Fall is the season when casual dressing gets interesting, because a single day can need three different layers. A morning in the 40s turns into a warm afternoon and a chilly evening, and you still want to look like you made a choice when you walked out the door. The fifteen casual looks below are the kind I put together for errands, classes, casual offices and weekends: relaxed denim, knits, practical jackets, soft skirts and shoes you can walk in. Most of them reuse the same handful of basics, so you can probably build several from what's already in your closet. I've added notes on fit and on swaps for different heights and shapes.

The Small Closet Behind These Fifteen Looks
Read through the list and you'll see the same pieces over and over. That's deliberate. When I help someone build a casual fall wardrobe, I start with the pieces that appear in the most outfits and only buy new things to fill real gaps. These basics show up again and again below:
- Straight-leg jeans: six of these outfits use them, and three more use another cut of denim. If you only have one pair of fall pants, make it these.
- A fitted long sleeve or tee in white, cream or black: the base layer under nearly every jacket and cardigan here.
- One knit cardigan and one pullover sweater: a neutral and one fall color, such as rust or burgundy, cover most combinations.
- A jacket that blocks wind: denim, a barn jacket or a trench. Pick the one that suits your weather. Rainy places need the trench first.
- White sneakers and brown ankle boots: between them they cover every outfit here except the dressiest.
Once those are in place, the more specific pieces like cargo pants, cords, a knit dress or a sweater vest each add three or four new outfits instead of one.
1. Casual Fall Outfit With Wide-Leg Jeans

Wide-leg jeans feel like sweatpants and look like real clothes, which is why they're first. A high-rise pair in medium or dark wash with a fitted ribbed top keeps the roomy leg in proportion. Then add an oatmeal, camel or burgundy cardigan for warmth. I always tell petite clients to tuck the top in fully with this cut, because the waistband becomes your starting point and the leg looks longer from there. A cropped length that shows a bit of ankle helps too. Low sneakers keep it relaxed; loafers polish it up. A crossbody bag, hoops and a slim belt finish it, and a wool jacket with warm socks takes over on colder days.
2. Casual Fall Outfit With Black Leggings

Leggings are the fastest outfit on a busy morning, but only if they're the right leggings. Do a squat in front of a mirror in good light before you wear them out. Thin pairs go sheer at the seat and knees, and that's the most common problem I see with this look. Choose thick, matte black leggings, then an oversized striped sweater or long crewneck sweatshirt in cream, forest green or heather gray. A quilted vest adds core warmth without bulky sleeves. White sneakers, crew socks and a belt bag worn across the body keep it practical. If you want more coverage, pick a top that falls below the hips. Flat ankle boots replace the sneakers when it gets cold.
3. Casual Fall Outfit With a Denim Jacket

On days that change temperature every few hours, a denim jacket is the layer I trust most. It breaks wind on a cold morning and ties around your waist or hangs on a chair when the afternoon warms up. Wear a slightly relaxed one over a fitted white tee or thin turtleneck, with black straight-leg pants for contrast and white leather sneakers. A cognac crossbody and rust scarf bring in fall color. Push the sleeves up so the layer underneath shows. For curvier figures, the jacket's hem matters most: end it at the natural waist or upper hip, never at the widest point. Swap the tee for a fine knit when it cools.
4. Casual Fall Outfit With a Plaid Shirt

A plaid shirt over a plain base is about as autumnal as casual dressing gets. Choose an oversized flannel in brown, rust, navy or olive, wear it open over a fitted tank or long sleeve, and pair it with straight-leg jeans and brown suede ankle boots. Tucking one side into the jeans shows your waist without losing the slouch. If big flannels swallow you, choose a lighter-weight cotton and a shorter hem; heavy brushed flannel adds a lot of bulk at the shoulders and hip. A small leather backpack keeps your hands free. Watch the suede boots at the orchard, though. Wet grass darkens suede fast, so spray them with a protector first.
5. Casual Fall Outfit With a Sweater Vest

