Shorts don't have to go into storage in September. I keep wearing them well into fall, and what changes is everything around them: heavier fabrics, a real jacket, closed shoes and often a pair of tights. A pair of denim cutoffs worn with a trench and loafers looks nothing like the same shorts with flip-flops. The fabric of the shorts matters too, since denim, leather, corduroy, wool and suiting all read as autumn in a way thin linen doesn't. Below are twenty outfits for weekends, campus, the office and dinner out, each with the shoes and the layer that make it work. Adjust any of them for your climate and how cold you run.

Tights Under Shorts Without Looking Like a Costume
Tights are what stretch fall shorts into the colder weeks, and the weight of the tights changes the whole look. The number on the package is the denier, which measures the thickness of the yarn. Lower numbers are sheer, higher numbers are opaque.
- Around 15 to 20 denier: sheer, with a light tint to the leg. Good with tailored and leather shorts in early fall when you just want a finished look.
- Around 40 denier: semi-opaque. The most useful weight with denim, corduroy and plaid shorts.
- 60 denier and up: fully opaque and noticeably warmer. My choice with wool shorts and knee-high boots once it's properly cold.
Match the tights to your boots rather than your shorts, so the leg reads as one long line. Black with black boots is the safest; brown tights with brown boots look softer. I'd avoid tan or nude tights with dark shorts and boots, because they break the line in the middle of the leg and read dated.
1. Denim Shorts With Trench Coat Fall Outfit

If I had to pick one way to keep denim shorts going into fall, it would be a trench. Relaxed, mid-rise shorts, a fitted white tee or light ribbed sweater, and a camel or stone trench that falls near the knee. The coat being longer than the shorts is what makes it work; it reads as a coat with legs rather than a summer outfit with a jacket. Black loafers with crew socks add coverage without weight. If the shorts are distressed, keep everything else clean. On a cool morning, semi-sheer tights go underneath. A crossbody and sunglasses, and you're set for errands or a day of sightseeing.
2. Bermuda Shorts With Cardigan Fall Outfit

Bermuda shorts are the easiest way into fall shorts if you'd rather not show much leg. A tailored pair ending around the knee, in charcoal or chocolate, with a soft cardigan in cream or navy, either buttoned as a top or over a fitted tank. The shorts shouldn't cling; if they pull across the thigh when you sit, they'll ride up all day. A defined waistband and front pleats give room through the hip. Sleek loafers, ankle socks for a preppy touch, a structured shoulder bag and small hoops. On a mild afternoon this goes to a casual office or a museum.
3. Leather Shorts With Oversized Sweater Fall Outfit

Faux leather and a soft sweater make a strong contrast, and contrast is what makes shorts look seasonal. Black or deep brown faux-leather shorts with a roomy oatmeal or burgundy sweater, partly tucked at the front to show the waist. Knee-high boots with a low block heel, plus opaque black tights if you want coverage. I'd steer away from skin-tight leather shorts; faux leather doesn't stretch much or breathe, so a relaxed leg is far more comfortable when you sit. The loose knit over the structured bottom suits a lot of body shapes. Good for dinner with friends.
4. Plaid Shorts With Turtleneck Fall Outfit

Plaid shorts already bring the fall color, so the top should be plain. A fitted black or cream turtleneck keeps the print in check. Knee-high riding boots add coverage, and sheer or opaque tights handle the colder days. High-waisted shorts with soft pleats give room through the hips and a defined waist. One pattern per outfit is my rule here; a plaid scarf on top of plaid shorts gets busy fast. Finish with a structured satchel and a long wool coat when it's needed. It's a market-day outfit that would also pass at a casual workplace.
5. Black Shorts With Blazer Fall Outfit

Black tailored shorts with a matching blazer give you a suit that's easier to wear than a pantsuit. A white button-down underneath is crisp; a fitted knit is softer. Check the length by sitting down in the fitting room. Shorts that look fine standing can feel very short in a chair, and that's the moment that matters at work. Loafers, pointed flats or low ankle boots. Push the blazer sleeves up on warm afternoons and add sheer tights when it cools. On a petite frame, a shorter blazer keeps the proportions right; a longer one gives more coverage. Creative offices and gallery openings are where this lands best.
6. Corduroy Shorts With Knit Sweater Fall Outfit

Corduroy shorts are warmer than they look, since the ribbed pile traps a bit of air. High-rise rust or olive cord with a cream cable-knit sweater that ends at the waistband, or with a small front tuck. Brown ankle boots, ribbed socks showing just above the boot and a leather crossbody. Wide-wale cord looks casual; fine-wale is smoother and more polished. If you want to stretch it into colder weeks, fleece-lined tights go underneath. One care note: corduroy flattens if you iron the face, so I steam it or iron it inside out.
7. Denim Shorts With Blazer Fall Outfit

