Fall is my favorite season to dress for, mostly because layering finally makes sense again. A good date outfit this time of year keeps you warm, lets you sit and walk comfortably, and still looks like you. Coffee might mean straight-leg jeans and loafers; dinner or a show is a chance for a sweater dress, sharp trousers or a midi skirt. The temperature can swing a lot between a sunny afternoon and the walk home, so I plan the layer before I plan anything else. The twenty outfits below run from relaxed daytime pairings to proper evening looks, and each one can be adjusted for your age, shape and taste.

Staying Warm After Dark in a Dress or Skirt
Evening dates are where fall outfits fail, because the afternoon is mild and the walk back to the car is not. Dresses and skirts lose heat at the legs first, so that's where I put the work rather than piling on a bigger coat.
- Tights by weight: sheer tights barely add warmth. Opaque tights of a heavier denier, or fleece-lined ones, make a midi skirt comfortable on a cold night.
- A thin base layer: a fine merino or silky thermal top under a knit dress adds warmth without bulk. Cut it with a low neckline so it doesn't show.
- Tall boots over ankle boots: a knee-high boot keeps the calf covered, which matters more than it sounds once the wind picks up.
- A coat that covers the hem: if the dress hangs below the coat, the gap is where you'll feel the cold. A coat at or past the dress length closes it.
I'd rather add these quiet layers than switch to trousers when you really wanted the dress. Most of them are invisible, and the outfit still looks the way you planned.
1. Sweater Dress Fall Date Outfit

A sweater dress is a full outfit in one piece, which is why I reach for it when there's no time to think. Knee-length or midi in chocolate, burgundy, charcoal or forest green. The knit needs some weight; a thin knit clings and shows every seam underneath, while a heavier one skims. A defined waist, side ruching or a belt adds shape. Knee-high leather boots and a structured shoulder bag, with small hoops and a pendant. For an afternoon, a cropped denim jacket. For dinner or a show, a tailored wool coat.
2. Jeans And Blazer Fall Date Outfit

Jeans and a blazer is my answer for the plan that's somewhere between casual and dressed. Straight-leg or slim wide-leg jeans in a clean dark wash, then a fitted knit, silky cami or square-neck bodysuit in cream, black or a muted autumn shade. A camel, plaid or espresso blazer gives the denim structure. Pointed ankle boots, loafers or low block heels depending on the walking. Blazer length is where I'd spend the fitting time: a slightly cropped cut suits petite frames, and a longer one makes a cleaner line on tall or curvy figures. Finish with a leather belt and plain gold jewelry.
3. Midi Skirt And Sweater Fall Date Outfit

A midi skirt that moves when you walk, with a soft sweater on top, suits almost any fall plan. Satin, pleated or a quiet print for the skirt, and a fitted crewneck or lightly oversized sweater to balance the volume. I usually tuck just the front. A full tuck of a thick knit adds a lump at the hip under a fluid skirt. Knee-high boots cover the leg; sleek ankle boots look lighter. A small crossbody, delicate earrings and a tailored coat if it's cold. One color head to toe makes the line look longer. A rust, olive or floral skirt with a neutral sweater gives gentle contrast instead.
4. Leather Jacket And Black Jeans Fall Date Outfit

Black jeans and a leather jacket need almost no styling, which is the point. Straight, skinny or gently flared black denim with a fitted turtleneck or ribbed knit. A moto jacket reads edgier; a collarless jacket is cleaner. Black ankle boots keep it unified, and burgundy or dark brown boots soften it. Size the jacket with your sweater on. Leather doesn't stretch much across the back, and a jacket that fits over a tee will pull over a knit. Silver jewelry suits the cool black; gold warms it. Good faux leather is a fine alternative, and a crossbody keeps your hands free for bowling or a market.
5. Floral Midi Dress Fall Date Outfit

Summer florals can carry on into fall if the background is dark. I look for a midi with flowers in rust, plum, cream, mustard or deep green on a deep ground. Long sleeves and a defined waist give coverage. Tall suede boots and a cropped denim, suede or leather jacket keep the dress seasonal. A small saddle bag and quiet jewelry let the print lead. When it's cold, add opaque tights and swap the short jacket for a belted wool coat. On a small frame, I'd choose a smaller print, since a large repeat can overwhelm a petite body. Good for lunch, a museum or a festival.
6. Wide-Leg Trousers Fall Date Outfit

Wide-leg trousers feel like loungewear and look like you tried. High-rise in black, camel, chocolate or charcoal, with a ribbed mock neck or fine sweater. A cropped jacket or fitted blazer keeps the proportion in check, because wide trousers plus a long loose top turns into a lot of fabric. Pointed flats, heeled ankle boots or slightly platformed loafers. Whatever you choose, hem the trousers to that shoe; it's the cheapest alteration that makes the biggest difference. A structured bag and sculptural earrings. If you like an easier waist, look for partial elastic or soft pleats.
7. Denim Skirt And Knee-High Boots Fall Date Outfit