A sweater vest gives you a warm middle without the weight of a coat, and it shows off a nice shirt. Layer cream, chocolate or burgundy over a crisp white button-down so the collar and cuffs show. Relaxed straight-leg jeans keep it casual, and chunky loafers with ankle socks in a matching neutral give it a smart finish. The fit I look for: a vest that sits close to the body. A boxy vest over a stiff, full shirt adds bulk at the waist and can feel like a school uniform. Roll the sleeves neatly if the shirt is roomy. Longer vests work over leggings, and cropped ones pair with high-rise denim.
6. Casual Fall Outfit With Cargo Pants

Cargo pants are the practical choice here. Pockets mean no bag, and they're tough enough for a day of walking. Olive, tan or washed black cargos look seasonal with a fitted long sleeve, plus a cropped bomber or utility jacket that keeps the waist visible. Retro sneakers make it comfortable for long days, and a compact shoulder bag keeps it from looking too sporty. Curvy women should choose cargos with flat pockets. Bellowed pockets that stick out add width right at the hip and thigh. High-rise cargos with the top fully tucked give the most defined waist. A cap and small hoops finish it.
7. Casual Fall Outfit With a Midi Skirt

A midi skirt with white sneakers is the outfit for anyone who's tired of jeans but doesn't want to dress up. Pick a satin, knit or soft pleated skirt in chocolate brown, olive, black or a subtle fall print. A relaxed crewneck with a small front tuck gives it shape. If the skirt is full, keep the sweater neat; volume on top and bottom looks heavy. Satin is the fabric I'm most careful with. It shows creases from sitting and clings to tights with static, so a knit or crepe midi is easier for a long day. Add a denim jacket for warmth, and ankle boots with tights as it cools.
8. Casual Fall Outfit With a Barn Jacket

Barn jackets are built for exactly this kind of weather: crisp, dry and a bit windy. Choose olive, tan, navy or deep brown, ideally with a contrasting corduroy collar. Wear it over a striped knit top with relaxed straight-leg jeans and brown loafers or leather sneakers. Most barn jackets are cotton canvas, so they get softer and more lived-in with wear. I'd size it with room for a sweater underneath, but the shoulder seam should still land at your shoulder, not halfway down your arm. Petite women look best in a hip-length cut. A canvas tote and light scarf complete it.
9. Casual Fall Outfit With a Knit Dress

A knit midi dress is a one-piece outfit that still feels cozy. Choose a relaxed ribbed dress in charcoal, camel, burgundy or deep green, belted or left as a simple column. A cropped denim or suede jacket adds structure to the soft knit. Flat knee-high boots add warmth, and sneakers make it more casual. A side slit makes walking in tall boots much easier, because a narrow knit midi can catch on the boot shaft with every step. Ribbed knits also cling to whatever is underneath, so I'd wear smooth thermal shorts or tights. A medium crossbody and minimal jewelry are enough.
10. Casual Fall Outfit With a Trench Coat

A trench coat earns its place the first time it rains. A beige, stone or olive trench over a fine-knit sweater and dark straight-leg jeans is a smart casual outfit for commuting or a city day. Sneakers make it relaxed, and loafers dress it up a notch. A patterned scarf puts color near your face. Leave the coat open to show the layers, or tie the belt loosely behind your back for a cleaner line. On shorter women, I always suggest a trench that ends at the knee. A long one can make you look swamped, especially if it isn't belted. Add a thin thermal under the sweater when it turns cold.
11. Casual Fall Outfit With Corduroy Pants

Corduroy is one of the warmest pant fabrics you can wear before wool trousers come out. Straight or wide-leg cords in rust, chocolate, camel or forest green contrast nicely with a fitted cream turtleneck. A cropped cardigan adds another layer. Suede clogs, loafers or ankle boots suit the soft texture. Because corduroy already has visible ridges, keep prints and accessories simple. Fine-wale cord is the easier choice for most people; wide-wale adds width at the thigh. A high rise with shoes in a similar color lengthens the leg. Cords wear shiny at the knees over time, so wash them inside out.
12. Casual Fall Outfit With a Leather Jacket