An oversized blazer sharpens denim shorts more than almost anything else. Longer denim shorts or clean cutoffs in a medium or dark wash, a fitted tee or tank, and a charcoal or brown blazer that reaches close to the shorts' hem or just past it. That length is the key; a cropped blazer with short shorts looks like two separate outfits. Loafers and ankle socks give it a preppy feel, ankle boots add warmth. Keep the distressing minimal for a more polished result. A roomy tote and narrow belt, and it works for shopping or a casual meeting in town.
8. Tailored Shorts With Knee-High Boots Fall Outfit

Tailored shorts and knee-high boots make a clean, long silhouette once the weather turns. Structured shorts with a mid-thigh or longer hem, a fitted mock-neck sweater in black or camel, and boots ending just below the knee so a little leg shows between hem and boot. Sheer tights make it one continuous line if you prefer that. Boots with wide shafts gape and break the line, so I look for ones that fit close to the calf. A long coat, compact bag and simple belt. Taller women can go longer in the shorts; shorter women often look better with a slight heel.
9. Athletic Shorts With Windbreaker Fall Outfit

Track shorts can leave the gym if every piece looks chosen. Relaxed shorts with a modest inseam, a lightweight windbreaker in a color that goes with them, and a fitted tee or long-sleeve performance top underneath. Retro sneakers and ribbed crew socks. A tight running short reads like workout gear; a slightly loose one reads like an outfit. Windbreakers block the wind well but trap heat when you walk fast, so pick one with an adjustable waist and some venting. A nylon crossbody and a cap. Travel days and neighborhood walks are made for it.
10. White Shorts With Chunky Sweater Fall Outfit

White shorts keep going after Labor Day as long as the fabric is substantial. Off-white denim or tailored shorts, not thin cotton that shows pockets through it. A chunky sweater in taupe or heather gray, partly tucked so the shorts don't vanish under the knit. Tan ankle boots, a cognac bag and a brown belt warm up the light base. White shows every speck of mud, so I'd keep this one for dry days. A neutral wool coat over everything handles a cold morning that warms up by afternoon, which is exactly the early-fall weather it suits.
11. Cargo Shorts With Long-Sleeve Top Fall Outfit

Cargo shorts look practical rather than sloppy when the top is fitted. Knee-length olive or khaki cargos with a slim long-sleeve top in black or cream, and a cropped utility jacket if you need a layer. Lug-sole loafers or lace-up ankle boots. Don't fill the pockets; anything heavier than a phone pulls the shorts down and adds bulk at the hip. A structured crossbody stops the whole thing looking too rugged, and a plain leather belt keeps the waist in place. I like it for travel and sightseeing days.
12. Sweater Vest With Shorts Fall Outfit

A sweater vest over a button-down adds warmth to your core without the bulk of a full sweater. Cream or argyle over a crisp shirt, with tailored shorts in a coordinating neutral. Let the collar and cuffs show, but watch the shirt hem; long shirt tails hanging below the vest and over the shorts make three hemlines in a row. Tuck it, or choose a shirt with a short, straight hem. Loafers, crew socks and a structured satchel. A cropped vest meeting the waistband gives more shape. Add tights and it lasts into colder weeks.
13. Matching Blazer And Shorts Fall Outfit

A matching blazer and shorts set takes all the decisions out of getting dressed. Look for wool-blend or brushed twill in chocolate or charcoal; those fabrics feel seasonal and hold a crease. A fitted turtleneck or fine-knit crewneck goes underneath. The blazer can be relaxed, but the shoulder seams should sit right at your shoulder, since that's what makes a set look tailored rather than borrowed. Knee-high boots for warmth, loafers in early fall. One color and one texture top to bottom lengthens the frame. It's polished enough for a conference without the formality of a pantsuit.
14. Bike Shorts With Oversized Jacket Fall Outfit

Bike shorts only work outside the gym if they're thick enough. I test them by bending over in front of a mirror; if they go sheer or shiny over the seat, they stay home. A matte black high-rise pair, an oversized sweatshirt or long white tee, then a roomy leather or bomber jacket on top. The top layer should cover part of the hips. Chunky sneakers and tall crew socks keep it sporty, a sleek tote makes it more grown up. A cap and small hoops. It's a travel day or school drop-off outfit when you want comfort first.
15. Suede Shorts With Button-Down Shirt Fall Outfit