A denim midi skirt with knee-high boots is practical and a little unexpected. I look for a straight or A-line skirt with a front slit, which lets you walk normally and shows a slice of boot. A narrow denim midi without a slit is the one that makes people take tiny steps. A fitted turtleneck, long-sleeve knit or button cardigan on top. Dark indigo is dressier, faded blue more casual. Smooth leather boots look clean, suede adds texture. A cropped utility jacket or wool coat for warmth, with a slim belt, hoops and a crossbody. Stretch denim helps if the skirt feels tight.
8. Cardigan And Straight-Leg Jeans Fall Date Outfit

For coffee or a bookstore, this is the outfit I'd send someone out in. A fitted tank or crew tee under a soft cardigan in cherry red, oatmeal, olive or heather gray. Buttoned, it works as a top; open, it's a layer. Medium-wash jeans keep it relaxed, dark wash a little dressier. Loafers, ballet flats or low ankle boots, plus a compact shoulder bag. A pendant fills the neckline. The cardigan length decides the shape: one that ends at the waistband shows your waist, while a longer cut covers more and suits slimmer jeans.
9. Slip Skirt And Leather Jacket Fall Date Outfit

Silky slip skirt, structured leather jacket. The contrast is what makes it modern. A bias-cut midi in champagne, bronze, burgundy, navy or black, with a fitted long-sleeve top or thin turtleneck so nothing bunches at the waist. A cropped leather jacket and pointed ankle boots or slingbacks. Bias-cut satin clings to whatever is beneath it, so if it shows more than you like, choose a lined skirt or wear a light slip under it. Sheer or semi-opaque tights on cool nights. A small shoulder bag and simple earrings. It suits dinner, a gallery or a show where a dress would feel too much.
10. Trench Coat And Loafers Fall Date Outfit

A trench coat is the most useful thing to own for unsettled early fall weather. Wear it over a fine sweater and ankle-length straight jeans or cropped trousers. Beige is the classic, but olive, navy or chocolate look just as smart. Loafers with visible socks for day, heeled loafers for something dressier. Choose a bag that sits comfortably under the coat; a big tote on the shoulder creases the trench over time. Roll the sleeves a little on mild days. An adjustable belt lets you wear it open or cinched. I'd wear this for a walking tour, lunch or a market.
11. Plaid Skirt And Turtleneck Fall Date Outfit

A plaid skirt makes a plain turtleneck feel like autumn. Mini, knee or midi length, depending on coverage and weather, with a fitted black, cream, burgundy or brown turtleneck so the plaid stays in charge. Opaque tights and knee-high boots for warmth. The mistake I see most is a patterned coat on top. Go solid instead, a wool coat or a short suede jacket. A small top-handle bag and studs. Here's my coordinating trick: pull one color from the plaid and repeat it in the top, the boots or the bag. A higher rise defines the waist; an A-line moves easily over the hips.
12. Corduroy Pants And Knit Top Fall Date Outfit

Corduroy is warm and textured without being rugged. High-rise straight, bootcut or wide-leg cords in caramel, deep green, burgundy or chocolate, with a fitted knit in cream or another light neutral. A cropped denim jacket, suede jacket or simple blazer adds shape. Loafers or ankle boots with a stable heel, a leather crossbody, small hoops and a slim belt. Fine-wale cord looks sleeker; wide wale feels more vintage and adds some bulk. Sit down in them before buying. Cords have little stretch, and a long dinner shows it quickly.
13. Jumpsuit And Ankle Boots Fall Date Outfit

A jumpsuit saves you from coordinating anything. For fall, long-sleeve or sleeveless in black, navy, rust, olive or deep plum. A wrap front, belt or elastic waist adds shape. Under a sleeveless one, a fitted turtleneck adds warmth and turns it into a fall piece. Pointed ankle boots and a structured mini bag, with a cropped blazer or tailored coat on top. Hoops, a cuff or a short necklace. The fit check that matters is torso length. Sit, then reach up. If the crotch pulls or the shoulders lift, the size is wrong, and no styling fixes that.
14. Faux Leather Pants Fall Date Outfit

Faux leather pants look grown-up when everything around them is soft. Straight, tapered or relaxed in black, espresso or dark burgundy, with a fine-knit sweater in cream, taupe or pale gray. A long wool coat keeps the line long; a cropped blazer shows the waist. Pointed flats, ankle boots or simple heels, and a medium shoulder bag. Keep jewelry minimal so the textures don't fight. Most faux leather doesn't breathe, so in a warm restaurant a fitted pair gets uncomfortable. A lined, relaxed cut with a flexible waistband is the one I'd buy. Good for dinner or a comedy show.
15. Knit Top And Satin Pants Fall Date Outfit