A leather jacket over soft basics gives a casual outfit some edge. Start with a black or dark brown moto over a plain white tee or thin gray sweater, and add relaxed blue jeans and clean sneakers. A burgundy bag or patterned scarf brings in a bit of fall color. The jacket should hit somewhere that works with your jeans' rise and zip up without pulling across the chest. If a moto feels too tough, a collarless jacket or relaxed faux-leather bomber is softer. Real leather molds to you over time; faux leather doesn't breathe as well and can feel warm indoors. Simple hoops are all the jewelry it needs.
13. Casual Fall Outfit With a Cardigan

A chilly afternoon that ends inside a warm café calls for something you can take off without thinking. A relaxed cardigan is that piece. Layer a chunky cream, gray or rust cardigan over a fitted tank or crewneck, with dark straight-leg jeans and suede ankle boots. Button it and tuck the front into high-rise jeans for more shape, or wear it open. Chunky knits look great but add a lot of bulk, and they pill at the elbows and under the arms where they rub. If you want less volume, a fine-gauge knit in a longer length gives a smoother line. A small shoulder bag and pendant pull it together.
14. Casual Fall Outfit With a Hoodie and Blazer

A hoodie under a blazer sounds odd until you try it. It's comfortable and looks deliberate in a way regular athleisure doesn't. The hoodie has to be thin: a lightweight gray, cream or navy one that lies flat under a relaxed plaid or solid blazer. A thick fleece hoodie bunches at the shoulders and pushes the blazer out of shape. Size the blazer with a little extra room in the shoulder and long enough to cover the hoodie's hem. Straight-leg jeans in a dark or faded wash and low sneakers finish it. Tailored pull-on pants can replace the jeans. A leather tote and small hoops add some polish.
15. Casual Fall Outfit With a Shacket

A shacket sits between a shirt and a coat, which makes it ideal for mild autumn days. Choose plaid, camel, cream or olive and layer it over a fitted long sleeve with black jeans. Lug-sole ankle boots give you grip on wet leaves and slick sidewalks. Wear it open for long vertical lines, or button the middle for warmth. Petite? Look for a shorter shacket with smaller pockets; big patch pockets on a short frame look like they belong to someone else's coat. Taller women can wear an oversized, mid-thigh version. A crossbody and a knit beanie for colder mornings are all you need.
Why Some Sweaters Pill by November
Knits carry casual fall dressing, so it helps to know what you're buying. Two sweaters that look the same on the shelf can wear very differently after a month, and the fiber is usually the reason.
- Wool and merino: warm, breathable and good at shrugging off odor, so they need washing less often. Fine merino can still pill where a bag strap rubs.
- Cotton: soft and easy to wash, but it holds moisture and isn't very warm when it's damp. Best for mild days and indoor layering.
- Acrylic and other synthetics: cheap and warm, but they tend to pill quickly and trap heat and sweat.
- Blends: a bit of nylon in a wool sweater adds strength. Mostly acrylic with a little wool behaves like acrylic.
Keeping knits looking new
Pilling comes from friction, so it shows up under the arms, at the elbows and where a crossbody strap sits. A fabric shaver or sweater comb removes pills without thinning the knit. Wash sweaters inside out on a gentle, cold cycle or by hand, and dry them flat. Fold knits instead of hanging them. Hangers stretch out the shoulders of heavy sweaters into points that never quite relax again.
Comfortable Clothes Can Still Look Put Together
A good casual fall wardrobe doesn't need much. Jeans, leggings, a couple of sweaters and comfortable shoes do most of the work, and jackets, scarves and bags add personality on top. You don't need every piece shown here or a particular body shape to wear these looks. Adjust proportions and fabrics until each one feels right for you, starting with the shape tweaks noted in each outfit. Pick the two or three looks that fit your actual week and your weather, then add from there. Casual can still look like you thought about it.
