An autumn closet has a harder job than a winter one. It has to cover a cold morning, a warm afternoon and a sudden shower, sometimes all in one day. The pieces this season leaned on were familiar ones made fresh: suede, relaxed tailoring, double denim, burgundy and a softer bohemian streak. What I like about them is that they'll still work after the trend moves on. The fifteen outfits below share a lot of the same pieces, which is the point. Copy them as written or swap colors and proportions to suit your body, your climate and what's already hanging in your wardrobe.

Mapping the Overlap Between These Outfits
When I plan an autumn capsule, I don't start with outfits. I start with the pieces that show up in the most outfits, because those are the ones worth buying well. Looking across all fifteen looks here, a short core list keeps reappearing:
- Outerwear: a trench and one shorter jacket, either suede, a barn jacket or a utility jacket.
- Bottoms: straight-leg blue jeans, one pair of tailored trousers and one midi skirt, satin or wool.
- Knits: a cream sweater, a darker sweater in burgundy or brown, and a cardigan.
- Base layers: a fitted white tee and a thin turtleneck.
- Shoes: brown ankle boots, knee-high boots and loafers or clean sneakers.
That's roughly a dozen pieces, and between them they rebuild most of the looks below. Everything else, the leopard dress, the plaid blazer, the scarf coat, is an addition that gives the core more range. If your budget is limited, spend it on the boots and the coat. They take the most wear, and cheap versions show it fastest.
1. Autumn Trench Coat Outfit With Straight-Leg Jeans

A trench is the first coat I'd put in any autumn capsule, because it handles wind and light rain and fits over almost everything else here. Beige, camel or olive over a light striped sweater and straight blue jeans is the base. Full-length denim looks cleaner; a little ankle is fine while the weather is still mild. Loafers dress it up, white sneakers dress it down, and a narrow belt in the same color as the shoes ties it together. If you're petite, a knee-length trench keeps the proportions right; taller frames carry a longer cut.
2. Autumn Suede Jacket Outfit With Wide-Leg Trousers

A suede jacket gives you warmth and texture without the weight of a coat. Brown, tan or rust over a fitted cream tee or fine knit, with high-waisted wide-leg trousers in black, charcoal or chocolate, balances the shorter jacket against a long leg. Low sneakers or pointed ankle boots depending on the day. Real suede needs a protective spray before you wear it and doesn't like rain, so if you live somewhere wet, a good faux suede is the more sensible buy. Keep everything else plain so the texture shows.
3. Autumn Double Denim Outfit With Ankle Boots

Double denim is easier when the washes look coordinated rather than identical. A medium-wash denim shirt or jean jacket over straight, wide or slightly flared jeans, with a white tank or thin turtleneck in between, gives you separation. Brown ankle boots, a matching belt and a crossbody make it feel finished. Similar blues read longer and leaner; a pale shirt over dark indigo reads more casual. Both denim pieces earn their place in a capsule on their own, which is why I like this one.
4. Autumn Burgundy Sweater Outfit With Satin Midi Skirt

A burgundy sweater over a satin midi is the outfit that takes the capsule from day to dinner. Wine, berry or oxblood all work, and the skirt can be black, champagne or chocolate. Tuck just the front of the sweater so the waist shows without the knit pulling tight. Knee-high boots give warmth and a smooth line; pointed ankle boots work on milder days. Volume matters here: an oversized sweater wants a straighter skirt, and a fuller skirt wants a cropped cardigan instead. Satin wrinkles in a suitcase, so roll it rather than fold it when you travel.
5. Autumn Scarf Coat Outfit With Tailored Pants

A scarf coat solves the cold-neck problem without an extra accessory to carry. Camel, gray, navy or cream over a slim turtleneck and straight tailored pants, with everything in one color family, gives a long clean line. Loafers for work, low-heeled ankle boots for more coverage. Check that the coat closes properly over a sweater, since some scarf coats are cut to hang open. If the scarf is very wide, drape one end over your shoulder instead of wrapping, which piles bulk under your chin.
6. Autumn Barn Jacket Outfit With Midi Skirt

A barn jacket over a skirt is a contrast I use a lot, because it makes a practical jacket feel softer. Olive, tan, navy or brown over a cream cable knit, then a satin, wool-blend or subtle plaid midi. Riding boots keep your legs warm and ground the outfit, and thick socks inside the boots help on cold mornings. The jacket should stop around the hip with room for the sweater. If a full skirt overwhelms you, an A-line shape is calmer. Canvas barn jackets soften with every wash, so a stiff new one will relax.
7. Autumn Leopard Dress Outfit With Cardigan

A leopard midi dress is the one printed piece I'd put in an autumn capsule, because it sits inside the same brown, black and tan palette as everything else. A wrap, shirt or bias-cut shape is the most comfortable. A solid black, camel or chocolate cardigan on top softens it and adds warmth. Ballet flats work early in the season; knee boots later. If the dress and cardigan together feel shapeless, a slim belt over both fixes it. Small-scale leopard is the quieter choice.
8. Autumn Leather Blazer Outfit With Knit Dress

