A small closet only gets boring when the pieces can't talk to each other. The ten garments I've used here all can: a white button-down, a fitted neutral tee, a striped long-sleeve top, an oatmeal sweater, a black blazer, a trench coat, straight-leg jeans, black trousers, a midi skirt and a knit dress. That mix leans on layers, relaxed tailoring and denim you can walk in, with room for one rich accent color. Shoes, bags and jewelry rotate freely and don't count toward the ten. Below are fifteen outfits from that same rail, with notes on what makes each one work and where it can go wrong.

The Fit Test Each Capsule Piece Has to Pass
With only ten garments, every one gets worn often and layered with the others. I run the same checks before anything earns its place.
- The blazer and the trench must both fit over the oatmeal sweater. Try them together, and raise your arms.
- The jeans and trousers should work with both flat shoes and ankle boots. Hem them for the boots, so they don't drag in flats.
- The midi skirt and knit dress should hit the same spot on the leg, ideally just below the widest part of the calf, so one pair of knee-high boots covers both.
- The white shirt should look right tucked and untucked. Too long and it bunches in the skirt; too short and it pops out when you reach up.
- Every top should go with every bottom. Lay them out in pairs; any piece that only matches one other doesn't belong in a ten-piece capsule.
Color is where people usually slip. Pick one base, black or brown, and stick to it for shoes, belts and the blazer. Mixing both halves the number of outfits.
1. White Button-Down and Straight-Leg Jeans Fall Capsule Outfit

If I could only pack one outfit from this capsule, it would be this. The white shirt half-tucked into straight jeans gives a relaxed shape with a visible waist, and the trench handles cool mornings. Pull the front of the shirt into the waistband just off center and leave the back out; a full tuck in jeans tends to balloon when you sit. Brown ankle boots, a structured leather bag and a slim brown belt pick up the trench's warm tone. Roll the sleeves once the afternoon warms up. A burgundy scarf brings in color without adding an eleventh garment.
2. Striped Top and Black Trousers Fall Capsule Outfit

This is my workday formula when I don't want to think: striped top, black trousers, black blazer. The stripes break up two dark pieces that would otherwise read as a uniform. A straight or slightly wide trouser feels current and gives the blazer something to balance against. Black loafers keep the line clean, and sneakers make it casual. When the office runs warm, drape the blazer over your shoulders; a structured blazer holds that position far better than a soft one, which slides off the moment you move.
3. Oatmeal Sweater and Midi Skirt Fall Capsule Outfit

Here the oatmeal sweater meets the midi skirt, and the trick is how much of the sweater goes in. Tuck only the front lightly, leave the back loose, and check the side view in a mirror; a chunky knit tucked all the way round adds bulk right at the hip. A satin or pleated skirt in chocolate, olive or black matches the rest of the capsule. Knee-high boots fill the gap under the hem, so no stretch of bare leg shows on a cold day. Put the trench over everything when it's chilly.
4. Knit Dress and Black Blazer Fall Capsule Outfit

The knit dress is the hardest-working piece in this capsule, and the blazer is a big part of why. A midi with room to move and a simple neckline takes structure well, so the blazer's shoulders sharpen a relaxed knit right away. One fit check before you buy: lift your arms in the blazer while wearing the dress. Knit grips a blazer's lining, and a sleeve that's tight on top of a knit sleeve will ride up all day. Pointed ankle boots, a medium leather bag and subtle jewelry finish it. I'd wear it to an office in the morning and to dinner later.
5. Neutral T-Shirt and Jeans Fall Capsule Outfit

Early fall days swing a lot, and this outfit handles it. A fitted neutral tee, straight-leg jeans and the black blazer; each layer comes off without the proportions falling apart. Match the tee to the capsule's base, white or cream with warm accents, gray with cool ones. Low sneakers for errands, loafers to dress it up. If the forecast drops, knot the oatmeal sweater around your shoulders before you leave. A fitted tee matters here, because a loose one bunches under the blazer and shows lines through the back.
6. White Button-Down and Black Trousers Fall Capsule Outfit

A white shirt and black trousers look sharp almost anywhere, and small choices decide whether they look formal or easy. Tuck the shirt in fully with loafers and a tote for an office. For a softer version, open the top two buttons, roll the sleeves and use a slim belt. The trench goes over both without hiding the clean lines. Cotton poplin shirts wrinkle at the elbow and across the stomach after a few hours of sitting; if you travel with this one, look for a shirt with a little stretch or a twill weave, which recovers better.
7. Striped Top and Midi Skirt Fall Capsule Outfit

Stripes make the midi skirt feel like daytime instead of an evening piece. I use a short front tuck so the waist shows, then pair black-and-cream stripes with a black, olive or camel skirt. Leave the trench open so the contrast between stripe and solid stays visible. Loafers give a traditional finish; ankle boots add coverage on colder days, but keep the gap between boot and hem small or the leg looks cut off. A small crossbody bag and stud earrings are enough. The stripes are the pattern, so I'd keep jewelry quiet.
8. Oatmeal Sweater and Straight-Leg Jeans Fall Capsule Outfit