Satin pants give you the movement of a skirt with more coverage. A wide-leg or relaxed pair in bronze, black, forest green or navy, with a fitted knit that sits flat at the waistband. A cropped cardigan adds warmth and keeps the leg line clear. Pointed flats, low heels or sleek ankle boots, matched to the hem length. A small clutch or shoulder bag. I'd avoid a long sweater here because it hides the waist and fights the drape. A narrow belt adds definition. It's dressy enough for a nice restaurant and comfortable for an evening of sitting and walking.
16. Monochrome Brown Fall Date Outfit

An all-brown outfit is the easiest way I know to look polished in fall. Chocolate trousers or a midi skirt, a mocha turtleneck or fitted sweater, and a camel, tobacco or espresso coat over the top. The shades shouldn't match exactly; slight differences are what give it depth. Brown ankle boots and a structured bag, gold earrings or a watch. Mix materials, too, or a single-shade outfit looks flat. Put knit next to smooth leather, wool or suede. A cream scarf or bag adds contrast if you want it. It carries from an afternoon coffee to a relaxed dinner without a change.
17. Utility Jacket And Black Dress Fall Date Outfit

An olive utility jacket takes a black dress out of evening mode. A ribbed, jersey or knit midi that follows the body without gripping it, with the jacket open for a long vertical line. White or cream sneakers for sightseeing, ankle boots for a dressier plan. A tan crossbody warms up all that black, and small hoops and sunglasses finish it. Many utility jackets have an inner drawstring at the waist, which is worth using if you want shape. A side slit makes walking in a knit midi much easier. Good for lunch, a market or a neighborhood walk.
18. Suede Jacket And Flared Jeans Fall Date Outfit

Flared jeans and a suede jacket have a soft seventies feel that suits most figures. The jeans should be high-rise and dark, smooth through the hip and widening only below the knee. A fitted scoop neck, thin turtleneck or tucked blouse on top, and a cropped suede jacket in camel, rust, chocolate or deep green. Hem flares for heeled ankle boots, so the denim nearly touches the floor; hemmed for flats, they'll drag on the ground once you switch to heels. A saddle bag and a pendant. Choose a gentle bootcut if a full flare feels like too much. Dinner and live music both suit it.
19. Blazer And Mini Skirt Fall Date Outfit

A blazer and mini skirt look polished in fall once the legs are covered. A tailored skirt in tweed, plaid, faux leather or structured wool, with a fitted turtleneck and a slightly oversized solid blazer. Opaque tights and knee-high boots. Matching the tights to the boots makes one long line from waist to toe, which lengthens the leg. The blazer must end below the waistband, or the whole thing looks cropped by mistake. A small structured bag and simple earrings. For more coverage, a skirt just above the knee works the same way.
20. Wool Coat And Dark Jeans Fall Date Outfit

Once the temperature really drops, the coat becomes the outfit. A camel, charcoal, navy or checked wool coat over a fitted sweater and dark straight-leg jeans. Ankle boots with a heel you can walk on and a leather belt that roughly matches them. A structured shoulder bag, a soft scarf and small earrings. When I fit a coat, I button it over the thickest sweater I'll wear and cross my arms. If it pulls at the shoulders or chest, size up. Knee length is warm and still easy to move in, and a belted coat adds waist. Right for an evening walk or an outdoor event.
Hemming Trousers and Jeans for the Shoes You'll Wear
Half the outfits here depend on a hem landing in the right place: wide-leg trousers, satin pants, flares, straight jeans with ankle boots. A tailor can fix all of them, but only if you bring the shoes.
Wide-leg and flared
Hem these with the heel on, so the fabric just skims the floor at the back. If you'll wear them with both flats and heels, choose the heel. A slightly long hem with flats is less obvious than a short one with heels.
Straight jeans with ankle boots
Either tuck the jeans cleanly inside a slim boot or hem them to just meet the top of the boot. The awkward middle is a hem that stacks and catches on the shaft. Cropped trousers look best ending at the narrowest part of the ankle, so a little skin or sock shows above the shoe.
One more check: sit down after the pin-up. Trousers rise when you sit, and a hem that's perfect standing can look short at the dinner table.
A Good Layer, Walkable Shoes and One Personal Touch
Before you open the closet, think about three things: where you're going, what the weather will do, and how far you'll walk. The outfits above cover casual denim, romantic dresses, polished separates and warm layers, so there's something for most tastes. Treat each one as a starting point. Change the colors, lengths, heel heights and accessories until they suit your body and comfort. Above all, pick clothes you can sit and walk in without tugging at them all night. A good layer, comfortable shoes and one personal touch are usually enough.
