sock Jorts Outfit

Charcoal jorts are a good way out of blue denim altogether. I build this one tonally: a lighter gray fitted sweater or long-sleeve top, then a dark gray blazer or wool-look jacket over it, so you get three related shades from light to dark. Within one color family, texture keeps it interesting, so mix denim, knit, leather and smooth tailoring on purpose. Black loafers, gray socks, a structured black shoulder bag and silver jewelry suit the cool palette, and a white tee at the neckline adds a crisp edge. Black and gray denim fade noticeably in the wash, so turn the shorts inside out and use cold water to keep the charcoal deep.
20. Monochrome Gray Jorts Outfit

A monochrome gray outfit offers a modern alternative to traditional blue denim. Begin with charcoal jorts and add a lighter gray fitted sweater, long-sleeve top, or soft cardigan. Layer a dark gray blazer or wool-look jacket over the base to create depth through several related shades. Finish with black loafers, gray socks, and a structured black shoulder bag. Silver jewelry fits naturally into the cool palette and adds a subtle reflective detail. Mixing textures is important when working with one color family, so combine denim with knitwear, leather, and smooth tailoring. You can also introduce a white T-shirt at the neckline for contrast. The result is minimal, balanced, and appropriate for casual city dressing throughout early fall.
Bare Legs to Opaque Tights as the Weeks Get Colder
Jorts in fall really come down to what's on your legs. Everyone runs at a different temperature, so treat this as a rough sequence rather than a rule.
- Bare legs with socks and loafers or sneakers while the afternoons are still warm and sunny.
- Sheer tights, around 15 to 30 denier, once mornings feel cold on the shins. They take the edge off without looking wintry.
- Opaque tights, 60 denier and up, when you'd want your coat buttoned. This is where black jorts, boots and a long coat come into their own.
- Tall socks pulled over sheer tights with sneakers, for a sporty version that still keeps you warm.
My one firm rule: match the tights to the shoe, not to the shorts. Black tights into black boots make one continuous line from hem to floor, which is what makes shorts look intentional in cold weather. Black tights with tan loafers break the leg at the ankle and make it look shorter.
Cutting Your Own Pair From Old Jeans
Some of the best jorts I've seen started as jeans that had gone at the knee. Rigid, all-cotton denim is the one to cut. Stretch denim with elastane frays less neatly and can curl up at the hem after washing.
- Put the jeans on and mark the length you want with chalk, then add about an inch, because fraying and the first wash both take some length away.
- Take them off, lay them flat and cut straight across one leg. Fold the jeans in half and use the cut leg as a guide for the second so they match.
- Wash and tumble dry to start the fray, then trim any long loose threads.
- If you want the fraying to stop at a set point, run a line of straight stitching just above the hem.
Cut conservatively. You can always take a little more off, but a pair that ends up too short is finished as a fall piece.
How Far Into Fall I'd Push a Pair of Jorts
Denim shorts move into cooler weather when the pieces around them do the seasonal work: a structured jacket or long coat, a fitted base layer, a closed shoe and a hem length you're comfortable in. Loafers read polished, sneakers read casual and boots look the most autumnal. I'd start with a jacket you already own, a blazer, trench or bomber, and build one outfit around it before buying anything new. Once the mornings drop below what bare legs can stand, tights buy you a few more weeks, and after that the jorts can wait for spring.