Cold morning, no time to plan: oatmeal sweater, straight-leg jeans, brown ankle boots. Wear the knit loose or with a small front tuck. Dark or medium denim gives the pale sweater some contrast, while a light wash with oatmeal can look washed out in gray daylight. Put the trench on top when you need it, and pull the sweater cuffs down inside the coat sleeves first so they don't bunch at the elbow. A cognac bag, a leather belt and small gold earrings warm the palette. Add the burgundy scarf when you want more color.
9. Knit Dress and Oatmeal Sweater Fall Capsule Outfit

Put the oatmeal sweater over the knit dress and the dress turns into a skirt, which gives you a whole new outfit for free. The sweater needs to end near the waist; if it's longer, a slim belt under the knit holds the extra length up. Watch for friction between the two knits. Two wools rubbing together pill faster at the waistline, so I keep this pairing for days that don't involve a cross-body strap rubbing at the same spot. Knee-high boots and a structured bag finish it. When the knits are close in color, add contrast with the shoes.
10. White Button-Down and Midi Skirt Fall Capsule Outfit

This is the dressiest of the three-piece outfits here: white shirt tucked into the midi skirt, black blazer worn open for one long line. A neat tuck matters with a skirt, so I wear the shirt fully in and smooth the back so it doesn't bunch above the waistband. Loafers keep it comfortable, pointed ankle boots make it a touch dressier. Pick a bag that ties back to the shoe color. Leave the collar open with a short necklace, or button it higher and wear earrings instead, not both. It suits meetings and daytime events.
11. Striped Top and Jeans Fall Capsule Outfit

A striped top and straight jeans can look unfinished on their own. What fixes it is a trench, black loafers or sleek ankle boots, and a black belt that links the shoes to the rest. A crossbody bag keeps your hands free for travel and errands. On cold days, put the blazer between the stripes and the trench, though check the trench fits over the blazer first. Many trenches are cut for a sweater, not a structured jacket, and the shoulders will pull. Keep jewelry minimal. I'd wear it for sightseeing or a busy Saturday.
12. Neutral T-Shirt and Black Trousers Fall Capsule Outfit

Can a tee and trousers pass for work or travel? Yes, if the fit is right. Tuck the neutral tee into the black trousers and drape the oatmeal sweater over your shoulders, ready to wear properly if it turns chilly. Loafers, a structured tote and a narrow leather belt finish it. A necklace or small hoops brighten the plain neckline. If your workplace expects more, add the blazer and fold the sweater into your bag. This is my default for flights: nothing digs in when you sit for hours, and it still looks presentable when you land.
13. Knit Dress and Trench Coat Fall Capsule Outfit

A knit dress under a trench is a full outfit in about a minute. Keep the coat open so the dress shows and the line stays long. If the dress is loose, a slim belt underneath, not over the trench, gives a hint of waist. Knee-high boots for warmth, ankle boots for a lighter in-between look. Choose a bag in cognac, burgundy or black and match your jewelry to its hardware. On windy days the trench flaps open, so tie the belt loosely behind your back to keep it from swinging. That small trick also keeps the shape neat.
14. Oatmeal Sweater and Black Trousers Fall Capsule Outfit

Oatmeal against black looks soft and tailored at once, a contrast I like for days when denim feels too casual. Choose a relaxed sweater and tuck a small section into the trousers to balance the proportions. Add the blazer for a professional third layer, or the trench outdoors. One caution: a fluffy knit sheds light fibers onto black trousers, so I'd pick a smoother, tightly knitted sweater and keep a lint roller in your bag. Loafers are best for walking; heeled ankle boots look more polished. A burgundy bag or scarf adds a touch of fall color.
15. White Button-Down and Sweater Layered Fall Capsule Outfit

Wearing the oatmeal sweater over the white shirt is the classic cold-weather layer, and it's all in the edges: let the collar, cuffs and a sliver of hem show. Straight jeans with brown ankle boots make it a weekend look; black trousers with loafers make it work-ready. The trench goes over both only if the sweater isn't bulky. Choose a fine or midweight knit for this combination. Since each piece works on its own, you can take one off by lunchtime and still look dressed. Finish with a structured bag, a leather belt and small gold earrings.
How the Whole Capsule Fits in a Carry-On
A ten-piece capsule is the easiest trip packing there is, because nothing needs a backup. I treat travel day as part of the packing.
Wear the Bulky Three
Put the trench, the jeans and the ankle boots on your body for the journey. They take up the most space and weigh the most, and they make a perfectly good plane outfit with the tee.
Roll the Knits, Fold the Tailoring
Roll the sweater, tee, striped top and knit dress; knits don't crease much and rolling saves room. Fold the shirt, trousers and blazer flat. Turn the blazer inside out, fold it in half lengthwise and lay it on top so the shoulders keep their shape.
Shoes and Small Things
Pack one more pair of shoes at most, usually loafers. Tuck socks and the scarf inside them. Once you arrive, a small travel steamer, or hanging the shirt and skirt in a steamy bathroom while you shower, takes most of the creases out.
Ten Garments, Fifteen Outfits, and Room to Swap
Ten pieces covered fifteen outfits here, from office days to flights to Saturdays, and I could have kept going. The formulas matter more than the exact garments. If a midi skirt never suits your life, swap it for wide trousers and most combinations still hold. Build around your own climate, routine and colors, and look through your closet before buying anything; you probably own six or seven of these already. Fill the gaps with the pieces that join the most outfits, and stop there.