Suede shorts bring a lot of texture, so the rest should be plain. A relaxed pair in camel or tobacco with a white or pale blue button-down, fully tucked for a neat line, or left open at the bottom over a fitted tank. Brown ankle boots and a matching leather belt. Real suede marks easily from rain and from sitting on rough benches; faux suede is lighter and much easier to clean, which is why I usually recommend it for shorts. A long cardigan or tailored coat adds warmth. Keep it for clear days, a festival or lunch out.
16. Boxer Shorts With Oversized Blazer Fall Outfit

Boxer-style shorts can look like pajamas if you're not careful, and the shoes are what fix it. Opaque cotton shorts in white or a subtle stripe with a secure waistband, a fitted crewneck tee tucked in, then an oversized black or navy blazer. Black loafers with white ankle socks make it look on purpose. Check the fabric against the light before you leave the house; thin cotton shorts can be more see-through than you'd expect. A structured tote and slim sunglasses. This is a warm early-fall outfit for city errands, not a cold one.
17. Wool Shorts With Tights Fall Outfit

Wool-blend shorts are what I'd wear once it's genuinely cold. Tailored charcoal or herringbone, opaque tights underneath, a fitted turtleneck and a long wool coat. Ankle boots or knee-high boots depending on how much leg you want covered. Look for lined shorts. Unlined wool clings to tights and creeps up as you walk, and it can itch at the waistband. High-rise cuts suit tucked knitwear and define the waist. A structured handbag and studs. It's polished enough for the office and warm enough for a cold-weather trip.
18. Denim Bermuda Shorts With Moto Boots Fall Outfit

Denim Bermudas and moto boots give long shorts an edge. A straight, relaxed pair ending near the knee, a fitted white tank or scoop-neck tee, and a cropped leather jacket or oversized plaid shirt for warmth. Mid-calf black boots add weight and make the denim feel less summery. Leave a few inches of leg between hem and boot; if the boot shaft meets the shorts, the outfit looks crowded and the legs look short. Dark wash is more polished, faded more casual. A slouchy shoulder bag and silver jewelry. Concerts and city walks are its natural setting.
19. Voluminous Shorts With Fitted Knit Top Fall Outfit

Voluminous shorts give you room through the hips and thighs, which is why many people find them more comfortable than slim pairs. Pleated or balloon shorts in black or warm brown, balanced by a fitted long-sleeve knit tucked into the waistband. Pointed flats or streamlined loafers keep the lower half from looking heavy. A cropped jacket or hip-length cardigan, nothing longer, so the shorts keep their shape. Skip oversized tops unless you belt them; volume on top and bottom hides your proportions completely. A compact handbag and small earrings.
20. Shorts With Long Coat Fall Outfit

A long coat frames shorter hemlines and makes shorts look deliberate on a cold day. Black, denim or tailored shorts with a lightweight sweater, and a knee or calf-length coat in camel or charcoal worn open so the shorts show. Loafers in mild weather, knee-high boots and tights once it's colder. On a petite frame I'd stop the coat at the knee; taller women can carry longer lengths. A structured handbag and a scarf. It's my answer for a commute or travel day when the temperature swings.
Mind the Gap Between Hem and Boot
With shorts, the strip of leg between hem and shoe changes how long your legs look. I check it in a full-length mirror every time I try a new pairing.
- Knee-high boots: leave a hand's width or more of leg (or tights) showing above the boot. If the boot nearly touches the hem, the outfit looks crowded.
- Ankle boots and loafers: pair them with shorter or mid-thigh shorts, since the open leg balances a low shoe.
- Bermudas and long shorts: mid-calf boots or loafers with socks; the leg gap is small, so keep the shoe sleek.
- Chunky sneakers: they suit loose shorts best. With slim tailored shorts, a heavy sneaker can look like the outfit is weighted at the bottom.
The Point Where Shorts Stop Making Sense
Shorts with opaque tights handle a surprising amount of cold, but there's a limit. Wind is usually what ends the season before temperature does, since tights block very little of it, and wet weather is worse still because damp tights stay cold for hours. When I'm reaching for a long coat and a scarf every morning, that's my signal to switch the wool shorts for wool trousers.
Before then, store your summer shorts and keep two or three fall pairs in rotation: a tailored or wool pair, a denim pair and something with texture like corduroy or faux leather. Those cover nearly every outfit above.
Fall Shorts Come Down to Fabric and Shoes
Wearing shorts in autumn isn't about strict rules. It's about balance: a seasonal fabric, a real layer and closed shoes. Denim shorts look polished under a trench, while wool, leather, corduroy and tailored pairs sit naturally with sweaters and coats. Tights add warmth, but you don't need them on a mild early-fall day. Watch your proportions and choose pieces you can sit and walk in. Once you find a formula you like, repeat it with a new color, shoe or outer layer, and one pair of shorts gives you a whole season of outfits.