A leather blazer over a knit dress is structure against softness. A cream, charcoal, burgundy or dark green midi knit dress under a black or chocolate leather blazer is the formula. Balance is the rule: a closer-fitting dress under an oversized blazer, or a straight blazer over a looser column dress. Keep the boot color near the blazer's. Knit dresses cling to tights, so a slip or semi-sheer tights in a smooth finish stop the hem from riding up when you walk. Faux leather works if it looks supple rather than plasticky.
9. Autumn Oversized Blazer Outfit With Matching Trousers

Relaxed tailoring is what lets one outfit cover a meeting and a weekend. An oversized blazer with matching or closely coordinated trousers in gray, navy, brown or a small check, over a fitted tee, ribbed tank or fine knit, is the setup. Retro sneakers keep it daytime; loafers or pointed boots make it formal. An oversized blazer should look deliberate, so check that the sleeve still ends near your wrist and the shoulders don't droop halfway down your arm. Straight or softly wide trousers are easier to wear than very wide ones.
10. Autumn Boho Maxi Dress Outfit With Suede Boots

The boho maxis worth wearing in autumn are the ones balanced by something structured. A long-sleeved maxi in a small floral, paisley or earthy solid, belted with brown leather, with suede knee boots underneath. A cropped jacket or fitted cardigan adds warmth without covering the whole dress. One printed piece is enough; keep the bag and necklace simple. If you prefer less volume, look for a softly shaped waist and a narrower skirt. A maxi also packs small, which is why I keep one in a travel capsule.
11. Autumn Cardigan Outfit With Barrel-Leg Jeans

A cropped cardigan with barrel-leg jeans gives a current shape without much risk. Start with a fitted white tee or tank, then a cropped cardigan in red, gray, navy or oatmeal. A gentle curve in the jeans is easier to wear than extreme volume. Mary Janes make it a little preppy; slim sneakers are better for long walks. The cardigan works buttoned as a top or open as a layer, so it pulls double duty. If cropped knits feel short on you, a waist-length cardigan does the same job.
12. Autumn Utility Jacket Outfit With Cream Jeans

Cream jeans don't have to go away in September. Paired with a striped long-sleeve top and an olive utility jacket, they look seasonal, because the darker jacket does the autumn work. Ecru or natural denim is softer than bright white, and a heavier weight is warmer and less see-through. Retro sneakers in beige, burgundy or brown, with a practical crossbody. The jacket should end around the hip to balance the light bottom half. Light denim shows mud, so I'd keep this one for dry days.
13. Autumn Chocolate Brown Monochrome Outfit

Chocolate brown head to toe has the depth of black but looks softer. A fine-knit brown sweater with tailored trousers in a slightly different shade keeps it from looking flat; an exact match tends to look like a uniform. Layer a camel or espresso coat and add suede loafers or pointed ankle boots. A cream scarf near the face lifts it if brown makes you look sallow. The real trick is texture: wool, suede, leather and smooth knit together give one color some life.
14. Autumn Plaid Blazer Outfit With Mini Skirt

A plaid blazer with a mini skirt brings in a bit of academia without a full preppy wardrobe. Pair a brown, gray or navy plaid blazer with a fitted turtleneck and a solid A-line mini, then opaque tights. Loafers, low block heels or knee boots all work. For work, a slightly longer skirt or a knee-length one keeps the same formula. The blazer can be a little oversized, but the shoulders should still sit neatly. A quiet plaid mixes with more of your closet; a bold one becomes the focus.
15. Autumn Quilted Jacket Outfit With Leggings

Some days call for comfort first. A lightweight quilted jacket over a hoodie or long-sleeve tee with thick, matte black leggings is that outfit, finished with leather sneakers or supportive trainers and crew socks. Olive, navy, burgundy or chocolate jackets keep it seasonal. Matte leggings look more deliberate than shiny ones, and thick ones don't go see-through when you bend. A hip-length jacket gives more coverage; a shorter quilted style suits petite frames. Quilted jackets pack flat, so they're handy for travel.
Rotating the Closet as the Season Cools
Autumn isn't one temperature, so I treat the season as three stages and move pieces forward rather than switching everything at once.
Early autumn
Tees, light cardigans, cream jeans, loafers and ballet flats still work. This is when the trench, suede jacket and utility jacket get the most wear, worn open over thin layers.
Mid autumn
Sweaters replace tees, knit dresses and midi skirts come in, and ankle boots take over from flats. Bring tights out of storage now, and check last year's pairs for runs before you need them.
Late autumn
Knee-high boots, opaque tights, the scarf coat and leather gloves. Light denim and satin get fewer outings because of rain and cold.
As the summer pieces leave, wash them before storing. Body oils and deodorant left in fabric turn into yellow stains over a few months. Fold knits rather than hanging them so the shoulders don't stretch, and store everything somewhere dry with a little air around it.
A Trench, Good Jeans and Two Pairs of Boots
You don't need every piece above to get a working autumn wardrobe. A trench, good straight jeans, a couple of soft knits, ankle and knee boots, and one or two textured layers like suede or leather will cover most of these outfits. Start with the formulas that match your life, rebuild them from what you own, then fill gaps one at a time. Burgundy, chocolate, olive, cream and charcoal all mix with each other, so almost anything you add will work with the rest. Adjust for your climate, your proportions and how much coverage you like.
